Sunshine, Sunflowers and a Summer Singalong

Hey there everyone! And WOW, is it hot here! Well, for Ireland… I won’t invite eye-rolls and derisive laughter from those of you who have been experiencing actual heatwaves over the last couple of weeks by citing temperatures. Let’s just say it’s been a little warmer than usual, the sun is out, and it’s not so bad that we can’t travel because the weather is already lovely right here at home.

And THAT was a pretty roundabout way to introduce this week’s new Beastie… A little monster girl who has a distinctly summery, sunshiney vibe. Oh look, here she is now! Hello!

Personalised Beastie Commission by CrawCrafts Beasties

Oooh, I love your dress! The geometric print makes me think of cartoon sunshines, or maybe sunflowers… Give us a twirl, there.

Beastie Dress, front and back - Commissions by CrawCrafts Beasties

Very nice! I modelled this vintage-style dress on one owned by this Beastie’s human counterpart. The fabric is different, but I copied the full collar and slightly puffed sleeves of the original.

You might also have noticed that there’s been a bit of a change to the usual Beastie layout for this project. No stripey legs here! This little monster lady is rocking a pair of cute white knee socks instead.

Now, what next? Sticking with the retro style of her dress, we’re going to add a pair of cool red-framed glasses.

Beastie Glasses by CrawCrafts Beasties

As usual, they’re completely removable, so she can pop them on top of her head when they’re not needed.

Very nice! And, like her sister who joined us for last week’s post, this Beastie also has magic magnetic paws…

… To help her hold on to all her awesome accessories…

Beastie with Sunflower - CrawCrafts Beasties

… Like this Beastie-sized sunflower! My sources informed me that our Beastie’s human counterpart loves sunflowers, so I just had to include one in her accessory lineup.

It’s planted in a felt pot of 100% wool roving, which has helped it to grow nice and tall, with plenty of fresh green felt leaves.

And what else can she do? Well, I did mention a singalong, didn’t I? And good news – we get musical accompaniment!

Here you go, Miss Beastie – a teeny little ukulele for you, so you can play us a summery tune!

Has anyone any requests? Be sure to share your favourite summertime song in the comments!

And you might think that this haul would be plenty to keep a pair of Beastie sisters happy… But wait, there’s more! Join us next week to find out who joined them when they ventured forth from Beastie Towers into the wider world… See you then!

Help me, Superhero Max Beastie!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a new Beastie!
Superhero Max Beastie - A Commission by CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd not just any new Beastie – this one is a SUPERHERO!

Last year during lockdown, a customer contacted me to ask if I’d be able to make a Christmas gift for her daughter. This girl LOVES superheroes, and even has a secret alter-ego herself… When danger looms, she transforms into Superhero Max! Not content with merely fighting crime, Superhero Max is also a dab hand at fixing electrical boxes – you know, those anonymous grey or green metal cases you see on pretty much every street.

Well, with material like that to work with, how could I refuse?

First of all, I thought I’d better provide this little monster lady with some tools. She’ll need those if she’s going to fix anything!
Tools of the Trade - Superhero Max Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesNormally I’d pop magnets inside these so the Beastie can hold them securely… But since her human counterpart is still quite young, I went for elastic loops on the handles instead, just to be on the safe side.
Utility Belt + Tools - CrawCrafts BeastiesAs you can see, they still fit snugly into her utility belt, ready for action.

She also has a cream-coloured super-suit, based on Superhero Max’s own favourite outfit. And this one comes complete with a special custom-designed hand-embroidered logo!

But of course, it’s oh-so-important that her identity remains a secret. Don’t worry, Miss Beastie! I’ve got you covered.
Superhero Max in Disguise - CrawCrafts BeastiesWith a red felt mask and starry cape (inspired by her human counterpart’s passion for outer space), she’ll be able to head out completely incognito.

But wait a sec… Doesn’t every SuperBeastie need a super-sidekick?

Yes, absolutely!
Superhero Max and Hop - CrawCrafts BeastiesJust as Superhero Max never goes anywhere without her trusted bunny friend Hop, this Beastie has a cuddly rabbit companion to join her on her adventures, too. He even has the same uniform, including a removable mini cape!
Hop Closeups - Superhero Max Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesI also had fun adding in special bunny details, like a fluffy white tail and carrot-inspired sidekick logo.

Well, I think that’s all the angles covered! Just as well, because it looks like someone is ready for takeoff.
Superhero Max Beastie Takes Off - CrawCrafts BeastiesUp, up and… AWAAAAAY!
Superhero Max Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesYikes, she’s flown right out of the teeny photo studio! Um, can I ask everyone to please keep an eye out and report any low-flying Beasties in your neighbourhood directly to Beastie HQ? Thanks and see you next week!

Vintage Beastie Playing the Drum - CrawCrafts Beasties

Vintage Fashion, Beastie Style 2 – All the Accessories!

Hey there everyone! And oh wow, look… I managed to post on a Tuesday! If you missed last week’s post (and who could blame you, it went out on Friday), we were catching up with this Beastie lady and her rather awesome vintage inspired look.
Vintage Style Beastie, a Commission by CrawCrafts BeastiesBut while it could be argued that “clothes maketh the monster”, this woolly little gal has much more going on. Let’s take a look at what she took with her when she left Beastie Towers for her new home.

First up…
Beastie Drum - Vintage Style Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesIs that a Beastie-sized drum? It certainly is!

And thanks to her magic magnetic paws, our friend can grab those drumsticks and belt out a thumping beat!

Drumming is thirsty work though… Perhaps some refreshments are in order?
Beastie Refreshments - CrawCrafts Beasties“Oooh, a Beastie-sized glass of red wine? Don’t mind if I do!”

I’m going to guess it’s her favourite vintage 😉

This wine glass was a pretty challenging make. Trying to sew see-through material is always tricky, and even calling on my old arch-nemesis, glue, didn’t provide any easy shortcuts! In the end, I went with keeping stitches to a minimum, using the most unobtrusive thread colours I could find, and throwing some unusual transparent items into the mix. I quite liked the effect that resulted from using crystal beads to make the stem!Beastie Wine Glass - CrawCrafts Beasties

There was even space inside for a discreetly-placed magnet, so she can quite literally hold her liquor!

“Definitely! Let’s eat!”Let's Eat! Vintage Style Beastie by CrawCrafts BeastiesWell, since she’s all set up with the proper cutlery and everything…
Beastie Cutlery - CrawCrafts Beasties… We’ll see what we can rustle up in the Beastie kitchen!

Oh, that does look good!
A Feast fit for a Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesOur vintage loving Beastie’s human counterpart loves a bit of fine dining… So hopefully her new monster friend will be suitably impressed by this needle-felted haute cuisine!

It looks like it’s passed the taste test! Let’s leave her to enjoy the rest of her meal. She’ll need to keep her strength up to look after all this stuff!Vintage Beastie with Accessories - CrawCrafts Beasties

Retro Style Beastie, A Commission by CrawCrafts Beasties

Vintage Fashion, Beastie Style

Greetings, Beastie friends! And wow, do I have a new Beastie treat for you this week… A fashion-conscious monster lady with an eye for retro style. Say hello to everyone, Ms Beastie!Vintage Style Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties

This Beastie was commissioned as a gift for a stylish girl who’s also big into vintage, and I have to admit that I had so much fun making her clothes and accessories.

For starters, let’s take a look at that dress.Vintage Style Print Dress - Commissions - CrawCrafts Beasties

Oh, do I love a good bold print! They’re my biggest craft shopping weakness. My fabric stash is heaving with fat quarters I’ve picked up while travelling, or random half-metres I bought “as a treat” when all I went into the shop for was a spool of thread. I was on the verge of wondering if perhaps I had a problem… But with all my favourite haberdasheries still closed, I was incredibly glad to have this stockpile! It meant that I was able to offer my customer a selection of prints with a bit of a 60s/70s flavour, and I’m so happy she chose this one. It caught my eye immediately when I saw it in the shop, and the colours look great with the Beastie’s lustrous red locks.

If you look closely, you’ll notice that I’ve been monkeying around with my construction techniques lately, too.Beastie Dress, Back - CrawCrafts Beasties

Facings in the bodice area on both sides of the dress make for a neater neckline and armholes, and the closure on the back sits better as well. Happy days!

The dress has a sweet A-line shape and closes with a hook and eye fastener on the back.

Oh, and while we’re looking at the back, let’s get another shot of that amazing hair.Red Hair - Beastie Style - CrawCrafts Beasties

This wool and alpaca yarn is outrgeously soft, and so much fun to style! It’s quite chunky though, so I cut down on volume by teasing some of the strands apart to make thinner pieces. Then I completed the hairstyle with a cute mint-green felt bow!

Turning around to the front again… A nice flick of eyeliner adds a bit of retro chic to any outfit, doesn’t it?Beastie Eyeliner - Retro Style - CrawCrafts Beasties

And this Beastie has more in her makeup bag, too. Behold, for the first time ever… Beastie nail varnish!Beastie Nail Varnish - CrawCrafts Beasties

I’m not a big fan of using glue, so the best option for a monster manicure turned out to be pearlescent sequins held in place with embroidery thread. They’re a sweet baby pink that flashes pastel yellow or blue, depending on how the light catches them.

Then, to complete the outfit, a pair of Beastie-sized pumps!Beastie Shoes - Beastie Vintage Style - CrawCrafts Beasties

These are based on shoes that our Beastie friend’s human counterpart actually owns. And this isn’t the only time we took style inspiration from her wardrobe… I also Beastified her earrings!Beastie Earrings - CrawCrafts Beasties

Aren’t these cool? And she doesn’t have to wear them all the time, either. The lobster claw clasps easily clip in to the small silver “everyday” hoops in her ears.

And last but not least… Let’s complete the look with a pair of Beastie-sized cat’s eye glasses!

Beastie Glasses - Retro Style Cat's Eye Glasses - CrawCrafts Beasties

This pair marks a bit of a departure in Beastie spectacle style – I don’t normally get to make bright or pastel-coloured frames! As usual, they have bendy wire legs to fit neatly around the Beastie’s head, and real lenses made from clear plastic.

Now, I know I said “last but not least” just then, but there’s more to this Beastie than her cool outfit. You see, over the last while, I’ve had a whole lot of “GME”s… That’s when I do up a sketch with lots of accessory options for someone and they say “Give me everything!”. And this was a serious GME! So be sure to join us again next week to see what else this Beastie took with her to her new home!

PS…

Beastie Accessories Galore! CrawCrafts Beasties

Beastie Accessories Bonanza!

Hey there everyone! It’s a rainy old day here in Dublin, but even blustery showers can’t dampen my excitement about today’s post. This is essentially “What I Did During Lockdown, Part 1″… A monster haul of Beastie accessories for a very special woolly girl.
tierneycreates Beastie Face Closeup - CrawCrafts Beasties, Beastie HQHey there, tierneycreates Beastie!

For anyone who hasn’t met her before, tierneycreates Beastie lives with Tierney of tierneycreates.com. She regularly pops up in Tierney’s blog posts (she recently took a trip to the library) and occasionally takes on the task of writing them herself when her human counterpart is busy.

Like a lot of people, tierneycreates Beastie went a bit crazy ordering stuff online while we were all sheltering in place.

Ordering online - tierneycreates.com
tierneycreates Beastie indulging in a little retail therapy, borrowed from tierneycreates.com

Since the only person making Beastie accessories is yours truly, this meant I really had my work cut out for me!

First of all, she ordered some refreshments. And with many of my local off-licences offering home deliveries at the time, I decided it might indeed be a good idea to get in on that racket. Two bottles of Hop Monster IPA (a favourite Beastie tipple) coming right up!
Hop Monster IPA - Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts BeastiesWith libraries closed, getting her paws on some reading material was also high on tierneycreates Beastie’s to-do list. Human Tierney loves books about craft, personal development and home decor, so these titles should go down a treat.
Beastie Books - Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts BeastiesNext, she realised that this hat…
tierneycreates Beastie Dreads and Hat - Beastie HQ… Needed a matching scarf.
New Scarf - Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts Beasties“But hey, it’s not winter just yet! I should probably update my summer wardrobe as well. Oooh, polka dots!”
Beastie Summer Dress - Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts BeastiesInto the cart it goes.

Fortunately there are always a few Beasties knocking around here at Beastie Towers, so I was able to tailor it to tierneycreates Beastie’s approximate measurements!

However, all this staring at the computer screen was beginning to take its toll.

“I know! I’ll treat myself to a smartphone… Then I can order from anywhere!”

Fair enough. One Beast-iPhone coming right up!
Beast-iPhone - Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts BeastiesLook how teeny it is! I have enough trouble trying to type on the human-sized ones. This super-slim model is made from felt with a shiny reflective ribbon screen so it looks the part.

Of course, tierneycreates Beastie isn’t just shopping for herself. So that her beloved miniature miniature Schnauzer Mikelet can join her on longer adventures…
Beastie Besties - tierneycreates Beastie and Dog by CrawCrafts Beasties… She picked up a doggy backpack, just like the one Human Tierney uses to bring Mike the Miniature Schnauzer out and about!
Beastie Doggy Backpack - Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts BeastiesThe top of the backpack is open with a drawstring so Mikelet can peek out and stay involved in the action. It also goes rather nicely with the sundress!

And finally, one of my most challenging Beastie accessories to date. She asked for…
Beastie Sewing Machine - Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts BeastiesA sewing machine!

This top-of-the-range miniature marvel is what every Beastie quilter dreams of. Bernina may make the creme-de-la-creme of human-sized machines, but if you’re a little woolly monster, a Beastnina is what you want to have on your craft table.

So, what the Beastie wants, the Beastie gets! But how on earth do you make one? Well, I began by building a framework from wire, and filled out the shape by sculpting it with needle-felted wool. Then I hand-stitched a tailored felt “skin” to go on top, so the machine would have the same smooth lines as the full-size version. Finally, the details were added with embroidery and appliqué. Phew!

Still, I bet it’ll help tierneycreates Beastie to start stitching up a storm in no time.
Beastie Sewing Machine - tierneycreates Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts BeastiesI just hope she still has time to help Tierney with her blog posts every now and again!

Here’s the finished haul…
Beastie Accessories Galore! CrawCrafts Beasties… And I was delighted to get a picture of Miss Beastie looking very summery in her new outfit!
tierneycreates Beastie in her new dress - Tierney DH/CrawCrafts BeastiesThanks so much to Tierney for this awesome project, and for enabling her Beastie’s online shopping addiction! For any of you who have also been (over)indulging in a little mail-order lately, you can confess all in the comments below. We won’t judge!

We’ll be back next Tuesday with another new Beastie for you to meet – stay safe and see you then!

Ready for Hiking - CrawCrafts Beasties

Beasties Hiking to New Heights

Hi there everyone! I have to say, it’s not really hiking weather out there today… But I’m sure the new Beastie we’re about to meet would happily give it a try anyway. After all, I did kit her out with everything she could possibly need for a day of strolling in the hills!

So, say hello to Hiker Beastie!
Hiker Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesI created this Beastie as a very special birthday gift for an active lady who loves to spend time in the great outdoors. And since she lives in Scotland, I needed to make sure the weather never had a chance to rain on her parade (or hiking trail). That’s why she’s wearing a very fetching handknitted bobble hat…
Beastie Hiking Equipment 1 - Woolly Hat - CrawCrafts Beasties… A rain jacket with handy hood…
Beastie Hiking Jacket - CrawCrafts Beasties(Did you notice the teeny embroidered zips?)

… And a pair of go-anywhere hiking boots.
Beastie Hiking Boots - CrawCrafts BeastiesI stitched some felt treads to the soles of these boots to make them extra-grippy, and finished them with some embroidery thread laces. Now she’s fully equipped from head to toe!

Well, almost. If she’s away for the day, she’ll probably need a backpack too. Et voila!
Hiker Beastie Backpack - CrawCrafts BeastiesThis one is handstitched from 100% wool felt, and should hold everything she needs.

And when she’s not hiking…

… This Beastie has another hobby to keep her busy! We’ll need to lose the jacket for this part though.
A Different Outfit - Hiker Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesWhy, you ask? Well, this Beastie lady also enjoys a game of shinty – a Scottish variant of ball-and-stick games like hockey, or the hurling we play here in Ireland. From what I could tell when I was doing my research, it can be pretty full-on… So this outfit will give her much more freedom of movement as she tears around the pitch!

Oh, I should probably provide her with a shinty stick so she can join in properly.
Beastie with Shinty Stick - Hiking Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesShinty sticks have a distinctive wedge-shaped head that sets them apart from the sticks used in hockey, hurling and other related sports like cammag (from the Isle of Man), bando (Wales) and Knattleikr (played by the Vikings in Iceland). In my quest to get the shape right, I was lucky enough to find this video of modern-day craftsmen making human-sized versions. I love how hands-on the process is!

Here’s my Beastified version – and our woolly friend holding onto it tightly with her magic magnet paws!
Shinty Stick and Magnet Paws - CrawCrafts Beasties

And one more thing…

Up a mountain or on the shinty pitch, life is more fun when you have a companion to share it with – right? And as a final touch, this Beastie has a four-legged friend to keep her company on her adventures.
Hiker Beastie's Hiking Companion - CrawCrafts Beasties

This Beastie-sized pup is modelled on the pet pooch of our monster lady’s human counterpart, and is made from needle-felted merino and blue-faced Leicester wool.

Ready for walkies? I think so!
Ready for Hiking - CrawCrafts BeastiesThanks to Anne for requesting this very special Beastification for her sister-in-law’s birthday!

And we’ll be back on Tuesday… Yes, Tuesday! With real life kicking back in again, I’m returning to my regular once-a-week blogging regime. If you’ve got a taste for past Beasties as a result of my lockdown Flashback Fridays though, you’ll find lots more in the website Gallery, or by scrolling through the Commissions category of the BeastieBlog.

See you next week! Have a good one 🙂

Tools of the Trade – Monster Maker’s Toolkit

Hey there everybody! You know, after Friday’s post on Beastie work accessories, and reading about Tierney’s recent studio update (seriously, take a look! I have such storage envy) I thought I’d do something a little different this week. So, let’s have a rare behind-the-scenes post… How about I introduce you to the hard-working tools, equipment and knick-knacks that help me perform the alchemic transformation of wool into monsters?

And because the internet loves a top 5, I’ve picked the 5 tools that make my crafting life so much easier. Let’s go!

1. Swiss Army Knife

Swiss Army Knife - Monster Making Tools - CrawCrafts Beasties
Not even one of the biggest, fanciest ones either! I think this is the most basic model out there, but I use it ALL THE TIME. The scissors are super-sharp, and they’re great for getting into awkward corners. I also use the tweezers to unpick threads, tie knots, handle small pattern pieces and push stuffing into narrow or hard-to-reach places. The toothpick works for that too, and the nail file is great for smoothing off the wooden dowels that go inside some Beastie accessories. All that, and it folds up to the size of a pencil eraser! Genius!

And while we’re on the subject of cutting…

2. Rotary Cutter

Rotary Cutter - Beastie Making Tools - CrawCrafts Beasties

Pictured here with its lovely assistants Cutting Mat and Metal Ruler. I’m still a fan of scissors for cutting out, but for the many, many pattern pieces that call for crisp, straight lines, you can’t beat this handy trio. They’re especially good for dealing with thick, unstretchy fabrics like wool felt (my craft material of choice), so any new project will probably see me wielding my yellow cutting wheel at some point!

3. Magic Magnifying Lamp

Magnifying Lamp - Tools - CrawCrafts Beasties

Otherwise known as “the reason I’m not blind”. After enviously looking at the supersize versions in the labs of technicians on “Forensic Files”, imagine my delight when one of my very own appeared in my Christmas stocking a couple of years ago. This thing is brilliant! The magnifying lens shows up every stitch in glorious detail, and the circular daylight bulb means that I’m not working around the shadows cast by my hands. It’s also probably cut my electricity bill in half while I’ve been working from home during quarantine!

4. Circular Knitting Needles

Circular Knitting Needles - Tools - CrawCrafts Beasties

These are the reason I became hopelessly hooked on knitting again. Circular needles allow you to knit tubes, rather than flat bits that will eventually need to be sewn together. Now, I don’t mind sewing. But if I can knit and have something that is already almost finished when I cast it off, that’s definitely a bonus! What you see above are my most-used sizes, but I have… um… a few more that aren’t pictured.

Anyway, moving swiftly on… I’ll distract you from my knitting needle hoard with magic disappearing pens!

5. Air-Erase Markers

Air Erase Marker - Tools - CrawCrafts Beasties

Well, full disclosure – it’s the ink that disappears, not the pen. There are lots of options out there for marking your pattern pieces onto fabric before cutting them out, but these are far and away my favourite. They’re thinner than tailor’s chalk, don’t rip up felt like chalk pens do, and the marks fade away all by themselves. Or, if you’re in a hurry, you can help them along with a spritz of water. The lines are also easy to see on most colours, apart from the very darkest ones. I’m still looking for something that draws well on black felt!

Did I miss anything out?

Oh yeah, Beastie assistants!
Party Hard, Beasties! CrawCrafts BeastiesHmm, then again… Perhaps not, if you actually want to get anything done.

What makes your creative life easier? Be sure to share the tools of your trade with us in the comments! And we’ll be back on Friday with another look at Beasties past – see you then!

Flashback Friday – Craziest Beastie Accessories EVER!

Hey there Beastie friends! I hope you’ve all been having a good week. For the last while, a couple of big commissions have been keeping me super-busy… So many accessories! I’m really looking forward to being able to share the finished projects with you all very soon, but in the meantime I thought I’d use this Flashback Friday post to revisit some of my most challenging Beastie accessories EVER!

Weekes Album Cover, 2017

Beastie-sized Vinyl, by CrawCrafts BeastiesI was reminded of this when I looked back at “Definitely Maybeast” in last week’s Flashback Friday post. This project predated the arrival of my magic magnifying lamp, and I’m still wondering how I managed to see to do those stitches in the dead of winter. You can read more about the creation of this Beastie in the Gallery – she has some pretty cool stuff!

Carcassonne Board Game Box, 2016

Beastie Carcassonne Board Game, by CrawCrafts BeastiesAnother bit of teeny sewing that somehow fell into the BMML (Before Magic Magnifying Lamp) era. I look at these now and wonder how I’m not blind! This appliquéd felt and embroidery board game was an important part of the accessory lineup for a wedding commission though, so it was totally worth cutting all those tiny felt pieces and stitching them in place.

The TARDIS (x2!)

I made my first Doctor Who Beastie for a Christmas order in 2015… And how can a little woolly Time Lord travel the galaxy without a specially-adapted old-style police phone box?Doctor Who Beastie heading off to his Home Planet... CrawCrafts BeastiesThe Beastie TARDIS was made of felt, and reinforced with foam and interfacing so it didn’t collapse in like a woolly tent! I lined the inside with shiny silver material for a space-age feel, and embroidered on the window panes and lettering. The doors also close with velcro so the Doctor can travel in safety.

And when I posted about this make, despite the fact that my photos back then were hardly top notch, one of my regular blog readers decided that the man in her life would appreciate a Beastie Doctor of his own! So…
The Tardis, Inside and Out! CrawCrafts Beasties… I made a second one! And I took more photos that time. You can see the original posts about these commissions here and here.

From what I can remember, the trickiest part was cutting out the square panels under the windows. I invested in a rotary cutter, mat and metal ruler to help, but it was still slow going. Beastie Doctor Who seemed happy enough with the results though!
Guess Who! CrawCrafts Beasties

A Beastie-Sized Camera, 2018

A Beastie-Sized Camera, by CrawCrafts Beasties

Oh, I had fun with this one! It’s got it all – teeny sewing, a bit of embroidery, and I was able to incorporate a knitting pun to boot. I made this for Laura from A Pict in PA  – she’s a keen photographer, and, like me, she still likes to use a proper camera for her pictures. That’s worth celebrating! So I copied the shape of her DSLR as closely as possible…
Beastie Camera Features - CrawCrafts Beasties… And only went a bit overboard by making the lens and strap removable.
Taking the Beastie Camera Apart - CrawCrafts BeastiesOh well, sometimes you just have to! Laura’s little monster left Beastie Towers with a whole heap of other accessories too – check them out here!

And then finally… Sometimes Beastie accessories take a while to get right. But this one stands out as the most challenging ever – even now! Paws up if you remember…

The Beastie Dragon, 2015

Beastie Dragon, by CrawCrafts Beasties

This was one of those projects that just wouldn’t behave. I’d get one aspect sorted, only to have something else start causing problems! But I learned a lot about prototyping and materials choices from making it, and despite many, many discarded templates…
Test Run Dragons - CrawCrafts Beasties… I did end up with the ferocious-looking gold and silver dragon that my customer asked for! You can relive the entire, um, interesting experience here.

Well, that’s it for this time… But don’t worry if your favourite accessory didn’t make the cut this time around! I so enjoyed putting this together that I might do a second Beastie Accessories Roundup in a couple of weeks. Suggestions welcome, if you want to pitch in your two cents in the comments!

Have a monster weekend!

Happy Family Beasties, by CrawCrafts Beasties

Flashback Friday – Fashion-forward Family!

Hey there everyone! Ready to join me for another Flashback Friday? This time, I’ve decided to go for a three-for-the-price-of-one deal, with one of the sets of new family Beasties I’ve created over the years.

Does anyone remember this happy trio from waaaaay back in 2016?

A Monster Family, by CrawCrafts Beasties

They were made to celebrate the arrival of a cool couple’s first baby… And although the little one took centre stage, I had some serious fun with the grown-ups’ outfits.

Mama Beastie got a checked shirt and bomber jacket combo – a Beastie first, I should add.
Mama Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesWhile Dad was harking back to the “Madchester” era in a football shirt and parka. Check out the furry hood!
Dad Beastie's Parka - CrawCrafts BeastiesI also can’t believe I managed to do all that teeny embroidery on the album cover before I got my wondrous magnifying lamp!

You can see more pics of these family Beasties in their section of the Beastie Gallery.

And if you’re looking for a little something to keep you entertained this weekend, might I recommend…
From the Maker to the Made Podcast - CrawCrafts BeastiesBack before we were all confined to our homes, in a time when it was still perfectly normal to sit in a room and have a chat with someone, I was lucky enough to be interviewed by Barry for his excellent podcast series “From the Maker to the Made”. We talked about all sorts of stuff – what it’s like to make a living from creativity, the pros and cons of social media and, of course, Beasties!

Aaaand the episode is now live! If you’d like to give it a listen (on Spotify), you’ll find it here. You can also check it out wherever you normally pick up your podcasts… Just search “From the Maker to the Made”, then I’m in episode 18.

And now I’ve done all my self-promotion! Have a super sunny weekend wherever you are, and I’ll see you again on Tuesday!

Beastie Wedding Couple, by CrawCrafts Beasties

Monster Cheers to the Happy Couple!

Greetings, Beastie friends! And hooray, after a bit of a break, it’s new Beastie time again! Those of you who follow me over on Instagram might already have caught a glimpse of this handsome couple last week…

//www.instagram.com/embed.js… But I thought it was high time they got their moment in the blog spotlight. Hey there, guys!
Meet the Beastie Couple! CrawCrafts BeastiesNow, I don’t mind admitting that this was a pretty big project. All Beastifications are important, of course, but it was hinted that this pair would be joining the wedding party on the day. They’d be given the monster task of looking after (not eating!) the wedding cake, and the ceremony and reception were to take place in the oh-so-fancy Merchant Hotel in Belfast.

In short, these Beasties needed to look swish!

Fortunately, their human counterparts were on hand to narrow down my sartorial options. Armed with a photo of the very classy matching tuxedo jackets they were planning to wear for the reception dinner, I was able to get to work!

Here’s Mr D Beastie now, modelling his to great effect.
