Hello. My name is Helen, and I make monsters.
I’ve always had a fondness for weird and wonderful creatures… I suppose that’s to be expected when you grow up obsessively watching cartoons and the Muppets! And once I figured out that I could bring my imaginary friends to life with felt and yarn, I became hopelessly hooked on knitting and sewing as well!
Fast forward a few years…
…And I had moved on to more “grown up” knitted projects, like hats and scarves and socks. But one day I started to knit a pair of handwarmers that I didn’t have enough yarn to finish, and I improvised a pattern for a little monster to use up what remained of the ball.
Now they come in all shapes and sizes! Here, take a look at some of my favourite creations.
A life of their own…
Later, when I turned the Beasties loose on the world, it immediately became obvious that they have quite a taste for adventure! Find out what they’ve been up to in the weekly BeastieBlog… Or why not adopt your own, and see where they take you?

I’m at my happiest when I’m at my work table, surrounded by piles of colourful felt and yarn – and with a few Beastie helpers to lend a paw when I need them, of course.
Using high quality materials is super-important to me, so I hand-knit every little woolly monster using 100% natural fibre yarns. And since there’s been so much talk recently about the long-term effects of plastic on our planet, I’m now doing my best to use non-synthetic felts, fabrics and threads as much as possible in my work.
Want to delve a bit deeper into my design process?
Our Beastie community is global, and it’s growing all the time! Share your monster adventures, send us your Beastie pics, or just swing by and say hello… We can’t wait to hear from you!

Hi Anand, thanks for visiting! And you’re right, I LOVE what I do. Have a great weekend 🙂

Weirdly enough, they do… thanks for reading!
Hello newest Spikey! I know, a bit corny, eh, but that’s the term that has come to stick for those folk who are part of the clan known to be followers of Uncle Spike 🙂
Thank you… I really appreciate that as I for one, know how many interesting and entertaining blogs are out there.
My aim is to deliver an eclectic offering of posts, from my ‘point n shoot’ attempts at basic photography, to the sharing of my travel adventures over the decades, as well as day to day happenings here on the farm. Oh, plus a few observations on life as I see it, thrown in for good measure.
My promise to you is not to be overbearing, just a couple of posts a day, maybe 3 at weekends if I have something special to share. But if you are at a loose end one day, maybe you’ll enjoy trawling through some of my older stuff too. I have added plenty of categories to help in said digging process.
Thanks again and hope you have a great day…
Why thank you! I’m looking forward to finding out more about life in your part of the world (and your adventures overseas too)! Cheers for taking the time to stop by my blog and visit the Beasties!
Thanks Helen. Your blog is a little mad – but we so need more of that. I struggle to keep up with followers I have to admit, but I’ve moved away from the dark side just now and decided to follow your blog (my first new one in months) – Spikey’s n monsters, a cool mix if ever there was one.
Thanks, I’m flattered! It’s true that everyone needs a little monster-based fun in their lives, so I hope you enjoy following the Beasties’ adventures… all I need now is a natty name for my tribe of Beastie buddies. Thoughts, anyone?!
I think Beastie Buddies is actually pretty good
Your monsters are adorable. And adventurous too!
They do get around, don’t they?! Thanks for checking out my blog, and I hope you enjoy reading more about the Beasties and their adventures!

Awww, thank you! The Beasties and I are happy to have you aboard 😀
I love your work Helen and the name “Beasties” even more as my Scottish father used this word to refer
to all creatures, great and small!
Hi Kathy, thanks for stopping by! I’m a little bit Scottish myself, so maybe that’s where I got the name from! 😀
These are the cutest monsters; I’m sure they bring smiles to faces old and young wherever they pop up! They sure brightened my day!
Pleased to meet you, Helen!
Thanks for stopping by! It’s nice to meet you too… The Beasties and I enjoyed checking out your blog this morning 😀
You are artistic and resourceful!!! .
Just on a lighter note could you make a brown monster like me 🙂 🙂
I could, and I have! Brown wool is surprisingly hard to find in the shops, but I found some which I use for my special Irish Beasties! Here are some I made last year… https://crawcraftsbeasties.com/2014/06/26/been-a-while/
If you’d like to order your own, just send me an email… 😀

Oh wow, thank you! I’ll do my best to respond soon, but I still have a teeny backlog of awards posts left over from when I did Blogging 101 back in August! But thank you so much for thinking of me and my little monsters 😀
No hurry, it took me about a month to get around to it 🙂
Hahaha, I think at this stage I might have to do one massive post where I respond to them all 😀
yes that’s what I did 🙂 you get a noticeable increase of traffic on your site if you do this way 😉
Who doesn’t need a little of that every now and again? 😀 Thanks for the tip!
Awww ! Those are some cute looking monsters that you have made 🙂
Thank you! I have a lot of fun making them 😀 And the best bit is hearing stories from their adventures once they leave home! Thanks for your comment 😀
