Spooky Scary FrankenBeastie - CrawCrafts Beasties

A Spooky Little Beastie Like You!

Hello there Beastie people! I hope you’re all keeping well, wherever you are, and that the lockdown isn’t giving you cabin fever just yet. I’m using the time to get caught up on commissions that have been in progress for a while – and that made me realise that I hadn’t introduced you lot to this spooky little fellow!
Frankenstein's Monster Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesHey there, FrankenBeastie!

I should point out that FrankenBeastie is short for “Frankenstein’s Monster Beastie”… Because, as we all know, Frankenstein was the creator of the monster, not the monster himself.

I’ve made a couple of these before – you can check out an earlier version here – but I think this marled olive green yarn gives a little something extra to his complexion that the plain green was lacking. Here, take a closer look!
FrankenBeastie's Lovely Green Face - CrawCrafts BeastiesWoooooooo! SCARY!

I preserved some classic FrankenBeastie features too – gruesome black lips, felt electrodes and a few extra embroidered stitches here and there, to keep body and soul together.

I also always picture the classic monster from the book as having stiff black hair, a bit like toothbrush bristles. So that’s what FrankenBeastie’s rocking here. It’s made from wool and alpaca yarn, meaning it’s actually lovely and soft – but hopefully you’ll keep that little fact to yourself. If the other Beasties find out, it’ll ruin his spooky street cred.
Hair and Bolts - Spooky FrankenBeastie! CrawCrafts BeastiesFinally, I dressed him in a ragged-edged shirt and faded charcoal trousers.

Then he was ready to head out into the night!
Bringing Spooky Back - CrawCrafts BeastiesLet me know if you bump into him when you’re out for your daily half hour of exercise!

Also, I have had a couple of people ask me over the past week if I’m still doing commissions. Let me assure you all that as long as there is yarn in my stash*, there will be Beasties! So if you think a monster friend might brighten up your days, get in touch and let’s talk monsters!

Until next week… Stay safe and keep washing those paws!

*And believe me, there is A LOT of yarn in my stash.

Monster Market Day – Hallowe’en Edition!

Hallowe’en may be over for another year, but I couldn’t let it pass without sharing my special seasonal market setup with you all! On Sunday I did my first ever Hallowe’en market, and since I brought along some Hallowe’en-y monsters…
A Bevy of Hallowe'en Beasties, by CrawCrafts Beasties… It only seemed fair to modify my props to make them feel more at home! So I strayed outside my usual crafting comfort zone, and had a bit of fun with papier mâché and paint instead. Can you tell what I’m making from this in-progress shot?

As well as a 3D gravestone, I made some simpler flat ones and a two miniature ones. As it happened, I found perfect headstone-shaped photo frames in Tiger, which cut down on my making time a lot!

So, after covering myself in glue, doing my best Banksy impression in the basement of Beastie Towers and a heart-stopping moment where it seemed like my painted details weren’t drying at all, it was time to set up!

TA-DAAAAAAH!
Monster Market Day! CrawCrafts BeastiesOther new additions to the table included some spiderweb fabric, to add a bit of a spookier feel to my cheery bright red tablecloth, and I made some creepy flickering lanterns using LED nightlights and black tissue. It was also nice to have some fixtures to hang my banner from – I don’t always get to use it!

And the Beasties seemed happy enough with the changes too…
Market Stall Closeup - CrawCrafts Beasties…Although on reflection, it might have had something to do with this.
Pint Beastie, on the Tear - CrawCrafts BeastiesOh Pint Beastie, you know it’s not a good idea to mix your drinks!

At least it meant that everyone slept soundly on the journey home… Hopefully the sore heads will be a distant memory by the time our next market rolls around! We’ll next be popping up at the Creative Collective Annual Fair in Ranelagh, on the 12th and 13th of November – save the date!

I hope you all had fun this Hallowe’en! We’ll be back on Friday with an update from Paddy and Plunkett. Yes, they’ve been on holiday again! I’ll really have to get them to take me along next time… See you then!

It's Dracula Beastie! CrawCrafts Beasties

Beasties That Go Bump in the Night…

Who's That Beastie? CrawCrafts BeastiesWooooooo! Hallowe’en weekend is finally here, and there are spooky Beasties about! Welcome to a special late-night edition of the BeastieBlog… Now, who’s that shadowy caped figure lurking up there?
Dracula Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesIt’s Dracula Beastie! And he’s really dressed to kill, in full evening dress and a red satin-lined cape…
Dracula Beastie's Outfit, by CrawCrafts BeastiesBut don’t worry, he doesn’t bite. In fact, why don’t we join him in the library? It might be late, but he’s expecting friends…
Dracula Beastie's Library - CrawCrafts BeastiesOh look, here they are!
Dracula Beastie and Friends - CrawCrafts BeastiesHey there, Jack O’Lantern Beastie and Skull Beastie!
Skull Beastie and Jack O'Lantern Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd now they’re ready to head out trick-or-treating! Hopefully they’ll be back in time to join me at my next market… If you happen to find yourself in Dublin this Sunday, be sure to join us at the Smithfield Market Fair from 12-7pm! It’s going to be spooktacular!

What are you all up to for Hallowe’en? And what will you be dressing up as? Let us know in the comments!

A Fitting Backdrop for a Grim Reaper Beastie! N Depping/CrawCrafts Beasties

Grim Reaper Beastie Gets Away From It All

Hey there everybody!

It’s been a while since I last received word from a globetrotting Beastie, so you can probably imagine how delighted I was when Grim Reaper Beastie got in touch earlier this week! As it happens, he’s been to Hawaii… but of course he had very little interest in going to a luau or hanging out on the beach in a brightly-coloured shirt (hilarious as that would be). I think you’ll agree that he looks much more in his element here…
A Fitting Backdrop for a Grim Reaper Beastie! N Depping/CrawCrafts Beasties… Because as we all know, the Hawaiian islands are a (literal!) hotbed of volcanic activity. And it seems that Grim Reaper Beastie is quite the amateur volcanologist – here he is again, scrambling around among the lava fields around Kilauea on Big Island!
Grim Reaper Beastie in Hawaii - N Depping/CrawCrafts BeastiesI think he looks right at home here, don’t you? However, not all of the rocks were suitable for such up-close inspection… For starters, there’s quite a lot of red hot liquid lava around.
Lava at Kilauea, Hawaii - N Depping/CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd if you think that’s awesome, you should see it after dark!
Lava in the Dark - N Depping/CrawCrafts BeastiesIt also helps to get a bird’s eye view… If you look really closely in the bottom third of this photo, you can see a few fine orange specks where the lava is meeting the sea – and the clouds of steam this produces!
Where the Volcano Meets the Sea - N Depping/CrawCrafts BeastiesFortunately, the lava around here moves pretty slowly, so Grim Reaper Beastie could watch it bubble up from the centre of the earth without having to worry about getting his toes burnt. Here, have a look for yourself!

Can anyone else see a monster face appearing in the hot lava towards the end of the video, or is that just me?!

But not every volcano in this area of Big Island is active. Grim Reaper Beastie finished up his tour at Devastation Trail, which was last affected by the eruption of Kilauea Iki in 1959. Here, shrubs and flowering plants have gradually started to recolonise this stark landscape of stones and cinders!
Grim Reaper Beastie at Devastation Trail - N Depping/CrawCrafts BeastiesA perfect end to a perfect day of exploration!

Thanks to Nicole for letting Grim Reaper Beastie stow away in her suitcase, and for sending me his holiday snaps – it looks like you had a super trip! And be sure to join us again on Tuesday to meet some new Beasties, then next Friday we’ll be sharing more Beastie adventures abroad! See you then!

She Ain’t Scary… She’s My Beastie!

Wooooooooo!
Ghostie Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesHallowe’en fever continues to ramp up here in Beastie Towers, with the arrival of another spooky Beastie! Look who flew in through the window earlier, giving me the fright of my life – it’s Ghostie Beastie!
I Caught A Ghost! CrawCrafts BeastiesAlthough she’s a little less colourful than the other Beasties, she makes up for it by being surrounded by a haze of netting ectoplasm, which I presume is what helps her to fly.
Ectoplasm! Ghost Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesFortunately, I was able to manoeuvre her towards a darker background to allow you all to see her a little better…
Same Beastie, Different Background! CrawCrafts Beasties…And unlike most of her phantom friends, she seemed perfectly happy to pose for more photos!
Ghostie Beastie Smiles for the Camera - CrawCrafts BeastiesSo there you have it – concrete proof that ghosts exist! And, reassuringly, that they are woolly and cuddly!

Do you believe in ghosts? Let us know in the comments!

Aaaand … Not content with giving us a feature in the “Handmade in Ireland” section of their latest issue, the awesome ladies at Olann And also gave me and the Beasties the nicest shoutout on their recent podcast! I’m so glad I finally found a quiet moment to sit down and watch it all – it’s like having a couple of friends over for tea and a chat. I’d definitely recommend giving it a watch, especially if you enjoy the craftier, yarnier things in life!

Who sewed this guy together? CrawCrafts Beasties

Hallowe’en Is Coming…

…And this year, I’ve actually had a chance to start getting under way with some seasonal special edition Beasties! Today, I’m excited to introduce you to my first “Famous Monsters” Beastie – Frankenbeastie!
Frankenbeastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesCobbled together from discontinued dyelots and abandoned WIPs, this little monster hasn’t enjoyed the same precise stitching as some of my other creations…
Who sewed this guy together? CrawCrafts Beasties… And the tailoring of his outfit leaves a lot to be desired as well.
Frankenbeastie, a Sartorial Disaster - CrawCrafts BeastiesBut it’s fine, because I’ve equipped him with this season’s must-have accessory – a pair of electrodes in his neck!
Frankenbeastie's Electrodes, by CrawCrafts BeastiesNow those will surely add a little extra spark to his personality!

So, what’s the verdict – a thing that should not be, or a misunderstood creature who makes us question what it means to be a Beastie? Let me know in the comments!

And as if that wasn’t enough excitement for one week, I made some time over the weekend to peruse the latest issue of online crafty magazine Olann And. Look who made a special guest appearance in their Handmade in Ireland feature!
Knitter Barróg Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesYou can read the full feature here – Knitter Beastie was delighted to be included in the lineup alongside so many other great Irish handmade goodies! There’s also a new edition of the Olann And Podcast up on YouTube, which I’m looking forward to checking out on my next day off. If you want to beat me to it, you can find it here… But no spoilers, please!

We’ll be back on Friday with another blast from the Beastie past – in the meantime, have a great week!

David Bowie Beastie, A Special Commission by CrawCrafts Beasties

Scary Monsters (And Super Beasts)

Loyal Beastie spotters will already have seen this picture on our Instagram yesterday, but in case you missed it here’s a clue to the identity of the new Beastie you’ll be meeting today…

And here’s how he turned out – meet David Bowie Beastie!
David Bowie Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesOr should that be Beastie Stardust? Either way, I had fun playing makeup artist to a real life monster rock star! The famous “stripe” is mainly felt appliqué, but with the finest lines embroidered in black cotton…
Beastie Ziggy Stardust Stripe - CrawCrafts Beasties…Then I picked some chunky merino yarn to recreate his signature brilliant red feathered hairdo!
David Bowie Beastie's Hair - CrawCrafts BeastiesSince this Beastie is going to live with a human mum and her recently-arrived little one, we decided to keep his accessories to a minimum – just in case he ends up babysitting! Even so, I thought I could add a touch of glam rock style to his jumpsuit by using a shiny cotton and viscose yarn, and popping on some over-the-top satin shoulder pads…
Glitzy Costume Details for Beastie Stardust - CrawCrafts BeastiesThanks to Tracy for requesting this very special Beastie as a gift for her friend! The idea had been stewing in my brain for a while, and it was great to finally have an excuse to make it a reality.

Here’s wishing you all a monster week, and don’t forget to share your favourite David Bowie song with us in the comments!

Doctor Who Beastie's Braces and Bow Tie, by CrawCrafts Beasties

The Doctor Will See You Now…

Doctor Who Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties
If it’s Tuesday, it must be… NEW BEASTIE DAY!

And, nearly halfway into February, we’re finally meeting the last of the pre-Christmas Beasties. Let’s have a monster welcome for… Doctor Who Beastie!

This little woolly Time Lord’s outfit is inspired by the 11th Doctor, played by Matt Smith in series 5-7 of the long-running BBC science fiction show “Doctor Who”. As you can see, he’s really made the character’s trademark hairstyle and dapper tweed jacket (complete with felt elbow patches) his own!

And underneath the jacket, he’s sporting an elegant red bow tie and matching braces!

Then, to help him fight intergalactic nasties across space and time, I equipped him with a felt Sonic Screwdriver…

…And a custom-built, Beastie-sized Tardis!

I hope you can see enough of the details in the photos… Unfortunately daylight waThe Tardis, Finished Just in Time! CrawCrafts Beastiess in short supply in these parts around Christmas time!

The box has a little felt lamp on its roof, hand-appliquéd panels and embroidered windows on all four sides, and the all important “Police Box” sign hand-embroidered above the door!

With so many details to complete, it was a real race to the finishing line to get this very important commission done in time for Christmas!

But Christmas Eve dawned, and the Tardis was finally ready to carry the Beastie Doctor off to his new home…

…And left me singing the “Doctor Who” theme tune for the next three days straight! Perhaps you’d like to join in?

Right, that should keep you all entertained until Friday, when we’ll be back with news from Paddy and Plunkett! Then next Tuesday I’ll be showing you some behind-the-scenes stuff from within the walls of Beastie Towers… expect to see those elusive, long-promised notebook extracts at last, plus some sketches, many half-baked ideas and a whole lot of crafting gear! See you then…

Don’t Fear the Reaper (He’s on Holiday)

Grim Reaper Beastie Catches Some Rays - N Depping/CrawCrafts Beasties
Here’s one Beastie who has truly landed on his paws! Grim Reaper Beastie had barely arrived with his new family before jetting off to enjoy the big blue skies in Mexico over Christmas! He certainly seems to be lapping up the sunshine in the photo above. Let’s hope he remembered to pack his sunscreen… something tells me his ghostly pale skin isn’t used to catching rays!
Grim Reaper Beastie at Tulum - N Depping/CrawCrafts Beasties
He does look strangely at home among the Mayan ruins, though!

During his trip, Grim Reaper Beastie visited Tulum and Coba – two major Mayan sites on the Yucatán peninsula. Back in pre-Columbian times, Tulum was the main port for the city of Coba, which is just under 30 miles away. Coba has several large temple pyramids, and visitors are still allowed to climb the 124 steps to the top of the tallest of these, Nohoch Mul. Even with human-sized legs, that’s a bit of a haul!
Grim Reaper Beastie at Coba - N Depping/CrawCrafts Beasties
I wonder if he was able to make the whole climb by himself, or if he had to cheat a little and hitch a lift!
Grim Reaper Beastie Contemplates the Climb Ahead - N Depping/CrawCrafts Beasties
While he was there, Grim Reaper Beastie happened to hear about the Day of the Dead (Día de Meurtos) festival… Apparently the idea of this Mexican national holiday has piqued his interest, and he’s already hoping to make another trip sometime to join in the festivities! Watch this space…

Thanks to Nicole for sending me photos of Grim Reaper Beastie’s Mexican adventure, they’re much appreciated! Hope you all have a super weekend… we’ll be back on Tuesday with another new Beastie and news of a monster giveaway!
