Loyal Beastie spotters will already have seen this picture on our Instagram yesterday, but in case you missed it here’s a clue to the identity of the new Beastie you’ll be meeting today…
And here’s how he turned out – meet David Bowie Beastie!
Or should that be Beastie Stardust? Either way, I had fun playing makeup artist to a real life monster rock star! The famous “stripe” is mainly felt appliqué, but with the finest lines embroidered in black cotton…
…Then I picked some chunky merino yarn to recreate his signature brilliant red feathered hairdo!
Since this Beastie is going to live with a human mum and her recently-arrived little one, we decided to keep his accessories to a minimum – just in case he ends up babysitting! Even so, I thought I could add a touch of glam rock style to his jumpsuit by using a shiny cotton and viscose yarn, and popping on some over-the-top satin shoulder pads…
Thanks to Tracy for requesting this very special Beastie as a gift for her friend! The idea had been stewing in my brain for a while, and it was great to finally have an excuse to make it a reality.
Here’s wishing you all a monster week, and don’t forget to share your favourite David Bowie song with us in the comments!
wow! How handsome! You did such a great job on him!
Thank you! He was fun to do… when a person has very distinctive characteristics like David Bowie did, it’s much easier to make their Beastie counterpart!
That makes a lot of sense. He looks like he was fun to make too.
I make little clay dr who figurines sometimes and I always find that it is the little details that make it both the most fun and most rewarding once a piece is finished.
Oh cool! Have you ever put any of them up on your blog? I’d love to see them! And I HAVE to do the “guided tour” through a new Beastie when I hand them over – it’s how I justify the eye-popping teeny sewing that most of those accessories take. Oh, and since you’re a Doctor Who fan…
https://crawcraftsbeasties.com/2016/02/09/the-doctor-will-see-you-now/ 😀
Oh I love him! What a perfect little Doctor Who Beastie! I have not actually put any of them up. I thought about it yesterday when I was telling you about them. I don’t know why I haven’t gotten them on here yet. I’ll have to do this soon!
Why thank you! And you totally should put some of your hard work up for us to admire, I’m looking forward to meeting your creations 😀
I’ll do my best to get them on this weekend! Thank you for the encouragement 🙂
Good luck! 😀
ASTONISHING !!!! there was no doubting who this this Beastie is paying homage to …as for my favourite Bowie song Mmmmmm I’m torn between the classics of Let’s Dance & Heroes due to the memories they represent, more to the point which is your fave Bowie tune ???
Thank you! I’d actually be quite tempted to make another one, this time with platform boots and a guitar… he had such great style! Good song choices too, Mrs P – I don’t know if I could pick a favourite, but I have “Rebel Rebel” stuck in my head this morning 😀
You should go for it, along with a Phil Lynott & Marc Bolan 🙂
Oooh yes, they’d provide me with a deep vein of awesome hairstyles and outrageous outfits to mine! And I really want to make a Lemmy Beastie as well – plenty to work with there too, although his style was a little different!
Rock icon Beasties to the fore LOL
Yeah! Finally I’m living the rock’n’wool lifestyle I’ve always dreamed of! 😀
LOL
Lovely! 😄
Thanks! I really had fun with this one!
He is so cool. I love him. What would your beasties look like if they all got together? How many would there be?!
Oh, I would LOVE that! I reckon there are just under 200 of them out there, including Big Beasties and Minibeasties – maybe I should organise a reunion! Thanks for stopping by 😀
Wow! Another amazing Beastie. As for my favorite Bowie tune: Let’s Dance! For your viewing pleasure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2HWuR2mq5M
Thank you! And “Let’s Dance” seems to be winning the public vote so far… thanks for sharing the video, I’d actually never seen it before! Cheers for stopping by 😀
Awesome 🙂
Thank you! It’s certainly been a busy month for new Beasties, and there are more to come! 😀
Oh my word! I absolutely love him!
Thank you! He seems to be getting quite a following already! 😀
Woow, groupie beasties will line the stage!!! He is so handsome.
Heeheehee! It’s lucky I was able to sneak him out of the house the other day without getting caught by the paparazzi 😆 Cheers for stopping by!
Good for you! 😀
This is one amazing Beastie, and maybe my favorite!
Thanks! I’m actually kicking myself now for not making Bowie Beastie ages ago! Cheers for your comment 😀
He looks amazing! Better that the original, I think.. How do manage to part with them?
It’s still tricky sometimes… but this was a commission for one of my best customers, so that makes it easier 😃 Thanks for joining his fan club 😀
I ve never been a David Bowie fan, but I’m a Beastie Bowie fan : D
Heehee, I can’t argue with that! He really made an excellent starting point for a Beastie 😀
Hi David! Welcome to the club! I’m Zahra! I often visit the Beastie Towers when Helen allows me to. hehe! You are very fashionable! 😀
Helen, you are truly talented! 🙂 I am a fan! 🙂
Cheers Zahra! I’m glad you liked this newest arrival at Beastie Towers… and of course, you’re welcome to call in anytime 😀
Yay hehe 😀
I don’t know about favorite song, but the song that gets stuck in my head the most often and most stubbornly is Ch-ch-ch-changes. Love this Beastie…although the pic of his disembodied eyes was a bit disturbing :))
Right, got it… no more pictures from the Beastie assembly line! Although I did think that the “monster meat sale” banner that I spotted last week and put on Instagram was waaaay more disturbing 😱 And “Changes” is certainly a catchy lil’ number, isn’t it? I think it’ll be lodged in my brain for the rest of the day now!
The Monster Meat sign would have gone really well with the dismembered eyeball photo! 😄 And you’re welcome for the brain invasion…at least if the song is stuck in your head for a day that means I’ll be free of it for a bit, right?
Uh-oh, sounds like my Instagram is fast becoming the Beastie Horror Channel 😆 And that is EXACTLY how song-stuck-in-the-head works… unfortunately it was unable to survive the repetitious playlist in Other Work yesterday, so you’ve probably got it back!
Not yet. Lately I’ve had The Smiths stuck in my head. One particular song. I could post the lyrics and pass it on to you, but I’m not that evil.
Oh, go on… Is it “Cemetery Gates”? That one pops into my head fairly regularly, and I quite enjoy its visits 😀
O. M. G! Yes, it is!
Spooooookyyyyyyyyyy! Well, I’ll be happy to have that as my inner soundtrack for the rest of the day! 😀
Beastie Stardust! I love love love this! It’s so perfect! As for my favorite Bowie song it’s probably the acoustic version of dead man walking, although Space Oddity, The Man Who Sold the World and Life on Mars probably tie for 2nd place. He’s so adorable. Nice work. 🙂
Awww, thank you! I’ll have to hunt down that favourite song of yours, I don’t believe I’ve heard it. I really like “The Man Who Sold the World” too! Thanks for stopping by 😀
Oh you should! It’s quite good! You can find it on YouTube, the acoustic version is very different from the dance version, although both are good. I’m a softie for all things acoustic. 🙂
There’s always time for acoustic… Even for a guitars-and-screaming kinda girl like me 😀 This can go on my working playlist for today!
Yay! I like guitars-and screaming too! Although, I find I kind of like a little of everything. Mostly it depends on my mood. Some days it’s acoustics and instrumental music (particularly violin and cello) so…there’s kind of a range. 🙂
I’m the same… The only thing I can’t listen to is “X-Factor”-style pop. Why do they feel the need to sing 6 notes, when one would do?! 😆
