I’m Back! (Briefly!)

Hello everyone! I hope you’re all keeping well!

I’m still a liiiiittle bit busy here at Beastie Towers, and with Christmas on the horizon (eeeek! How did that happen?) it might be a while before I’m back to blogging with any kind of regularity.

However, I did want to stop in quickly and share some news… The Beastie Store is back!

Beastie Shopfront - CrawCrafts Beasties

Sumup, the company I use to process card payments for commissions and at markets, recently released their Online Store option in Ireland. I’ve always found their service to be great – easy to use, easy to track and with lower fees than a lot of their competitors. So, I thought I’d give the store a spin too!

You’ll find it here:

https://crawcrafts-beasties.sumup.link/

If you have a sec, I’d love for you to drop in and let me know what you think! I’ll be adding more Beasties and shipping options whenever I have a spare moment over the coming days too.

And now, gotta run… There’s monster-making to be done! I’m looking forward to hopefully catching up with you all again sometime soon, and WOWEE do I have some crazy commissions to share with you! In the meantime, here’s a quick taster of what I’ve been making lately to whet your appetites…

Take care and hopefully see you all soon!

Monster Online Sale!

Hello there everyone! Well, I’ve got some news for you all this week… We’re having a Beastie sale!

Yes, you read that correctly!

You see, some of the Beasties I have here in Beastie Towers have developed a serious case of lockdown cabin fever. They want (or perhaps more correctly, NEED) to stretch their little stripey legs and see more of the world. Normally I’d be taking them out to markets through the year, and that would quiet their yearning for adventure for a while. But with no big market days in sight just yet, this seemed like the best possible substitute.

Here are some of the lil’ woolly monsters who are eager to break out and explore pastures new!

And if you fancy a quick Beastie fix, and since we’re now halfway through the year, our printable Beastie 2021 calendar is now FREE!

Beastie Calendar Sale - CrawCrafts Beasties

But you’d better be quick!

The sale is running from now until this coming Saturday – that’s the 19th of June – and it will end at 6pm Irish time.

After that, I’ll be making some changes to Beastie HQ… The most significant being that there will no longer be an online store on the Beasties’ website. Over the past year, the number of Beasties finding new homes through the website has remained the same, but the amount of commission requests I’ve been getting has leapt up… And those commissions are becoming ever more complex, too! So it makes sense for me to focus on that side of things, at least for the moment.

For anyone who appreciates the simplicity of an Aran or Cookie Beastie though, don’t despair! I’m still happy to make these perennial favourites… Just drop me a line. You’ll even be able to add a more personal touch by selecting your preferred colour scheme and winsome monster smile style!

And finally…

Website updates always bring the potential for disaster interesting and unforeseen developments, so I’ll be skipping next week’s post to weed out any potential gremlins in the works. You can still keep up with the Beasties and their antics on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook in the meantime, though… And we’ll see you again in a couple of weeks!

Retro Style Beastie, A Commission by CrawCrafts Beasties

Vintage Fashion, Beastie Style

Greetings, Beastie friends! And wow, do I have a new Beastie treat for you this week… A fashion-conscious monster lady with an eye for retro style. Say hello to everyone, Ms Beastie!Vintage Style Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties

This Beastie was commissioned as a gift for a stylish girl who’s also big into vintage, and I have to admit that I had so much fun making her clothes and accessories.

For starters, let’s take a look at that dress.Vintage Style Print Dress - Commissions - CrawCrafts Beasties

Oh, do I love a good bold print! They’re my biggest craft shopping weakness. My fabric stash is heaving with fat quarters I’ve picked up while travelling, or random half-metres I bought “as a treat” when all I went into the shop for was a spool of thread. I was on the verge of wondering if perhaps I had a problem… But with all my favourite haberdasheries still closed, I was incredibly glad to have this stockpile! It meant that I was able to offer my customer a selection of prints with a bit of a 60s/70s flavour, and I’m so happy she chose this one. It caught my eye immediately when I saw it in the shop, and the colours look great with the Beastie’s lustrous red locks.

If you look closely, you’ll notice that I’ve been monkeying around with my construction techniques lately, too.Beastie Dress, Back - CrawCrafts Beasties

Facings in the bodice area on both sides of the dress make for a neater neckline and armholes, and the closure on the back sits better as well. Happy days!

The dress has a sweet A-line shape and closes with a hook and eye fastener on the back.

Oh, and while we’re looking at the back, let’s get another shot of that amazing hair.Red Hair - Beastie Style - CrawCrafts Beasties

This wool and alpaca yarn is outrgeously soft, and so much fun to style! It’s quite chunky though, so I cut down on volume by teasing some of the strands apart to make thinner pieces. Then I completed the hairstyle with a cute mint-green felt bow!

Turning around to the front again… A nice flick of eyeliner adds a bit of retro chic to any outfit, doesn’t it?Beastie Eyeliner - Retro Style - CrawCrafts Beasties

And this Beastie has more in her makeup bag, too. Behold, for the first time ever… Beastie nail varnish!Beastie Nail Varnish - CrawCrafts Beasties

I’m not a big fan of using glue, so the best option for a monster manicure turned out to be pearlescent sequins held in place with embroidery thread. They’re a sweet baby pink that flashes pastel yellow or blue, depending on how the light catches them.

Then, to complete the outfit, a pair of Beastie-sized pumps!Beastie Shoes - Beastie Vintage Style - CrawCrafts Beasties

These are based on shoes that our Beastie friend’s human counterpart actually owns. And this isn’t the only time we took style inspiration from her wardrobe… I also Beastified her earrings!Beastie Earrings - CrawCrafts Beasties

Aren’t these cool? And she doesn’t have to wear them all the time, either. The lobster claw clasps easily clip in to the small silver “everyday” hoops in her ears.

And last but not least… Let’s complete the look with a pair of Beastie-sized cat’s eye glasses!

Beastie Glasses - Retro Style Cat's Eye Glasses - CrawCrafts Beasties

This pair marks a bit of a departure in Beastie spectacle style – I don’t normally get to make bright or pastel-coloured frames! As usual, they have bendy wire legs to fit neatly around the Beastie’s head, and real lenses made from clear plastic.

Now, I know I said “last but not least” just then, but there’s more to this Beastie than her cool outfit. You see, over the last while, I’ve had a whole lot of “GME”s… That’s when I do up a sketch with lots of accessory options for someone and they say “Give me everything!”. And this was a serious GME! So be sure to join us again next week to see what else this Beastie took with her to her new home!

PS…

Cookie Beastie and Aran Beastie - CrawCrafts Beasties

To celebrate the long weekend and the arrival of spring*, we’re having a sale!

Beastie buddies in the Republic of Ireland can use the code SPRING2021IE to get free standard shipping on any purchase from our online store. Or, if you’re in the US, UK or Europe, MAYDAY21 will get you a €7 discount on registered post shipping for your Beastie store order. That makes it half price!

Both offers run until midnight on Tuesday (that’s the 4th of May), so get ’em while they’re hot!

*In theory, at least. I’m trying to ignore the frequent hail storms and chilly mornings we’ve been having this week.

New Beastie Time! CrawCrafts Beasties

New Beastie Time!

Hello there everyone! Wow, it’s nice to be back with a new post AT LAST. I hope you’ll forgive my rather haphazard blogging habits of late… With any luck, this will signal the start of a return to normality. Well, as close to normality as we ever get here in Beastie Towers, anyway!

And speaking of new, it’s been a while since we had any new Beasties around here, hasn’t it? I reckon it’s high time I fixed that. So… Hello there!
Birthday Beastie - New Commission - CrawCrafts BeastiesLook at this… A Beastie lady with THE MOST amazing hair. I had so much fun styling this – I think we’d better take a closer look!
Beastie Hair - New Commissions - CrawCrafts BeastiesI used two shades of pink yarn to give the hairstyle some depth, and added in some soft silvery yarn in the back to mimic her human counterpart’s ‘do.

And this human counterpart – she’s a busy lady! So this Beastie has heaps of accessories. But before we get into those, let’s start with a quick costume change.
Beastie-Sized Cardi and Scarf - New Work - CrawCrafts BeastiesHer scarf and sweet handknitted pink cardi are both removable, as you can see. And, because various lockdowns have forced me to improvise with my existing fabric stash rather than hitting the shops to find what I need, I ended up dyeing the scarf myself! Let’s just say I’m very glad my customer went for a nice neutral grey, rather than something more difficult to match.

Anyway, that leaves Mrs Beastie free to model this pretty floral print top.
New Beastie Outfit - Floral Top - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd now that she’s not wearing long sleeves, it might be a good time to get on with a spot of baking. Her magic magnetic paws will help her to hold everything.
Magic Magnet Paws - New Beastie - CrawCrafts Beasties

Ready! Cupcake, anyone?
Beastie Cupcakes - Commissions - CrawCrafts BeastiesThanks, don’t mind if I do! They look delicious.
Cupcakes close up - New Commission by CrawCrafts BeastiesRegular readers of this blog will be reassured to learn that, as usual, these delectable treats are free from sugar, fat, gluten, dairy products and palm oil. They’re also high in fibre – wool fibre, of course!

And while we’re on the topic of wool…
Beastie Knitting by CrawCrafts BeastiesThis Beastie’s new human friend is a fellow knitter, so I couldn’t send her little woolly monster out the door without a set of needles and a ball of yarn. As you can see, these ones a bit small for me to use anyway.

Finally, did you spot the bag she was carrying earlier?
Beastie Bag with Rosette - New Beasties - CrawCrafts BeastiesHer new human family has a strong connection with horses, and I wanted to include a big shiny felt rosette somewhere as a nod to that. Beasties have no time for modesty, so it’s a proudly-displayed “Best in Show”!

Hey, is there anything in the bag?

Oh yes.

First Aid Kit for beasties - CrawCrafts Beasties

It’s a miniature first aid kit, to celebrate the fact that this Beastie’s new human minder recently briefly retired from a career in nursing. I say briefly, because when the call went out for Covid-19 vaccinators, she was back in there like a shot (no pun intended)! Definitely worthy of being celebrated with felt and teeny stitches, I’m sure you’ll agree.

Alrighty, I think that’s everything. Time to pack up and ship out!
Time to Go! New Beasties by CrawCrafts BeastiesThanks to Suzi for requesting this awesome Beastie as a special birthday gift for her mum!

And, all being well, we’ll be back next week for another round of “Where in the World are Paddy and Plunkett?”. Be sure to join us then!

Where are We? H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties

Outstanding Blogger Award

Oh looky! We got an award!Blog Award Pedro L - CrawCrafts BeastiesThanks to Pedro at worldwidepedrol.com for nominating us!

Now, it’s been a while since I did an awards post, but I happen to know a pair of attention-hungry woolly monsters who would LOVE to tell you a little more about themselves.
A Snack for Paddy and Plunkett - H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties

So, here are Pedro’s award questions – take it away, lads!

What would you say about yourself that can be surprising?
Paddy:
People are often surprised to find out how tall I am. They always think I look smaller in photos.
Plunkett:
I think a lot of humans are amazed that we can travel by ourselves. They think Helen just picks us up and photographs us on her own travels, but that’s really not true.

Where do you live and what are your 3 favorite things about this place?
Plunkett: We live in Northern Ireland, and I think I like the beautiful countryside the best.
The Lads at Gleno Waterfall - H Crawford/CrawCrafts BeastiesPaddy: Yeah, and the beaches!
Paddy and Portbraddon - North Antrim Coast - H Crawford/CrawCrafts BeastiesIt’s also easy to travel around because it’s not very big.
Plunkett: Yes, that’s true. But somehow there’s still lots to see.
Paddy: I know! It must be some kind of magic!

If it wasn´t the pandemic and you could be abroad, where would you be at this moment and why?
Plunkett: The pandemic hasn’t really slowed us down that much. We’ve been some pretty interesting places these past couple of weeks.
Lockdown Tour Summary - Award - CrawCrafts BeastiesPaddy: I think he means ACTUAL travel, Plunkett, not just photoshopping ourselves into pictures. I choose LA!
Plunkett: Hmmm… In that case, Iceland! Lots of interesting geology there. Or I’d even go back to the Giant’s Causeway. I enjoyed our trip there last year. Why do you want to go to Los Angeles?
Paddy: To work on my tan, obviously. And launch my film career.

Either on blogging or arts or maths, what are your biggest inspirations and how do they inspire you?
Plunkett: I love nice, green, mossy places. Somewhere quiet where I can relax and watch the world go by for a while. And gardening! It’s so satisfying to watch things grow.Plunkett Likes... Award Post - CrawCrafts BeastiesPaddy: Action films! And fast cars!
Plunkett: You’re supposed to say why, Paddy.
Paddy: What’s to explain? Because they’re AWESOME!!

What are your tips to have a successful blog?
Paddy: Oh, tricky one! I think you should have loads of cool stuff, like high speed car chases and glamorous locations. We should definitely be doing more of that.
Plunkett: Or maybe just keeping it simple? Travel and banter with a buddy, for example?
Paddy: Hmmm… Yes, I suppose that’s good too!

What are your goals for this year and how do you imagine yourself in a decade?
Paddy: Be more famous. Then in ten years I will be SUPER FAMOUS, and a Formula One driver, and a film star with my own clothing line.
Plunkett: I’m pretty happy as I am, really. I’d like to see more of the world though, and perhaps add some more interesting specimens to my rock collection.

If you had the chance, what would you ask about me? (and I promise to answer in a future post! ahah)
Both: We heard you once visited Northern Ireland. Tell us more!

Outstanding Blogger Award, Part 2

Okay, now you know everything there is to know about Paddy and Plunkett! Next I need to pick out some nominees of my own. Here goes…

For those of you who are up for participating, here are the rules: provide a link to the creator’s original award post; answer the questions provided; create 7 unique questions; nominate up to 10 bloggers; ensure that they are aware of their nomination.

Nominees, please don’t feel under pressure to take part! We all have a lot going on these days! But if you do want to share a little more about yourself, here are Paddy and Plunkett’s questions for you. They’ve cut the question list down to five as well, to make the whole process a little easier 😉

  1. Coffee or tea? (Or no hot beverages at all?)
  2. Where in the world would you most like to visit, and why?
  3. What is the most delicious meal you’ve ever eaten, and where did you have it?
  4. What have you made that you’re most proud of, and why?
  5. What’s your plan for today?

And Finally…

Where in the world were Paddy and Plunkett last week?
Perseverance Panorama - Paddy and PlunkettAnswer: Nowhere. Because they weren’t on this world at all! As spotted by some eagle-eyed readers, the boys have magicked themselves onto Mars. Overall, they enjoyed the experience, but Paddy says the nightlife isn’t really up to much.

Plunkett “borrowed” the pictures for this adventure from NASA’s website. This link will take you directly to the gallery of images from the 2020 Perseverance Rover mission – there’s some really cool artwork on here, as well as actual photos from the surface of the Red Planet! Enjoy!

We’ll be taking a break from blogging for a little while, to get caught up on some other bits and bobs. But don’t worry, we’ll be back to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with you in a couple of weeks! See you then!

New Year, New Calendar!

Hurrah! 2020 has been a heckuva year, but we’re down to the last couple of days now AT LAST! So might it maybe be a good time to start looking to the future? I thought so, and that’s why I sat down today to comb through my Beastie photo archives and put together an all-new Beastie Calendar for 2021!

Beastie Calendar 2021 - Cover - CrawCrafts Beasties

Hello, new year!

Because I didn’t make a new calendar last year (some pretty good foresight there, I thought) I had two years of Beastie pics to use. Hopefully you’ll like my selection! I’ve also changed the fonts and layout a bit…
… While still preserving the useful key features (a Monday-Sunday week and note space at the bottom) that help keep me on track.

A year’s worth of monster mayhem will set you back a mere ONE Euro, and you can download your calendar instantly from the order confirmation page on the website, or pick it up in your email. Then print off as many copies as you like… I’ve already got one set aside for home, one for the studio and one to keep track of my knitting classes!

You can grab your copy of the 2021 downloadable calendar in the Beasties’ online store, here… And don’t forget to tell us all about the events you’re most looking forward to in the comments!

It’s that time again…

Oh, it’s snuck up on me (and possibly all of you as well) a bit this year! But with the evenings getting darker, trees suddenly looking bare and the odd set of fairy lights appearing in windows around town, there’s no denying it – the end of the year is fast approaching. And that means…
Paddy's Idea - Beastmas 2018 - CrawCrafts BeastiesNo, I’m not quite ready to say it yet either! So I’ll just hint that I’m going to be very busy for the next couple of weeks, and leave it at that for the moment.

And my full schedule means that unfortunately the BeastieBlog will be going into hibernation until things quieten down a bit on the monster-making front. Don’t worry, we’ll be back before the end of the year to wave goodbye to 2020! So, stay safe out there and we’ll rejoin you in a few weeks.

In the meantime, please resist the urge to party too hard…

Beastie Fall Festivities!

Hello there Beastie friends! Erk, not such good news from Dublin this week… As of last night, all of Ireland has moved to the highest level of Covid-19 restrictions to try to get our case numbers back under control. But it’s not all doom and gloom! Autumn (or Fall) is here in all its glory, and October is my very favourite month to get out and enjoy some natural beauty.

And it looks like I’m not alone in this. Look who I bumped into in the park!
Autumn Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesYou don’t see one of these guys very often – it’s Autumn Beastie! This little monster has been picking out the choicest fallen leaves for… Some ill-defined Beastie purpose. But there’s a great selection in there, and look at those colours!
Autumn Beastie's Leaf Collection - CrawCrafts BeastiesLovely!

Then, further along…
… I found a pair of Aran Beasties too! They were happy to pose for a photo.
Aran Beasties pose for the camera - CrawCrafts BeastiesCheers lads! This is only a small park though, so it was only a matter of time before their path crossed Autumn Beastie’s. Fortunately, Beasties aren’t having to do social distancing like the rest of us.

That’s two extra pairs of paws to help with the leaf hunt! Good stuff. And it looks like further reinforcements are on the way too.
Woolly Jumper Beastie Joins In - Fall fun - CrawCrafts BeastiesHey there Woolly Jumper Beastie… Wow, this is turning into a full Fall Festival out here! And it’s definitely sweater weather today, with so many cosy knits to admire.

Hurling Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesHow about you? Are you enjoying being out and about, kicking through piles of fallen leaves? Or is your Fall experience more of the hot-chocolate-by-a-roaring-fire variety? Be sure to tell us all about it in the comments!

And as usual we’ll be back next week, with more shenanigans from Beastie Towers… See you then!

Quarantine at Beastie Towers

Hey there everyone! How are you getting on? We’re still locked in here in Ireland, but there’s the possibility of a few things starting to return to normal next week, so hopefully I’ll have some good news for you then. In the meantime, we’re sticking with quarantine procedures, and trying to go out as little as possible. And although they’re Corona-immune, even the Beasties are getting in on the act. Here, take a look!

Quarantine Birthday Beastie – A sign of the times!

People are pretty quick off the mark when it comes to suggesting personal touches for their Beastifications. So this Birthday Beastie…
Quarantine Birthday Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties… Got a Covid-19-era update!
Quarantine Face Mask - CrawCrafts BeastiesThe face mask is made from cotton, pleated and lined with felt for some good woolly air filtration. Then, a pretty ribbon strap with a little elastic helps to hold it in place.

And when she’s staying safe at home, and not having to be socially distant… There’s a whole birthday cake to eat!
Quarantine Birthday Cake - CrawCrafts BeastiesTwo needle-felted wool sponge cakes, sandwiched between layers of felt jam and icing? That would put a smile on any Beastie’s face!

Quarantine Entertainment

So, I’ve been working from home these past few weeks – you might remember seeing my desk invaded by a Beastie raiding party on St Patrick’s Day in this post – and I’ve noticed myself picking up some new hobbies. I thought I’d share them with you… Mostly to see if any of you have started doing similarly odd things yourselves!

The big difference between home and my studio is that I now have a window to stare out of when I’m figuring out the angles of my latest Beastification. I also don’t see Ophelia the studio cat as often as I did. I miss her antics!
Ophelia - Studio Kitty - CrawCrafts BeastiesAs such, I have been avidly following the daily patrollings of Big Ginger Cat and Little Tortoiseshell Cat, who swing by several times a day to sunbathe, hunt bluebottles and wage war on the magpies in the big tree. It’s nice to see them continuing about their usual business!

And when the cats are away, the birds get a chance to play… A lot of people are saying that they’ve been noticing birds and birdsong a lot more, and we’ve been enjoying the occasional full-on dawn chorus here some mornings. It’s harder to see the little birds in the trees now that they’re all leafed out, but I’ll sometimes catch a glimpse of a robin or blackbird as they flit from branch to branch. This morning I spotted some swifts for the first time this year, zipping around high in the sky! Has anyone else become an amateur ornithologist lately?

Then again, there’s a downside to that window too. When the sun comes around in the late afternoon, it blazes in and makes my work table hotter than the surface of Mercury! What’s a girl to do?

Why, retire to the garden of course! My balcony pots are looking better tended than they have in years, and on Sunday I harvested my first home-grown radish. Talk about satisfying – I’ll share some pics when a few more things sprout or flower.

And how about you? Have you taken up a new quarantine hobby, or had a change of pace that lets you see things you’d have missed before? Be sure to tell us all about it in the comments!

We’ll be back on Friday with a run-down of some of the craziest Beastie accessories I’ve ever made, so be sure to join us then!

Flashback Friday – One Beastie and her Dog

Hey there everybody! As promised in Tuesday’s post, I’m going to reintroduce Flashback Friday posts… Just while we’re all stuck indoors. Also, it might help me remember what day of the week it is!

So, who’s up first? Well, this Beastie recently had a sheltering-in-place adventure with her human, and that’s what made me think of revisiting my own photoshoot pictures from a couple of years ago. So let’s say a big hello to tierneycreates Beastie…
