Woof! Or, Another Visit to the Beastie Pet Shop

Hello everyone! I’ve another creature feature for you this week – and I’m surprised at how long it’s taken me to share this special Beastie pet with you! She’s a real cutie.

Hey there, Mini-Penelope!

Mini Penelope - Teeny needle-felted dog by CrawCrafts Beasties

This sweet little French bulldog pup was created to complete a Beastie family which I made a few years ago. Here’s the original trio…

Who's This? A Beastie Family, by CrawCrafts Beasties

They landed in their new home just in time to help their new human friends celebrate their wedding. However, that was ALLLLLL the way back in 2018! And with the arrival of Penelope (a cheeky lil’ French bulldog puppy) during last year’s lockdown, this family portrait needed an update!

So, I grabbed my needle-felting kit, and spent a good bit of time getting to know Penelope a little better. You can too! She and her sister Zoey have their own Instagram account.

And now here’s her Mini-Me!

A Cool Mama Beastie Commission, by CrawCrafts Beasties

When the Woolly Work is Done…

… It’s time to relax and unwind, and spend a little more time doing the things YOU want to do.

So when I was asked to create a very special retirement gift for a longtime Beastie follower to give to her mum, I wanted to make sure her monster counterpart had plenty of fun accessories. That way she can indulge in all her favourite activities, now that she has time to enjoy herself!

Let’s meet her, shall we? Hello there!
Cool Mama Beastie in Aran Sweater - CrawCrafts BeastiesFirst of all, you can see she’s sporting a very lovely handknitted Aran sweater. This Beastie’s human counterpart loves to travel… And although she’s been to some pretty far-flung destinations, the Aran Islands (which lie just off Ireland’s west coast) remain one of her favourite places to visit. What better way for a Beastie to celebrate this connection than with knitwear?

I also copied her new human friend’s hairstyle as closely as possible. Check out those lustrous chestnut locks, made from lovely soft alpaca yarn!
Alpaca Hair and Aran Sweater - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd now, how about something to tie into her working life? For a time, our Beastification subject worked for St Patrick’s Athletic Football Club – a Dublin team based in Inchicore, just to the west of the city centre. She’s also the head of a family of self-confessed football addicts… That made this a prime candidate for being included in the accessory lineup!

So I cracked out the magnifying lamp and got to work on a Beastie-sized supporters’ scarf in the team’s colours, complete with teeny hand-embroidered club crest!

Outside of work, this lady’s biggest passion is cooking. I did consider creating a full four-course meal in felt as a tribute to her culinary prowess, but in the end we settled on something more portable… A bag embroidered with the logo of her favourite local butcher!
Hand-embroidered Lawlor's Butchers Bag - CrawCrafts BeastiesWhen it’s not holding the ingredients for her latest gastronomic experiments, she can use it to carry everything she needs for her other favourite pastime – getting lost in a good book!
Books and Tote Bag - CrawCrafts BeastiesAs you can see, I’ve provided her with a selection of Beastie-appropriate titles – The Monster Family Cookbook and a classic Hercwool Poirot crime thriller!

So, let’s get everything all packed up…
All the Accessories - Commissions - CrawCrafts Beasties… And let the good times roll!
Ready for Retirement! CrawCrafts BeastiesThanks to Niamh for choosing to celebrate her Mum’s retirement the Beastie way… And for all her help in getting the blend of accessories just right!

We’ll be back next week with the last of Explorer Beastie’s London adventures, so be sure to join us then!

Beastie Wedding Couple, by CrawCrafts Beasties

Monster Cheers to the Happy Couple!

Greetings, Beastie friends! And hooray, after a bit of a break, it’s new Beastie time again! Those of you who follow me over on Instagram might already have caught a glimpse of this handsome couple last week…

//www.instagram.com/embed.js… But I thought it was high time they got their moment in the blog spotlight. Hey there, guys!
Meet the Beastie Couple! CrawCrafts BeastiesNow, I don’t mind admitting that this was a pretty big project. All Beastifications are important, of course, but it was hinted that this pair would be joining the wedding party on the day. They’d be given the monster task of looking after (not eating!) the wedding cake, and the ceremony and reception were to take place in the oh-so-fancy Merchant Hotel in Belfast.

In short, these Beasties needed to look swish!

Fortunately, their human counterparts were on hand to narrow down my sartorial options. Armed with a photo of the very classy matching tuxedo jackets they were planning to wear for the reception dinner, I was able to get to work!

Here’s Mr D Beastie now, modelling his to great effect.
Wedding Beastie Jacket - CrawCrafts BeastiesThe jackets close with a snap fastener, and are completely removable. Underneath, a shirt with felt collar and cuffs completes the look… Then a black ribbon bow tie adds a final flourish. Here’s Mr P Beastie to give us a close-up!
Wedding Beastie Shirt and Bow Tie - CrawCrafts BeastiesLet’s just take another look at those jackets… First of all, they’re fully lined!
Beastie Couple Wedding Jackets - CrawCrafts BeastiesI used a lighter weight wool and viscose blend felt for this, to make sure the jackets kept their lines and didn’t end up looking like bulky winter coats. They’ve got black satin collars, and…
Jacket Cuff Buttons - Wedding Couple Beasties - CrawCrafts Beasties… I even copied the cuff buttons from the human-sized version!

Then it was time to get the couple looking like their people, by fitting them out with the right glasses and haircuts…
Wedding Beastie Style! CrawCrafts Beasties… And then sending them down the aisle with a special accessory each!

Mr P Beastie is big into music, so a felt appliqué and embroidery record was the obvious choice. Spot the pun band name!

So, let’s raise a glass to the woolly couple – here’s wishing you a long and happy life together.

Knitting Up A Monster Storm!

Hello there Beastie friends! It’s just a quick post from me today, but I realised that I have the perfect new Beastie to introduce to you. Stick around, it’ll only take a sec! Hey there, Knitter Beastie!
Knitter Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesI found Knitter Beastie hanging out among the plants in my studio, on the day I was going to meet one of my long-term knitting students for a goodbye coffee. This student had been a regular at the classes for a while, and we’d worked through some awesome and ambitious projects together. But alas, her time in Dublin was coming to an end, and she was moving home to Germany to continue her studies.

Knitter Beastie’s little pointy ears pricked up when I mentioned that I was going to meet a fellow knitter.
Knitter Beastie - Will travel for knitting! CrawCrafts Beasties“Reeeeeally? I’ve always wanted to see Germany… And I could probably use a bit of help with this project, too.”
Knitting Closeup - Knitter Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd with that, it was decided. Knitter Beastie hopped into my bag, and pretty much insisted on leaving the country with my student. I hope they’re getting on well… And that Knitter Beastie hasn’t been raiding all the local yarn shops in the hope of whipping up a few woolly monster friends!

By the way, if you’re in Dublin (either all the time, or passing through), why not join us for class? Full details and a contact form can be found in the Knitting Classes section of the site, here. And I promise there won’t be too many Beasties around to distract you as you work away on your first project… Probably. 😉

So that’s it for this week… Short and sweet! Next week sees the return of Paddy and Plunkett, who are STILL on holiday. Lucky little monsters, eh? Join us on Tuesday to see what they’re up to now!

To DYE for… A Beastie Hairdressing Odyssey

Hello there Beastie friends! I hope you’ve been enjoying travelling around with Paddy and Plunkett these last few weeks – if you’ve missed out you can catch up with their latest antics here, here and here. Don’t worry, we’ll wait for you. All done? Great! Let’s greet a new Beastie, then… It’s been a while, hasn’t it? But this one is dye -ing to meet you too!

Hello there, monster lady!
Hannah's Birthday Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesThis Beastie girl was created as a very special birthday gift… And as you might have guessed from the title and subsequent puns, copying her human counterpart’s supercool hairdo was a really big part of this project! Let’s take a closer look at that colourful barnet, shall we?

Beastie Hair Dye Project - CrawCrafts Beasties

So, we’ve got rich, natural dark brown at the top, multi-tonal blues at the ends… And her hair is curly, too!

Getting this to work really did take a bit of pondering. You see, when humans dye their hair like this, it’s not too tricky. The ends are bleached, dyed in your colour of choice, and then you can enjoy watching the ever-changing tones as the dye gradually fades. Being wool, Beastie hair responds much less positively to the initial bleaching treatment, and that meant I had to start by turning the entire process on its head!

So, I selected a couple of yarns from my stash – one solid blue and one multicoloured hand-dye helped me capture the right array of hues – and set about colouring the “root” ends darker to get the effect I wanted. Since I was only dyeing a very small amount, some sums were involved to make sure I got the reduced quantities of ingredients in the correct proportions. This, and the mixing that followed, had me feeling very much like a mad monster-making scientist!

Then, using highly technical apparatus (consisting of wooden clothes pegs, chopsticks and a repurposed butter tub), I set about dip-dyeing my pre-cut yarn strands. I worked with a colour called Espresso Brown initially, but when two separate dyeing sessions left me with a shade that was more “milk chocolate”, I picked up a sachet of black dye and used it to mix my own custom blend. Phew – third time lucky! I finally had a colour I was happy with, and once everything dried out, I was able to crack on with my usual Beastie hairdressing.

Talk about a learning experience! But it was really cool to take control of my colour selections in this way, and I’d definitely do it again – especially when it comes to trying to match the human hair tones that commercial yarn companies seldom offer in their ranges.

But there’s more to this Beastie than her hairstyle, y’know! To complete her look, I dressed her in black leggings and a black hoodie…
Hair Dye Beastie with Hoodie - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd of course, the hood can be worn up or down. There are even holes for her ears to poke through!
Hoodie with Hood Up - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd… Wait a sec, don’t go!

Aha! She’s just fetching her four-legged friends to join the photoshoot. Hello, Beastie pups!
Beastie With Pugaliers - CrawCrafts BeastiesThese little scamps are Beastie pugaliers – just like the full-size ones that her new human friend has at home!

When I saw photos of the family’s dogs, I noticed that they both had quite distinctive markings. So I used needle felting to make their Mini-Mes as close as possible to the full-size versions! Meet Beastie Lucy…

Beastie plus Kitty! CrawCrafts Beasties

A New Beastie… And Kitty!

Greetings, Beastie friends! It’s Tuesday again, and what better way to kick off your week than to spend a little time getting to know a new Beastie? Hello there, little monster… Plus kitty!
Beastie plus Kitty! CrawCrafts Beasties

I’ve noticed a natural affinity between Beasties and cats over the years…
Beasties and Kitties - CrawCrafts BeastiesIs it because of their shared curiosity about the world around them? Or just because they both have pointy ears? Either way, my first Beasties with their own feline friends proved popular at the markets we went to last Christmas.
Christmas on the Square Stall - CrawCrafts Beasties

Skip forward a few months, and I was delighted to receive a picture of this kitty owner Beastie…
Cat Owner Beastie by CrawCrafts Beasties… Enjoying some cosy feline cuddles in their new home!

However, it seems that this Beastie was also craving more monstrous company. And, under the pretext of creating a special gift for my customer’s girlfriend, I set about making a complementary cat-loving Beastie to make this one’s life complete!

Let’s start with the colours – the same as before, but I switched the main colour and the stripes for a nice yin-and-yang effect.
Blue and Orange Stripey Beastie with Kitty by CrawCrafts BeastiesThen, a black cat this time… With bright green eyes!
Black Cat - Needle Felted Kitty - CrawCrafts BeastiesEagle-eyed readers will also notice that the cat is sitting the other way around in the Beastie’s paws… So Orange Beastie and Blue Beastie will make a lovely matching pair when they’re together!

Now, one more picture before I send this woolly duo off to their new home. Big smiles, everybo… GAAAAAAH!
Ophelia Joins the Party - CrawCrafts BeastiesOh, hello Ophelia! No, don’t worry… I wouldn’t dream of doing a photoshoot without including you too.
Beastie Cat, Meet Ophelia - CrawCrafts BeastiesThanks so much to Rosa for this Beastie request… And for giving Ophelia an excuse to drop into the BeastieBlog for the first time in a while!

And to any non-cat-people in the audience – fear not, I’ll have a less feline new Beastie for you next week.

See you then!

Rugby Beastie, Ready to Play - CrawCrafts Beasties

A Rugby Star is Born!

Happy Tuesday, everyone! And today I have a real monster treat for you all… The first new Beastie of 2019! Here he is – a brand new Rugby Beastie!
Rugby Beastie by CrawCrafts BeastiesIt’s been a while since I made a Rugby Beastie – you can check out past members of Team Beastie here and here – but they’re always a fun challenge.

For starters, I usually make them a little taller than regular Beasties. Human rugby players often stand a few inches above the rest of us, so it only seems right!
Rugby Beastie, Standing Tall - CrawCrafts BeastiesSo, in knitting terms, this guy is rocking an extra row on his torso, and a couple of extra rows to lengthen his legs!

And now, he needs some kit! This Rugby Beastie was requested by a lovely lady who met me at one of my markets before Christmas. She wanted a gift for her son… A lucky monster mascot to cheer him on from the sidelines at a very important match that would be taking place at the end of January.

So, it made sense to dress him in the team’s colours. That’s a deep blue rugby shirt with white collar and trim, completed with an appliquéd and embroidered star motif.
Rugby Beastie's Rugby Shirt - CrawCrafts Beasties

He’ll also need a ball, or we won’t be able to play! As with many previous Rugby Beasties (and even rugby supporter Beasties) he’s carrying a Beastified version of the official Ireland rugby ball.

And finally… Check out that hair!
Super-soft Red Beastie Hair - CrawCrafts BeastiesThe colour is inspired by his human counterpart, and the yarn I used was a luxurious blend of alpaca and wool. You’ll have to take my word for it, but it’s unbelievably soft.

Now, I reckon you’re ready to hit the pitch!
Rugby Beastie, Ready to Play - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd hopefully he worked a little monster magic for his teammates, too!

Join us again next Tuesday, when Paddy and Plunkett are off to Belfast to check out one of the city’s most popular attractions. See you then… And have a monster week in the meantime!

A Busy Beastie… And Her Best Friend!

Hello everybody, and welcome to the first proper BeastieBlog post of 2018! I hope you all got a bit of a break over the holidays – I know I certainly took advantage of the end-of-year lull to catch up on some sleep! But it’s great to be back, and right now is actually one of my favourite times of year. Yes, really! Because NOW I can finally start sharing my Christmas commissions with you all!

It was tricky to choose which of my latest Beasties I’d introduce you to first… But in the end, the honour has gone to this little monster lady!
Translator Beastie, with her Accessories - CrawCrafts Beasties
At a time of year when many of us are resolving to make changes in our lives or try new things, I thought that this multitalented Beastie might provide a little inspiration. She was created as a special companion for a lady who works as a translator, so she speaks a couple of languages…
Translator Beastie's French and German Dictionaries - CrawCrafts Beasties
…And she’s also interested in art history, so she never leaves home without a handy sketchpad and pen! You just don’t know when inspiration will strike.
Beastie-Size Sketchbook and Pen - CrawCrafts Beasties
Of course, she’d never get anything done if she had to carry all this stuff around in her paws. So I made her a cool satchel-style bag to put everything into!

Perfect! She certainly looks happy… But what’s that I hear?
A Contented Beastie - CrawCrafts Beasties
Aha! Beastie’s best friend… A sweet little felt pooch to keep her company while she works.
A Canine Companion for our Beastie - CrawCrafts Beasties
Because this Beastie was going to live in Germany, I modelled her four-legged friend on traditional German breeds, like the German pinscher and Jagterrier. Hello there, pup!

I think it might be time for walkies… What do you reckon?

And of course, there’s always time for hugs and treats!

We’ll be back next week, when I’ll be sharing snaps of my biggest ever custom order! See you then!

Cyclist Beastie, with Helmet - CrawCrafts Beasties

A Freewheelin’ New Beastie!

It’s been a while since we last met a new Beastie, hasn’t it?

Let’s fix that right now!

I wonder who this laid-back woolly dude is?Who's That Beastie? CrawCrafts BeastiesAha! It’s Cyclist Beastie! Here, I’ll see if I can get him to take off those wraparound shades so he can say hello properly.
Cyclist Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties
Much better! As you can see, this handsome fellow is all ready for a day in the saddle – he’s wearing a zip-up racing top (that coincidentally matches the one his new human cycling buddy wears) and he has a tasty snack on hand for whenever his energy levels start to dip.
Cyclist Beastie's Energy Bar - CrawCrafts BeastiesBut wait a sec… Aren’t you forgetting something, Cyclist Beastie?
Cyclist Beastie's Helmet, by CrawCrafts Beasties
That’s more like it!
Cyclist Beastie, in proper cycling kit! CrawCrafts BeastiesCyclist Beastie’s helmet is built to be sturdy and comfortable – the padding protecting his head is needle felted into place, to ensure an excellent snug fit! That said, I did have to leave a little gap to ensure that he could still wear his sunglasses too when he’s biking on sunny summer days!
Cyclist Beastie's Shades and Helmet, by CrawCrafts BeastiesI reckon he’s just about ready to mount up and hit the road!
Cyclist Beastie, all dressed up and ready to go! CrawCrafts Beasties(Although hopefully not literally – let’s hope he learns from his new family, rather than taking too strongly after his maker!)

Are there any other keen cyclists out there? Or are you more of a disaster on two wheels (like me)? Let us know in the comments!

We’ll be back next week with more monster shenanigans… It will be Hallowe’en, after all! Have a spook-tacular week, everybody!
