June Beastie – Baking the Most of It!

Hey there Beastie friends! And what’s this – could it be the first new Beastie of the new decade? I think so! Hey there, June Beastie!
June Beastie, a special commission by CrawCrafts BeastiesThat said, the most attentive BeastieBlog readers will surely remember her chance arrival on Paddy and Plunkett’s doorstep last year… And her subsequent departure to foreign parts in a convenient backpack!

But her visit was so fleeting that we didn’t really get a chance to check out all her cool stuff! So, let’s set 2020 off to a good start and get to know June Beastie a little better. She certainly loves to smile for the camera!

She also loves to cook, so I was sure to make her a neatly-embroidered felt apron to cover her hand-sewn lilac t-shirt.

Then, how about we add a little sparkle? Hello, matching gold glasses and earrings! Very stylish.

And finally… The item that has been raising the most questions – not least from Paddy and Plunkett! It’s a… Rolling pin?!
June Beastie's Essential Rolling Pin - CrawCrafts BeastiesWell, the way I see it, you never know when you might be faced with a baking emergency. And I’d hate to send any Beastie out into the world without their favourite piece of kit. But if you can think of any other eventualities where a rolling pin might be useful, or if you’ve ever found yourself in a situation where you thought “I really wish I’d had a rolling pin with me”, be sure to share them in the comments!

We’ll be back next week with the first of Explorer Beastie’s postcards from London… See you then!

Virtual Reality Beastie - Commissions by CrawCrafts Beasties

Beasties in Virtual Reality!

Hello Beastie friends! And in case the post title had you wondering – no, I haven’t drastically changed direction and started working in near-future tech. The Beastie virtual reality experience is probably at least a couple of years away. Virtual reality FOR Beasties though – that I can do!

Virtual Reality, Beastie-style - CrawCrafts Beasties
This woolly monster dude was created as a very special gift for a guy who’s also super into his tech. The VR headset and headphones are modelled on his human-size equivalents… But they’ve been cunningly Beastified using 100% wool felt and a little bit of embroidery!

Beastie Virtual Reality Headset and Headphones - CrawCrafts Beasties
And the tech doesn’t stop there, either! He’s also got a special Beastie-sized controller for a drone…
Beastie Drone Controller - Virtual Reality Beastie - CrawCrafts Beasties… Which is apparently hovering above us somewhere!

Special magnetic paws, of course!
Magic Magnetic Paws - CrawCrafts BeastiesNow he can grab all sorts of cool stuff.
Beastie Dumbbell - Virtual Reality BeastieA Beastie has to stay fit, after all! And since this little guy’s human counterpart works in a gym, he’ll fit right in there too. Especially in his cool shorts and muscle vest outfit…
Virtual Reality Dude Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesWait a sec, who’s that I hear?
Beastie Pekingese - CrawCrafts BeastiesIt’s our Beastie’s trusty pup – a Beastie-sized Pekingese! (Or should that be Beastie-ngese?)

Anyway, it looks like this sweet little felted fuzzball is certainly happy to see his owner!

And now, just one more accessory to complete the look. This Beastie is off to live in Greece, so he’ll definitely need…

That’s better. Time to kick back and relax…
Relaxing in Sunglasses - CrawCrafts Beasties… Because this modelling malarkey is tougher than it looks!

Thanks to Trish for commissioning this awesome, accessory-laden Beastie! I hope he’s enjoying his new life in the sunny Med. I really need to start delivering these Beasties by hand, and get to some of the exotic places where they end up!

We’ll be back next week, when Paddy and Plunkett will be helping out an unexpected visitor. See you then!

Detective Beastie, A Commission by CrawCrafts Beasties

The Curious Case of Detective Beastie

Hey there everyone! We’re broadcasting a little later than usual today, but hopefully I can make it up to you all by introducing a super new Beastie – with a heap of cool accessories! Soooo… Hello there, Detective Beastie!
Detective Beastie by CrawCrafts BeastiesAdmittedly, she doesn’t look very detective-y just yet. Let’s get ready for work!

“Hey, where are my glasses?”
Detective Beastie's Glasses - Commissions - CrawCrafts BeastiesAha! That’s better. This might also be a good time to admire her lustrous red locks and sweet star print tunic!
Lovely Red Beastie Hair - CrawCrafts BeastiesI always knew this Beastie would be going to live in Texas, so this sweet fabric was the perfect nod to her new home in the Lone Star State.

What’s next, then? Oh yes, COFFEE.
Detective Beastie's Coffee - Commissions - CrawCrafts BeastiesA nice frothy felty cappucino is the best way to start the day. Yum!

Now, like most Beasties, Detective Beastie wants to have everything that her human counterpart has. So when she heard that her new buddy usually wears a pink cotton jacket to work… Well, you can probably see where this is going.

What do you have in there, by the way?

And that just leaves one more important thing to add before we send her on her way.

Personalised Birthday Gift Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties

A Special Beastie for a Special Birthday!

Well hello there, Beastie friends! After Paddy’s totally genuine high-speed adventure last week, we’re shifting down a gear to a more sedate pace, and meeting a new Beastie. Hey, Birthday Girl Beastie!
A Special Birthday Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesThis Beastie was requested by a thoughtful mum, who wanted to help her daughter to celebrate a very special birthday in the Beastie-est way possible. I mean, you don’t turn 10 every day, do you?

So, this was the design brief – a Beastie with long, dark brown hair just like her new human buddy’s…
Beastie Hair - Special Birthday Commission - CrawCrafts BeastiesDone! And we needed to include her favourite colours, too – blue, mint green, white and peach.

I managed to tick most of those boxes with this stripey handknitted sweater…

… Complete with an appliquéd felt “O” for the birthday girl’s initial!

Now, how can we get some peach in there? I know… What about a little felt bag, so she can gather up souvenirs (and, more importantly, birthday cake) on her adventures?
Beastie Bag - Special Birthday Commission - CrawCrafts BeastiesPerfect! I even picked up some rose-gold-coloured jewellery findings to better match the warm peachy tones of the bag and its ribbon strap. Here you go, little Beastie lady!

That looks great! Your outfit is complete.
Beastie with Bag - Special Birthday Commission by CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd now I reckon you’d better get going… You wouldn’t want to miss the party, would you?

So, thanks to Dee for requesting this sweet little girl monster! And if you know someone who’s about to celebrate a special birthday too, why not send a personalised Beastie to help with the festivities?

You can check out past Beastifications in my Gallery, or if you’re ready to start now, drop us a line from the Contact page!

We’ll be back next Tuesday with more Beastie shenanigans, so be sure to join us then!

See you next week!

Beastie Bruce's Glasses - Beastie Accessories by CrawCrafts Beasties

A Sporty Beastie… With ALL the Accessories!

Eeeeek! Hello there everyone! Sorry I’m a smidge late to the party this week – I’ve taken on a little extra work recently, and unfortunately my blogging time got squeezed out! But I still have a brand new Beastie to share with you today, so how about we kick back on this lazy Sunday morning, and hang out with him and all his accessories?

(As I mentioned way back last week, he has SO MANY accessories!)

Hey there, Mr Beastie!
Bruce Beastie, A Commission by CrawCrafts Beasties

“Mr Beastie” seems very formal though, doesn’t it? Maybe we should get on first name terms. This Beastie started life as a request from one of my lovely knitting students, who wanted to Beastify her husband Bruce as a birthday gift. So I’m guessing that makes this fellow Beastie Bruce!

Human Bruce is an active kind of guy, and every morning he dons his yellow hi-viz vest before he cycles to work. Great, let’s give Beastie Bruce one of those!Beastie Bruce's Hi Viz Vest - CrawCrafts Beasties
As you can see, the felt hi-viz has a stripe of reflective ribbon… And is removable!

Underneath, there’s a Beastified version of Human Bruce’s favourite grey wool coat, complete with buttons.
Beastie Bruce's Wool Coat - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd, in Russian-doll-like fashion, that’s removable too!
Bruce Beastie's Wool Coat and Hi-Viz Vest - Beastie Accessories by CrawCrafts Beasties
What’s he got on under there, then?
Sporting Gear for Beastie Bruce - CrawCrafts BeastiesAha! It’s a blue running top! I chose a colour that matches the shirt Human Bruce got for taking part in the Dublin Marathon… See, I told you he was sporty! His stripey beanie hat is also a marathon souvenir.
Bruce Beastie's Beanie - Beastie Accessories by CrawCrafts Beasties

At this point, I should probably mention that Human Bruce isn’t originally from round these parts. He and his wife Sue have been living in Dublin for the last few years, having moved over from Australia for work commitments. Apparently, he’s become quite interested in the Irish sport of hurling during his time here… So, surprise surprise, Beastie Bruce wants a slice of that action too!

And thanks to his magnetic paws, he can pick up and set down his hurley at will!
Beastie Bruce's Magnetic Paws - CrawCrafts BeastiesGood work, Beastie Bruce! It gives me great pleasure to present you with this special Beastie-sized medal.

Fortunately, he seems to be a gracious winner. Let’s reward him further with… Some more accessories! I reckon he needs something to go in that nice blue backpack.
Bruce Beastie's Backpack - Beastie Accessories by CrawCrafts BeastiesHow about a tasty croissant to snack on? It’s Human Bruce’s favourite way to start the day! This one is made of felted wool – the perfect low-fat, high-fibre treat for a Beastie on the go.
A Beastie-Sized Croissant - CrawCrafts Beasties

And, because reading “The Irish Times” has become a cherished part of Human Bruce’s Dublin routine…
Beastified Irish Times - Beastie Accessories by CrawCrafts BeastiesI think he’s finally good to go!
What's in Beastie Bruce's Backpack? CrawCrafts BeastiesOh, and although he’s been wearing them throughout all the pictures in this post, let’s not forget those glasses! Some careful work with needle and pliers meant that I could capture the thin metal frames of Human Bruce’s specs.
Beastie Bruce's Glasses - Beastie Accessories by CrawCrafts BeastiesPhew! It’s only when I write a post like this that I realise how much goes into each and every Beastification. Still, this was such a fun project. Then seeing Human Bruce sharing pictures of his new monster buddy was the icing on the cake!

By the way, if you have someone in your life who you think merits a full Beastification, all you have to do is drop me a line and we’ll get the process under way!

Alrighty, enjoy the rest of your weekend… Are you being active like Bruce Beastie, or taking it easy? Let us know in the comments! I’ll be back in a week and a bit, hopefully with a slightly clearer schedule… See you then!

Rock Girl Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties

Beasties Rock!

Hey there everyone! It’s a sunny spring Tuesday in Dublin, and I’ve a fresh new Beastie to share with you all! Now, from the title, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this one has a geological theme… But in fact it’s more of a rock ‘n’ roll vibe we’re going for! Hey there, Beastie lady!
Rock Girl Beastie - Commissions by CrawCrafts BeastiesThis Beastie was requested as a very special birthday gift and she needed to match her new buddy’s look as closely as possible. So, that boiled down to a pairing of flashes of bright colour with a few nods to gothic/heavy metal style. No problemo!

I started out with the black hoodie. The hood can be worn up or down…
Beastie Hoodie - CrawCrafts Beasties… And is removable, too. However, after several instances of Beastie nudity on this blog, I’ve decided this little monster is going to stay dressed. We don’t want to be getting a reputation.

The hoodie also features an embroidered zip, just because zip manufacturers haven’t caught on yet to the need for non-human-sized clothing fastenings. Now, it’s normal for me to have at least one “go overboard” moment with every Beastification I take on, and this time around it manifested itself as the quest for fake zip perfection. In the end, I used short stitches with a slight overlap to create the effect of interlocking zip teeth… What do you think?
Embroidered Zip Detail - Rock Girl Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd now that the hoodie hood is down, you will have noticed that this Beastie is rocking some rather spiffy piercings and a cute bob and fringe!
Beastie Jewellery and Hairstyle - CrawCrafts BeastiesI made sure to keep the individual strands of hair quite fine, though – just to make sure her hair wasn’t too big to fit inside her hoodie hood.

Then, I completed her styling with some winged eyeliner and eyelashes. Just tuck your hair behind your ears there, so we can see…
Beastie Makeup - CrawCrafts BeastiesVery nice!

And while her beautiful mustard yellow complexion and turquoise stripes mostly ticked the “splash of colour” box, we decided that a bright pink backpack would complete the look.
Beastie Backpack - Rock Girl Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesAs you can see, it tucks in neatly underneath the hoodie hood, so she can bring it with her come rain or shine!

Then, she’ll definitely need something to go inside that backpack, right? Here you go!
Cookie Time! CrawCrafts BeastiesBeastification complete… Rock on!
Rock Girl Beastie, Ready to Go! CrawCrafts BeastiesMany thanks to Caspar for this awesome Beastie project… And to all of you for dropping in to visit! Paddy and Plunkett will be back next Tuesday, so be sure to join us then.

Enjoy your week!

Rugby Shirt Featured - Wales Rugby Jersey - CrawCrafts Beasties

A Wales of a Time!

Well hello there everyone!  This week I’m finally getting around to sharing a sort-of-commission that was requested by long-term BeastieBuddy Jan, who blogs at The Snail of Happiness. She already opened her home to a pair of Beasties last summer…
Ready for the Garden - CrawCrafts Beasties… But following a Grand Slam victory for Wales in the Six Nations rugby tournament earlier this year, she thought a special celebratory addition to their wardrobe was in order. So I found a willing Beastie model to help me get the sizing right, and TA-DAAAAAAH!
Rugby Shirt Front - Wales Rugby Jersey - CrawCrafts BeastiesOne Beastified Wales Rugby jersey!

We decided to go for a classic short-sleeved shirt, with a crisp white felt collar. Then I embroidered the Welsh Rugby Union logo on one side…
Rugby Shirt WRU Logo -Wales Rugby Jersey - CrawCrafts Beasties… And added an appliquéd number 8 on the back!
Shirt Back - Beastified Wales Rugby Jersey - CrawCrafts BeastiesThe significance of the number 8 is still a mystery to us here at Beastie Towers, but it’s clearly got some sort of special meaning to Jon Beastie and his human counterpart. I’m keeping an eye on their blog in case an explanation is forthcoming!

And here is the jersey, being expertly modelled by Jon Beastie himself! Looking good, sir!

(Plus I was able to heave a sigh of relief that it fitted!)

Any other sports-loving Beasties out there? Be sure to tell us all about your monster fan moments in the comments below!

And we’ll be back next week with some late spring shenanigans from Paddy and Plunkett… Hope to catch you then!

Feline the Beastie Love!

Hello everybody! I’m a little later on my blogging than usual this week… But I promised you a new Beastie, and here she is!
JuliaMusings Beastie with Kitty - CrawCrafts BeastiesMeet Julia Beastie! This particular monster lady was made as a very special “Yay, you finished your MA thesis” gift… And as you can see, she’s not travelling alone. She’s being kept company by her feline felt friend, Paddy the cat!

Let’s take a closer look at him, shall we?
Paddy the Beastie Cat - CrawCrafts BeastiesNow, Beasties with pet cats aren’t new – you may remember that I made a few for the Dublin Cat Fair, back in November.
Cat Owner Beastie by CrawCrafts BeastiesHowever, this was the first time I had attempted to copy a particular cat’s markings. Since this Beastie’s human counterpart is the proud owner of a devilishly handsome polydactyl cat, it only seemed right that Felt Paddy paid proper tribute to Real Paddy.

Fortunately, the wonders of needle felting allowed me to add tiger stripes to his coat, and give him a white nose, bib and paws!

Now, on to the Beastie herself! I love her lustrous alpaca locks…
Julia Beastie's Hair - Commission by CrawCrafts Beasties… And the combination of delicate green skin with rich dusky rose stripes!

Next, I believe I promised you a few accessories? I thought a book might keep her entertained as she travelled to her new home…
Penguin Classics, Beastie Style - CrawCrafts BeastiesAaah, you can’t beat those classics! Although I adjusted this Anne Brontë novel (a favourite of Human Julia’s, I hear) sliiiightly to make it suitable for a Beastie audience.

Then, since Human Julia has already made a name for herself as a theatre reviewer, Julia Beastie had to have a notebook and pen for her own note-taking and reviewing activities.
Theatre Notebook and Pen - Beastie Accessories by CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd how about a ticket to a show, to complete the set?
Carousel Theatre Ticket - CrawCrafts Beasties“Carousel” is one of Human Julia’s favourites, so it’s fairly safe to assume that her new Beastie companion will enjoy it too. Just one thing, though…

“My paws are a bit full at the minute – maybe you could take all that cool stuff…”
Everything a theatre-loving Beastie needs! CrawCrafts Beasties“… And pop it in my backpack for me?”
Packing the Beastie Backpack - CrawCrafts Beasties
“Cheers!”

And the good news for Beastie Paddy (who looks so comfortable cuddled up in Julia Beastie’s arms) is that he can stay exactly where he is while the backpack goes on!
Beastie Backpack - CrawCrafts BeastiesAs you can see, the straps clip into place at the base of the bag. That means they can simply be slipped around a Beastie arm and attached!
Beastie Backpack in Place - CrawCrafts BeastiesPerfect!

And better still… Here’s the pair of them meeting Paddy for the first time!
Julia Beastie at Home - CrawCrafts BeastiesHere’s wishing them all kinds of monster adventures together!

So, thanks for joining us for this latest Beastification… I should have a monster adventure of my own to share with you next week, so be sure to swing by! Catch you then!

Paddy Plunkett Daffodils - Spring Break - CrawCrafts Beasties

Springing Back into Action!

Hey look! I’M BACK!

Paddy Plunkett Daffodils - Spring Break - CrawCrafts BeastiesNo, I haven’t been hiding out in the daffodil patch with Paddy and Plunkett for the last month… Although I bet that would be a party!

I’ve been keeping busy with knitting classes, plus a little non-Beastie-based work. It’s always a good idea to keep food on the table, and yarn in the stash! I’ve also been spending a heap of time in my new studio, where Ophelia is making sure I don’t slack off.
Ophelia - Studio Kitty - CrawCrafts BeastiesSince we last spoke, I’ve been gradually moving more of my crafting kit out of Beastie Towers and into the studio… One blue IKEA bag at a time! Honestly, what did craftspeople use to transport their gear around before?! I’ve also picked up a few things to make my little workspace a bit more “Beastie”, and I’ll be sure to give you the new and improved photo tour in a future post.

So, what’s coming up over the next couple of weeks? Well, I’ve some new Beasties to share…
New Beasties - Commissions 2019 - CrawCrafts Beasties…Plus a couple to finish up and add to my online store (AT LAST)!

And once the April showers ease off a little, I know I won’t be able to stop certain little monsters from hitting the road! Expect to see Explorer Beastie and Paddy and Plunkett setting out to seek adventure again soon.
Tree Blossom - Paddy and Plunkett - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd what about you? What have you been up to since we last saw each other? Be sure to tell us all your latest news in the comments!

We’ll be back next week with a new Beastie for you all to meet. Get ready… She has so many accessories!

See you then!

Explorer Beastie with Spring Daffodils - CrawCrafts Beasties

Early Spring at Beastie Towers!

Did you know that, according to the Celtic calendar, Spring in Ireland begins at the start of February? Most of the time, it doesn’t feel particularly Spring-like until well into March (especially last year!) but 2019 has been so mild. Explorer Beastie’s miniature daffodils have been blooming for a couple of weeks already!
Explorer Beastie with Spring Daffodils - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd with the warming temperatures and gradually lengthening days, activity levels have been picking up a little too! Today I wanted to share some of the extra-curricular activities that have been keeping me and the Beasties busy this past while.

A Spring Clean… For My Skills!

Aaaah, the sewing machine! My old nemesis. For too long, your ways have eluded me… In fact, slow as it is to stitch seams by hand, it has often seemed quicker than the usual sew it-rip it-resew it-rip it process that usually accompanies a stint on the machine.
Vintage Singer Sewing Machine - CrawCrafts BeastiesBut this year, I decided enough was enough. Let’s master those sewing machine demons! So I signed up for a class with The City Seamstress. I’ve already picked up some valuable tips that have made my work better (and helped my confidence, too) and right now I’m working on a project which is neeeearly finished, so I should hopefully be able to share pics very soon!

And as well as learning, I’ve been teaching too! January was a really busy time for my knitting classes – it’s like half of Dublin decided to put “learn to knit” at the top of their New Year’s Resolutions list! This spurred me on to tackle something I’ve been meaning to do for a while… Make up a really easy sweater pattern.
A Super-Easy Srping Sweater - CrawCrafts BeastiesYou see, a lot of students want to take on the challenge of making a jumper quite early on… But even the simplest-looking designs often have next-level knitting skills lurking in the pattern. And while some new knitters thrive on being thrown in at the deep end, more than a few are put off by the idea of fancy shaping techniques, decorative seams and the alphabet soup of abbreviations that crop up in many “beginner” patterns.

So, what you see in the picture is sleeve #2 of an almost-finished sweater of… Just rectangles! And yes, the design is probably far from original, but this version is mine! That makes it easier to guide people through all the pre-knitting preparations, like sizing and choosing yarn, and also to suggest tweaks if anyone wants to put their own stamp on it.

Also, I get a new sweater.

But it can’t be all work and no play, of course. There has to be time for a…

Spring Breaaaaaaaak!

That means a quick trip out to Donegal with my brother, now pretty much a February tradition. This is the third year we’ve hit the road and headed about as far north-west as it’s possible to go in Ireland without falling into the sea. You can catch up with the epic 2017 and 2018 travelogues if you missed them!

Explorer Beastie sat this one out – well, he had to look after his garden, and I really think he should agree to take a bath before he goes on any more location photoshoots – but we did have company for the trip…
A Furry Friend for Our Road Trip - CrawCrafts Beasties… And I couldn’t resist leaving a monster behind on one of the beaches, just to prove I’d passed through!
Rock Monster in Donegal - CrawCrafts BeastiesWe also had a delicious lunch at Nancy’s Barn in Ballyliffin… Well worth a visit if you find yourself in this part of the world!

And Finally…

A few Beasties have been helping author (and Beastie Buddy) Tammie Painter to celebrate the launch of her latest book, Domna Part Two: The Solon’s Son!

//www.instagram.com/embed.js

This novel is the second in a series of six about ambitious, resourceful Sofia Domna, whose plans are knocked sideways by a chance encounter in her local marketplace. If you haven’t discovered this series yet, you really should… And the best bit is that Tammie (generous to a fault) is giving away the first novel, The Sun God’s Daughter, to anyone who signs up to her mailing list. Go on, you know you want to!

Well, that’s all the news from here… What have you all been up to? Is Spring springing where you are? Be sure to tell us all about it in the comments!
