Knitting Up A Monster Storm!

Hello there Beastie friends! It’s just a quick post from me today, but I realised that I have the perfect new Beastie to introduce to you. Stick around, it’ll only take a sec! Hey there, Knitter Beastie!
Knitter Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesI found Knitter Beastie hanging out among the plants in my studio, on the day I was going to meet one of my long-term knitting students for a goodbye coffee. This student had been a regular at the classes for a while, and we’d worked through some awesome and ambitious projects together. But alas, her time in Dublin was coming to an end, and she was moving home to Germany to continue her studies.

Knitter Beastie’s little pointy ears pricked up when I mentioned that I was going to meet a fellow knitter.
Knitter Beastie - Will travel for knitting! CrawCrafts Beasties“Reeeeeally? I’ve always wanted to see Germany… And I could probably use a bit of help with this project, too.”
Knitting Closeup - Knitter Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd with that, it was decided. Knitter Beastie hopped into my bag, and pretty much insisted on leaving the country with my student. I hope they’re getting on well… And that Knitter Beastie hasn’t been raiding all the local yarn shops in the hope of whipping up a few woolly monster friends!

By the way, if you’re in Dublin (either all the time, or passing through), why not join us for class? Full details and a contact form can be found in the Knitting Classes section of the site, here. And I promise there won’t be too many Beasties around to distract you as you work away on your first project… Probably. 😉

So that’s it for this week… Short and sweet! Next week sees the return of Paddy and Plunkett, who are STILL on holiday. Lucky little monsters, eh? Join us on Tuesday to see what they’re up to now!

Personalised Birthday Gift Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties

A Special Beastie for a Special Birthday!

Well hello there, Beastie friends! After Paddy’s totally genuine high-speed adventure last week, we’re shifting down a gear to a more sedate pace, and meeting a new Beastie. Hey, Birthday Girl Beastie!
A Special Birthday Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesThis Beastie was requested by a thoughtful mum, who wanted to help her daughter to celebrate a very special birthday in the Beastie-est way possible. I mean, you don’t turn 10 every day, do you?

So, this was the design brief – a Beastie with long, dark brown hair just like her new human buddy’s…
Beastie Hair - Special Birthday Commission - CrawCrafts BeastiesDone! And we needed to include her favourite colours, too – blue, mint green, white and peach.

I managed to tick most of those boxes with this stripey handknitted sweater…

… Complete with an appliquéd felt “O” for the birthday girl’s initial!

Now, how can we get some peach in there? I know… What about a little felt bag, so she can gather up souvenirs (and, more importantly, birthday cake) on her adventures?
Beastie Bag - Special Birthday Commission - CrawCrafts BeastiesPerfect! I even picked up some rose-gold-coloured jewellery findings to better match the warm peachy tones of the bag and its ribbon strap. Here you go, little Beastie lady!

That looks great! Your outfit is complete.
Beastie with Bag - Special Birthday Commission by CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd now I reckon you’d better get going… You wouldn’t want to miss the party, would you?

So, thanks to Dee for requesting this sweet little girl monster! And if you know someone who’s about to celebrate a special birthday too, why not send a personalised Beastie to help with the festivities?

You can check out past Beastifications in my Gallery, or if you’re ready to start now, drop us a line from the Contact page!

We’ll be back next Tuesday with more Beastie shenanigans, so be sure to join us then!

See you next week!

To DYE for… A Beastie Hairdressing Odyssey

Hello there Beastie friends! I hope you’ve been enjoying travelling around with Paddy and Plunkett these last few weeks – if you’ve missed out you can catch up with their latest antics here, here and here. Don’t worry, we’ll wait for you. All done? Great! Let’s greet a new Beastie, then… It’s been a while, hasn’t it? But this one is dye -ing to meet you too!

Hello there, monster lady!
Hannah's Birthday Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesThis Beastie girl was created as a very special birthday gift… And as you might have guessed from the title and subsequent puns, copying her human counterpart’s supercool hairdo was a really big part of this project! Let’s take a closer look at that colourful barnet, shall we?

Beastie Hair Dye Project - CrawCrafts Beasties

So, we’ve got rich, natural dark brown at the top, multi-tonal blues at the ends… And her hair is curly, too!

Getting this to work really did take a bit of pondering. You see, when humans dye their hair like this, it’s not too tricky. The ends are bleached, dyed in your colour of choice, and then you can enjoy watching the ever-changing tones as the dye gradually fades. Being wool, Beastie hair responds much less positively to the initial bleaching treatment, and that meant I had to start by turning the entire process on its head!

So, I selected a couple of yarns from my stash – one solid blue and one multicoloured hand-dye helped me capture the right array of hues – and set about colouring the “root” ends darker to get the effect I wanted. Since I was only dyeing a very small amount, some sums were involved to make sure I got the reduced quantities of ingredients in the correct proportions. This, and the mixing that followed, had me feeling very much like a mad monster-making scientist!

Then, using highly technical apparatus (consisting of wooden clothes pegs, chopsticks and a repurposed butter tub), I set about dip-dyeing my pre-cut yarn strands. I worked with a colour called Espresso Brown initially, but when two separate dyeing sessions left me with a shade that was more “milk chocolate”, I picked up a sachet of black dye and used it to mix my own custom blend. Phew – third time lucky! I finally had a colour I was happy with, and once everything dried out, I was able to crack on with my usual Beastie hairdressing.

Talk about a learning experience! But it was really cool to take control of my colour selections in this way, and I’d definitely do it again – especially when it comes to trying to match the human hair tones that commercial yarn companies seldom offer in their ranges.

But there’s more to this Beastie than her hairstyle, y’know! To complete her look, I dressed her in black leggings and a black hoodie…
Hair Dye Beastie with Hoodie - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd of course, the hood can be worn up or down. There are even holes for her ears to poke through!
Hoodie with Hood Up - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd… Wait a sec, don’t go!

Aha! She’s just fetching her four-legged friends to join the photoshoot. Hello, Beastie pups!
Beastie With Pugaliers - CrawCrafts BeastiesThese little scamps are Beastie pugaliers – just like the full-size ones that her new human friend has at home!

When I saw photos of the family’s dogs, I noticed that they both had quite distinctive markings. So I used needle felting to make their Mini-Mes as close as possible to the full-size versions! Meet Beastie Lucy…

And now that we’re all here… WALKIES!

A Monster Father’s Day!

Hey there Beastie friends! Sorry about the slight delay in transmission (again!)… It’s been another busy week, and it seems like it’s always my internet time that takes the hit when there’s a deadline to meet! But don’t let this slip fool you – I’m still super excited to welcome another new member of the Beastie family today. Better again, this is kind of a two for one deal…
Father's Day, the Beastie way - CrawCrafts BeastiesHey there, Cool Dad Beastie – and sweet little Baby Girl Beastie too! This charming woolly pair were requested as a super-special Father’s Day gift for a new dad. A very new dad… Father’s Day 2019 was his first! So, to help the festivities go with a trademark Beastie bang, these two little monsters needed to make sure that their human counterparts recognised them straight away.

First of all, let’s talk about that Beastie baby!
Beastie Baby in Sling - Father's Day Commission - CrawCrafts BeastiesHer new human friend is heading for her first birthday, so this Baby Beastie is also a little bigger than some of the Beastie babies you might have met before. She’s also wearing a sweet little bow headband, just like her human does!

And because she’s still so little, Dad is in charge of carrying her around… In this very handy custom-made baby sling. It’s securely held in place by crossover straps at the back…
Baby Sling Straps - Father's Day Beastie gift - CrawCrafts Beasties… And these straps unclip too, making the sling removable!

Handing over the Baby Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesI think it’s time for a hug!
Hug Time! Father's Day Beasties - CrawCrafts Beasties

Side note for those of you interested in Beastie development – Baby Beasties grow arms before they grow legs! This probably explains why Beastie legs are so short and stumpy, even in adults… And it makes Beastie parents extra devoted to their littl’uns during those early years too. Awwwww!

Oh, hang on… What did you say, Dad Beastie? Are you sure… Can I hold her?
Holding Baby Beastie - Father's Day Beasties - CrawCrafts BeastiesHeehee! Look how teeny she is!

And while I hold the baby, let’s get to know Dad Beastie a little better. I’ve copied his human buddy’s awesome beard, and made him a custom-tailored felt t-shirt!
Cool Dad Beastie, A Commission for Father's Day - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd look, he’s into craft beer too! These two new friends will have lots to talk about. Regular BeastieBlog readers will recognise the brand of beer from a birthday commission I did last year… Good news, Beasties everywhere! Your favourite Hop Monster IPA is now available in cans!

And then, it was time to hand Baby Beastie back… These two little monsters had to get on their way, or they’d miss the party!
Father's Day Gift Commission - CrawCrafts BeastiesThanks so much to Deirdre from Olann And magazine for requesting this very special Beastie pair… And I’m sure Deirdre Beastie is happy to have her family complete at last too!

Beastie plus Kitty! CrawCrafts Beasties

A New Beastie… And Kitty!

Greetings, Beastie friends! It’s Tuesday again, and what better way to kick off your week than to spend a little time getting to know a new Beastie? Hello there, little monster… Plus kitty!
Beastie plus Kitty! CrawCrafts Beasties

I’ve noticed a natural affinity between Beasties and cats over the years…
Beasties and Kitties - CrawCrafts BeastiesIs it because of their shared curiosity about the world around them? Or just because they both have pointy ears? Either way, my first Beasties with their own feline friends proved popular at the markets we went to last Christmas.
Christmas on the Square Stall - CrawCrafts Beasties

Skip forward a few months, and I was delighted to receive a picture of this kitty owner Beastie…
Cat Owner Beastie by CrawCrafts Beasties… Enjoying some cosy feline cuddles in their new home!

However, it seems that this Beastie was also craving more monstrous company. And, under the pretext of creating a special gift for my customer’s girlfriend, I set about making a complementary cat-loving Beastie to make this one’s life complete!

Let’s start with the colours – the same as before, but I switched the main colour and the stripes for a nice yin-and-yang effect.
Blue and Orange Stripey Beastie with Kitty by CrawCrafts BeastiesThen, a black cat this time… With bright green eyes!
Black Cat - Needle Felted Kitty - CrawCrafts BeastiesEagle-eyed readers will also notice that the cat is sitting the other way around in the Beastie’s paws… So Orange Beastie and Blue Beastie will make a lovely matching pair when they’re together!

Now, one more picture before I send this woolly duo off to their new home. Big smiles, everybo… GAAAAAAH!
Ophelia Joins the Party - CrawCrafts BeastiesOh, hello Ophelia! No, don’t worry… I wouldn’t dream of doing a photoshoot without including you too.
Beastie Cat, Meet Ophelia - CrawCrafts BeastiesThanks so much to Rosa for this Beastie request… And for giving Ophelia an excuse to drop into the BeastieBlog for the first time in a while!

And to any non-cat-people in the audience – fear not, I’ll have a less feline new Beastie for you next week.

See you then!

Beastie Bruce's Glasses - Beastie Accessories by CrawCrafts Beasties

A Sporty Beastie… With ALL the Accessories!

Eeeeek! Hello there everyone! Sorry I’m a smidge late to the party this week – I’ve taken on a little extra work recently, and unfortunately my blogging time got squeezed out! But I still have a brand new Beastie to share with you today, so how about we kick back on this lazy Sunday morning, and hang out with him and all his accessories?

(As I mentioned way back last week, he has SO MANY accessories!)

Hey there, Mr Beastie!
Bruce Beastie, A Commission by CrawCrafts Beasties

“Mr Beastie” seems very formal though, doesn’t it? Maybe we should get on first name terms. This Beastie started life as a request from one of my lovely knitting students, who wanted to Beastify her husband Bruce as a birthday gift. So I’m guessing that makes this fellow Beastie Bruce!

Human Bruce is an active kind of guy, and every morning he dons his yellow hi-viz vest before he cycles to work. Great, let’s give Beastie Bruce one of those!Beastie Bruce's Hi Viz Vest - CrawCrafts Beasties
As you can see, the felt hi-viz has a stripe of reflective ribbon… And is removable!

Underneath, there’s a Beastified version of Human Bruce’s favourite grey wool coat, complete with buttons.
Beastie Bruce's Wool Coat - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd, in Russian-doll-like fashion, that’s removable too!

What’s he got on under there, then?
Sporting Gear for Beastie Bruce - CrawCrafts BeastiesAha! It’s a blue running top! I chose a colour that matches the shirt Human Bruce got for taking part in the Dublin Marathon… See, I told you he was sporty! His stripey beanie hat is also a marathon souvenir.
Bruce Beastie's Beanie - Beastie Accessories by CrawCrafts Beasties

At this point, I should probably mention that Human Bruce isn’t originally from round these parts. He and his wife Sue have been living in Dublin for the last few years, having moved over from Australia for work commitments. Apparently, he’s become quite interested in the Irish sport of hurling during his time here… So, surprise surprise, Beastie Bruce wants a slice of that action too!

And thanks to his magnetic paws, he can pick up and set down his hurley at will!
Beastie Bruce's Magnetic Paws - CrawCrafts BeastiesGood work, Beastie Bruce! It gives me great pleasure to present you with this special Beastie-sized medal.

Fortunately, he seems to be a gracious winner. Let’s reward him further with… Some more accessories! I reckon he needs something to go in that nice blue backpack.
Bruce Beastie's Backpack - Beastie Accessories by CrawCrafts BeastiesHow about a tasty croissant to snack on? It’s Human Bruce’s favourite way to start the day! This one is made of felted wool – the perfect low-fat, high-fibre treat for a Beastie on the go.
A Beastie-Sized Croissant - CrawCrafts Beasties

And, because reading “The Irish Times” has become a cherished part of Human Bruce’s Dublin routine…
Beastified Irish Times - Beastie Accessories by CrawCrafts BeastiesI think he’s finally good to go!
What's in Beastie Bruce's Backpack? CrawCrafts BeastiesOh, and although he’s been wearing them throughout all the pictures in this post, let’s not forget those glasses! Some careful work with needle and pliers meant that I could capture the thin metal frames of Human Bruce’s specs.
Beastie Bruce's Glasses - Beastie Accessories by CrawCrafts BeastiesPhew! It’s only when I write a post like this that I realise how much goes into each and every Beastification. Still, this was such a fun project. Then seeing Human Bruce sharing pictures of his new monster buddy was the icing on the cake!

By the way, if you have someone in your life who you think merits a full Beastification, all you have to do is drop me a line and we’ll get the process under way!

Alrighty, enjoy the rest of your weekend… Are you being active like Bruce Beastie, or taking it easy? Let us know in the comments! I’ll be back in a week and a bit, hopefully with a slightly clearer schedule… See you then!

Rock Girl Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties

Beasties Rock!

Hey there everyone! It’s a sunny spring Tuesday in Dublin, and I’ve a fresh new Beastie to share with you all! Now, from the title, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this one has a geological theme… But in fact it’s more of a rock ‘n’ roll vibe we’re going for! Hey there, Beastie lady!
Rock Girl Beastie - Commissions by CrawCrafts BeastiesThis Beastie was requested as a very special birthday gift and she needed to match her new buddy’s look as closely as possible. So, that boiled down to a pairing of flashes of bright colour with a few nods to gothic/heavy metal style. No problemo!

I started out with the black hoodie. The hood can be worn up or down…
Beastie Hoodie - CrawCrafts Beasties… And is removable, too. However, after several instances of Beastie nudity on this blog, I’ve decided this little monster is going to stay dressed. We don’t want to be getting a reputation.

The hoodie also features an embroidered zip, just because zip manufacturers haven’t caught on yet to the need for non-human-sized clothing fastenings. Now, it’s normal for me to have at least one “go overboard” moment with every Beastification I take on, and this time around it manifested itself as the quest for fake zip perfection. In the end, I used short stitches with a slight overlap to create the effect of interlocking zip teeth… What do you think?
Embroidered Zip Detail - Rock Girl Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd now that the hoodie hood is down, you will have noticed that this Beastie is rocking some rather spiffy piercings and a cute bob and fringe!
Beastie Jewellery and Hairstyle - CrawCrafts BeastiesI made sure to keep the individual strands of hair quite fine, though – just to make sure her hair wasn’t too big to fit inside her hoodie hood.

Then, I completed her styling with some winged eyeliner and eyelashes. Just tuck your hair behind your ears there, so we can see…
Beastie Makeup - CrawCrafts BeastiesVery nice!

And while her beautiful mustard yellow complexion and turquoise stripes mostly ticked the “splash of colour” box, we decided that a bright pink backpack would complete the look.
Beastie Backpack - Rock Girl Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesAs you can see, it tucks in neatly underneath the hoodie hood, so she can bring it with her come rain or shine!

Then, she’ll definitely need something to go inside that backpack, right? Here you go!
Cookie Time! CrawCrafts BeastiesBeastification complete… Rock on!
Rock Girl Beastie, Ready to Go! CrawCrafts BeastiesMany thanks to Caspar for this awesome Beastie project… And to all of you for dropping in to visit! Paddy and Plunkett will be back next Tuesday, so be sure to join us then.

Enjoy your week!

How Explorer Beastie Got His Groove Back

Hi there Beastie friends! As you can see, I’m getting back to my usual blogging routine – hopefully Tuesday posts will once again be the norm after a couple of disrupted weeks!

Now, at the end of Sunday’s post, I mentioned Explorer Beastie’s beauty regime. You might be surprised that he even has one – perhaps you pictured him as a more rough-and-tumble kind of guy.
Explorer Beastie Takes a Tumble - CrawCrafts BeastiesI can’t imagine why that might be.

Anyway, for the last little while, he’s been feeling a bit… Flat. Life hadn’t literally knocked the stuffing out of him, but his adventurous ways were taking a toll on his insides, and he’d lost the winsome plumpness of his early years.
Beasties Age Too - CrawCrafts BeastiesPoor Explorer Beastie!

Fortunately, monster-making skills aren’t just good for creating new Beastie friends. They can also be applied to help cure serious Beastie medical conditions! And so, I formulated a surgical strategy…

Surgery Plans - CrawCrafts Beasties
Like all reputable surgeons, I sketched out my plan on the back of an envelope first.

…Then I performed my first ever stuffing transplant!

Afterwards, to help him during his recovery, I treated Explorer Beastie to a spa day. You know, to help restore his youthful vitality.

Now, Beastie beauty products are a little different to what we humans use…

Beastie Bubble Bath - CrawCrafts Beasties“Aaaaah! We should do this every week!”
Relaxing in the Bubbles - CrawCrafts BeastiesWhiter teeth and a nice clean beanie hat were just an added bonus!

Then, it was time to snuggle up in a big cosy towel and dry off.

Beastie Shenanigans Ahoy! - CrawCrafts BeastiesBeastie Hospital services are available to all Beasties, too! You only need to reach into your pocket to pay postage back to Beastie Towers – we’ll take care of the rest. Contact me here to make an appointment!

Finally, before I go – thanks to Melissa for sharing this pic of Cookie Beastie on Twitter last week – ain’t she a cutie?

Feline the Beastie Love!

Hello everybody! I’m a little later on my blogging than usual this week… But I promised you a new Beastie, and here she is!
JuliaMusings Beastie with Kitty - CrawCrafts BeastiesMeet Julia Beastie! This particular monster lady was made as a very special “Yay, you finished your MA thesis” gift… And as you can see, she’s not travelling alone. She’s being kept company by her feline felt friend, Paddy the cat!

Let’s take a closer look at him, shall we?
Paddy the Beastie Cat - CrawCrafts BeastiesNow, Beasties with pet cats aren’t new – you may remember that I made a few for the Dublin Cat Fair, back in November.
Cat Owner Beastie by CrawCrafts BeastiesHowever, this was the first time I had attempted to copy a particular cat’s markings. Since this Beastie’s human counterpart is the proud owner of a devilishly handsome polydactyl cat, it only seemed right that Felt Paddy paid proper tribute to Real Paddy.

Fortunately, the wonders of needle felting allowed me to add tiger stripes to his coat, and give him a white nose, bib and paws!

Now, on to the Beastie herself! I love her lustrous alpaca locks…
Julia Beastie's Hair - Commission by CrawCrafts Beasties… And the combination of delicate green skin with rich dusky rose stripes!

Next, I believe I promised you a few accessories? I thought a book might keep her entertained as she travelled to her new home…
Penguin Classics, Beastie Style - CrawCrafts BeastiesAaah, you can’t beat those classics! Although I adjusted this Anne Brontë novel (a favourite of Human Julia’s, I hear) sliiiightly to make it suitable for a Beastie audience.

Then, since Human Julia has already made a name for herself as a theatre reviewer, Julia Beastie had to have a notebook and pen for her own note-taking and reviewing activities.
Theatre Notebook and Pen - Beastie Accessories by CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd how about a ticket to a show, to complete the set?
Carousel Theatre Ticket - CrawCrafts Beasties“Carousel” is one of Human Julia’s favourites, so it’s fairly safe to assume that her new Beastie companion will enjoy it too. Just one thing, though…

“My paws are a bit full at the minute – maybe you could take all that cool stuff…”
Everything a theatre-loving Beastie needs! CrawCrafts Beasties“… And pop it in my backpack for me?”
Packing the Beastie Backpack - CrawCrafts Beasties
“Cheers!”

And the good news for Beastie Paddy (who looks so comfortable cuddled up in Julia Beastie’s arms) is that he can stay exactly where he is while the backpack goes on!
Beastie Backpack - CrawCrafts BeastiesAs you can see, the straps clip into place at the base of the bag. That means they can simply be slipped around a Beastie arm and attached!
Beastie Backpack in Place - CrawCrafts BeastiesPerfect!

And better still… Here’s the pair of them meeting Paddy for the first time!
Julia Beastie at Home - CrawCrafts BeastiesHere’s wishing them all kinds of monster adventures together!

So, thanks for joining us for this latest Beastification… I should have a monster adventure of my own to share with you next week, so be sure to swing by! Catch you then!

Paddy Plunkett Daffodils - Spring Break - CrawCrafts Beasties

Springing Back into Action!

Hey look! I’M BACK!

Paddy Plunkett Daffodils - Spring Break - CrawCrafts BeastiesNo, I haven’t been hiding out in the daffodil patch with Paddy and Plunkett for the last month… Although I bet that would be a party!

I’ve been keeping busy with knitting classes, plus a little non-Beastie-based work. It’s always a good idea to keep food on the table, and yarn in the stash! I’ve also been spending a heap of time in my new studio, where Ophelia is making sure I don’t slack off.
Ophelia - Studio Kitty - CrawCrafts BeastiesSince we last spoke, I’ve been gradually moving more of my crafting kit out of Beastie Towers and into the studio… One blue IKEA bag at a time! Honestly, what did craftspeople use to transport their gear around before?! I’ve also picked up a few things to make my little workspace a bit more “Beastie”, and I’ll be sure to give you the new and improved photo tour in a future post.

So, what’s coming up over the next couple of weeks? Well, I’ve some new Beasties to share…
New Beasties - Commissions 2019 - CrawCrafts Beasties…Plus a couple to finish up and add to my online store (AT LAST)!

And once the April showers ease off a little, I know I won’t be able to stop certain little monsters from hitting the road! Expect to see Explorer Beastie and Paddy and Plunkett setting out to seek adventure again soon.
Tree Blossom - Paddy and Plunkett - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd what about you? What have you been up to since we last saw each other? Be sure to tell us all your latest news in the comments!

We’ll be back next week with a new Beastie for you all to meet. Get ready… She has so many accessories!

See you then!
