Spooky Scary FrankenBeastie - CrawCrafts Beasties

A Spooky Little Beastie Like You!

Hello there Beastie people! I hope you’re all keeping well, wherever you are, and that the lockdown isn’t giving you cabin fever just yet. I’m using the time to get caught up on commissions that have been in progress for a while – and that made me realise that I hadn’t introduced you lot to this spooky little fellow!
Frankenstein's Monster Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesHey there, FrankenBeastie!

I should point out that FrankenBeastie is short for “Frankenstein’s Monster Beastie”… Because, as we all know, Frankenstein was the creator of the monster, not the monster himself.

I’ve made a couple of these before – you can check out an earlier version here – but I think this marled olive green yarn gives a little something extra to his complexion that the plain green was lacking. Here, take a closer look!
FrankenBeastie's Lovely Green Face - CrawCrafts BeastiesWoooooooo! SCARY!

I preserved some classic FrankenBeastie features too – gruesome black lips, felt electrodes and a few extra embroidered stitches here and there, to keep body and soul together.

I also always picture the classic monster from the book as having stiff black hair, a bit like toothbrush bristles. So that’s what FrankenBeastie’s rocking here. It’s made from wool and alpaca yarn, meaning it’s actually lovely and soft – but hopefully you’ll keep that little fact to yourself. If the other Beasties find out, it’ll ruin his spooky street cred.
Hair and Bolts - Spooky FrankenBeastie! CrawCrafts BeastiesFinally, I dressed him in a ragged-edged shirt and faded charcoal trousers.

Then he was ready to head out into the night!
Bringing Spooky Back - CrawCrafts BeastiesLet me know if you bump into him when you’re out for your daily half hour of exercise!

Also, I have had a couple of people ask me over the past week if I’m still doing commissions. Let me assure you all that as long as there is yarn in my stash*, there will be Beasties! So if you think a monster friend might brighten up your days, get in touch and let’s talk monsters!

Until next week… Stay safe and keep washing those paws!

*And believe me, there is A LOT of yarn in my stash.

What’s Pug Got To Do With It?

Hello there Beastie friends! I hope you’re all keeping well in these rather strange times. To keep things interesting, we’ve got a slightly different new project to share with you this week – a Beastified pug! Here she is now… Hello!

Beastie Marge the Mini Pug - CrawCrafts Beasties

This fuzzy felty lady could probably use a little introduction. Remember the wedding commission I did at the beginning of the year?
Well, the happy monster couple was only part of the deal. I was also asked to Beastify Marge, a charming and elegant pug who came into the guys’ life disguised as a humble birthday card, and then became a member (if not the ruling matriarch) of the family. Here she is getting ready to enjoy the marriage ceremony back in January.
Marge the Pug at the Wedding - CrawCrafts BeastiesUnfortunately, Beastie Marge wasn’t ready in time for the wedding. She takes her appearance very seriously, and that held things up a little! But while the boys and their Beasties were honeymooning, I had time aplenty to get busy with my felting needles.
Marge, the Beastie Pug - CrawCrafts BeastiesTa-daaaah! You know, it’s actually quite strange to see her with feet!

I also gave her a typically twisty pug tail…
Pug Tail - Needle Felting by CrawCrafts Beasties… And her glasses really have lenses!
Glasses for Marge - CrawCrafts BeastiesFinally complete, she was ready to hop in a box and travel to her new home. By all accounts, she’s settling in nicely!

And in un- pug related news…

… Explorer Beastie had a little bit of recovering to do after last week’s St Patrick’s Day festivities
Explorer Beastie after the party - CrawCrafts Beasties… Although, Beastie antics aside, it has been nice to be at home for the last week getting on with some commissions! They’ve been stacking up a bit this past while, but with my teaching schedule completely on hold for the time being, I’ve really been enjoying getting on with some teeny sewing!

Another aspect of monster-making life that’s fallen foul of the coronavirus is our occasional market days. We were hoping to get out to at least one Dublin Flea over the coming months, and to investigate some of the new opportunities that popped up over Christmas too. While an online store isn’t much of a substitute for the fun of a market day, I’ve been giving mine a much-needed refresh to tide me over until I can get behind a stall again. So do drop in and take a look around – or get in touch by email if you just want to talk monsters!

Well, that’s all my news – how are you lot getting on? Are you working from home, or getting stuck into some long-awaited new projects now your day-to-day routine has changed? Let me know all about it in the comments… And stay healthy, wherever you are!

A Cool Mama Beastie Commission, by CrawCrafts Beasties

When the Woolly Work is Done…

… It’s time to relax and unwind, and spend a little more time doing the things YOU want to do.

So when I was asked to create a very special retirement gift for a longtime Beastie follower to give to her mum, I wanted to make sure her monster counterpart had plenty of fun accessories. That way she can indulge in all her favourite activities, now that she has time to enjoy herself!

Let’s meet her, shall we? Hello there!
Cool Mama Beastie in Aran Sweater - CrawCrafts BeastiesFirst of all, you can see she’s sporting a very lovely handknitted Aran sweater. This Beastie’s human counterpart loves to travel… And although she’s been to some pretty far-flung destinations, the Aran Islands (which lie just off Ireland’s west coast) remain one of her favourite places to visit. What better way for a Beastie to celebrate this connection than with knitwear?

I also copied her new human friend’s hairstyle as closely as possible. Check out those lustrous chestnut locks, made from lovely soft alpaca yarn!
Alpaca Hair and Aran Sweater - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd now, how about something to tie into her working life? For a time, our Beastification subject worked for St Patrick’s Athletic Football Club – a Dublin team based in Inchicore, just to the west of the city centre. She’s also the head of a family of self-confessed football addicts… That made this a prime candidate for being included in the accessory lineup!

So I cracked out the magnifying lamp and got to work on a Beastie-sized supporters’ scarf in the team’s colours, complete with teeny hand-embroidered club crest!

Outside of work, this lady’s biggest passion is cooking. I did consider creating a full four-course meal in felt as a tribute to her culinary prowess, but in the end we settled on something more portable… A bag embroidered with the logo of her favourite local butcher!
Hand-embroidered Lawlor's Butchers Bag - CrawCrafts BeastiesWhen it’s not holding the ingredients for her latest gastronomic experiments, she can use it to carry everything she needs for her other favourite pastime – getting lost in a good book!
Books and Tote Bag - CrawCrafts BeastiesAs you can see, I’ve provided her with a selection of Beastie-appropriate titles – The Monster Family Cookbook and a classic Hercwool Poirot crime thriller!

So, let’s get everything all packed up…
All the Accessories - Commissions - CrawCrafts Beasties… And let the good times roll!
Ready for Retirement! CrawCrafts BeastiesThanks to Niamh for choosing to celebrate her Mum’s retirement the Beastie way… And for all her help in getting the blend of accessories just right!

We’ll be back next week with the last of Explorer Beastie’s London adventures, so be sure to join us then!

Beastie Wedding Couple, by CrawCrafts Beasties

Monster Cheers to the Happy Couple!

Greetings, Beastie friends! And hooray, after a bit of a break, it’s new Beastie time again! Those of you who follow me over on Instagram might already have caught a glimpse of this handsome couple last week…

//www.instagram.com/embed.js… But I thought it was high time they got their moment in the blog spotlight. Hey there, guys!
Meet the Beastie Couple! CrawCrafts BeastiesNow, I don’t mind admitting that this was a pretty big project. All Beastifications are important, of course, but it was hinted that this pair would be joining the wedding party on the day. They’d be given the monster task of looking after (not eating!) the wedding cake, and the ceremony and reception were to take place in the oh-so-fancy Merchant Hotel in Belfast.

In short, these Beasties needed to look swish!

Fortunately, their human counterparts were on hand to narrow down my sartorial options. Armed with a photo of the very classy matching tuxedo jackets they were planning to wear for the reception dinner, I was able to get to work!

Here’s Mr D Beastie now, modelling his to great effect.
Wedding Beastie Jacket - CrawCrafts BeastiesThe jackets close with a snap fastener, and are completely removable. Underneath, a shirt with felt collar and cuffs completes the look… Then a black ribbon bow tie adds a final flourish. Here’s Mr P Beastie to give us a close-up!
Wedding Beastie Shirt and Bow Tie - CrawCrafts BeastiesLet’s just take another look at those jackets… First of all, they’re fully lined!
Beastie Couple Wedding Jackets - CrawCrafts BeastiesI used a lighter weight wool and viscose blend felt for this, to make sure the jackets kept their lines and didn’t end up looking like bulky winter coats. They’ve got black satin collars, and…
Jacket Cuff Buttons - Wedding Couple Beasties - CrawCrafts Beasties… I even copied the cuff buttons from the human-sized version!

Then it was time to get the couple looking like their people, by fitting them out with the right glasses and haircuts…
Wedding Beastie Style! CrawCrafts Beasties… And then sending them down the aisle with a special accessory each!

Mr P Beastie is big into music, so a felt appliqué and embroidery record was the obvious choice. Spot the pun band name!

Wedding Beastie with Pint - Beastie Couple - CrawCrafts BeastiesStrategically-placed magnets mean that the Beasties can set their goodies down and hit the dancefloor at the end of the night, too!

So, let’s raise a glass to the woolly couple – here’s wishing you a long and happy life together.

June Beastie – Baking the Most of It!

Hey there Beastie friends! And what’s this – could it be the first new Beastie of the new decade? I think so! Hey there, June Beastie!
June Beastie, a special commission by CrawCrafts BeastiesThat said, the most attentive BeastieBlog readers will surely remember her chance arrival on Paddy and Plunkett’s doorstep last year… And her subsequent departure to foreign parts in a convenient backpack!

But her visit was so fleeting that we didn’t really get a chance to check out all her cool stuff! So, let’s set 2020 off to a good start and get to know June Beastie a little better. She certainly loves to smile for the camera!
Smiley June Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties

She also loves to cook, so I was sure to make her a neatly-embroidered felt apron to cover her hand-sewn lilac t-shirt.
June Beastie's Apron - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd I’m hoping she’s as happy with her hairstyle as I am – check out those cute wool and mohair curls!

Then, how about we add a little sparkle? Hello, matching gold glasses and earrings! Very stylish.
The Glint of Gold! June Beastie - CrawCrafts Beasties

And finally… The item that has been raising the most questions – not least from Paddy and Plunkett! It’s a… Rolling pin?!
June Beastie's Essential Rolling Pin - CrawCrafts BeastiesWell, the way I see it, you never know when you might be faced with a baking emergency. And I’d hate to send any Beastie out into the world without their favourite piece of kit. But if you can think of any other eventualities where a rolling pin might be useful, or if you’ve ever found yourself in a situation where you thought “I really wish I’d had a rolling pin with me”, be sure to share them in the comments!

We’ll be back next week with the first of Explorer Beastie’s postcards from London… See you then!

Explorer Beastie in London - 2020 Update - CrawCrafts Beasties

Bringin’ Beastie Back for 2020!

Hey there everybody, and happy new year to you all! I hope you had a lovely Christmas/Beastmas/holiday season, and that you’re all ready to tackle 2020… We certainly are here at Beastie Towers!

So, it’s been a while – what have we been up to since we last sat down for a chat together? Well, the headline is MARKETS!
Christmas Market 2019 - CrawCrafts BeastiesIn 2019, I took a big leap and had a go at organising my own craft fair! I rounded up a group of my favourite local craftspeople, and met some awesome new makers as well.
Christmas Market - 2020 Update - CrawCrafts Beasties

It was A LOT of work, but I really enjoyed the challenge. Heck, I’d even consider doing it again in 2020!

I also had a few other market dates in the calendar as usual – the Beasties and I always love to get out and meet our public. Here we are at the Dublin Cat Fair!

//www.instagram.com/embed.js

And of course, there were a few commissions in the mix, just to keep me on my toes! I can’t wait to introduce you to all these new additions to the Beastie family over the next couple of weeks!
Beasties of 2019 - 2020 Update - CrawCrafts Beasties

But before the Christmas madness set in, let’s not forget that Explorer Beastie and I skipped town for a couple of days to visit friends in London! He’s looking forward to sharing his holiday snaps with you all.

Finally, with everything else that was going on in the last few months of 2019, creating a 2020 Beastie calendar didn’t quite make it onto my to-do list. That said, I depend on mine so much that I ended up rejigging the dates from last year’s so that I could reuse it! I was just going to keep it all to myself… But I’ve decided to add it the Beastie Store as a free download if any of you want to grab a copy. Click here to go directly to the listing!

Well, hopefully that’s whetted your appetites for a fresh year of monster mayhem! Now I’m looking forward to catching up with all of your news… Be sure to say hi in the comments so that I remember to swing by your blog!

We’ll be back next week with more from June Beastie, who made a surprise visit to Paddy and Plunkett at Beastie Towers a couple of months ago. If you missed it, you can pick up the thread of the story here and here.

Plunkett Joins In - Travelling Beasties - H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties

Travelling the World – The Beastie Way!

Hello there Beastie friends! Please excuse us for being a little late this week… more on that later in the post. First of all, I believe we have a travelling lady Beastie to catch up with!
June Beastie at the Door - Visitor - H Crawford/CrawCrafts BeastiesIf you’re not entirely sure who this is, you can find out in last week’s post! We’ll wait for you here.

Ready? Good, because Paddy and Plunkett are about to reveal the secret of their globetrotting success!

“The best way to get anywhere is to hitch a lift in human luggage. Right, Paddy?”
“Right! And it’s your lucky day, because this bag here…”
Travelling, Beastie-Style! H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties“… Belongs to a guy who’s travelling to Washington DC tomorrow!”

What perfect timing! But our guest has some reservations.
“Sounds great – but how do I get in?”
“Don’t worry, we’ll help. One, two, three… UP!”
Paddy Lends a Hand - H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties“Not quite there…”
“Plunkett! A little help, please?”
Plunkett Joins In - Travelling Beasties - H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties“Sorry! Is that any better?”

Let’s hope this is worth it… Oh, look! She seems to have found a safe foothold!
Nearly there! Travelling Beasties - H Crawford/CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd after a slightly inelegant scramble…
Pitfalls of Beastie Travelling - H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties“Eeek! My rolling pin has got stuck!”
“Why does she have a rolling pin, Paddy?”
“Well, Plunkett, you never know when you might need to make a pie on the go. I might start carrying one myself… Should we help her out?”

“No need, boys! Success! USA, here I come!”
One Beastie, Ready for Departure! H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties
“Bon voyage! Now, Paddy, I think you said something about dessert?”

Well, look at that! I think the lads might have found their true calling in life… As travel agents!

And now, some news – yes, it’s that time of year again when things start to get CRAZY. I’m seeing glittery Santa Clauses in shop windows, and here in Dublin we seemed to have jumped very abruptly into winter! So I’ll be putting the BeastieBlog on hold for a couple of weeks while I frantically make market stock, get some custom Beasties together and, for the first time, organise my own market!

In the meantime, I’ll still be dropping in to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, so please come on over and hang out with me and the Beasties there!

See you again soon, with tales of Beastie travels far and wide, plus some new monster friends to meet!

Paddy, charmed by the Visitor - H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties

A Mysterious Visitor…

Well hello there, Beastie friends! With Hallowe’en just around the corner, how about we take some time out from new Beasties and gather around for a tale of an unexpected and mysterious visitor?

Alright then, let’s begin…

It was a dark and stormy night… Oh no, wait a sec. Sorry, it was – LUNCHTIME!
Lunchtime at Beastie Towers - H Crawford/CrawCrafts BeastiesPaddy and Plunkett were just getting ready to tuck into a human-sized portion of their very favourite meal – honey mustard chicken.

“Made with Albanian honey, Paddy!” announced Plunkett proudly.
Plunkett's Albanian Honey - H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties“Hang on… When were you in Albania? Did you go without me?!”

Fortunately, before Plunkett had to figure out his answer, there was a knock at the door.
“Are we expecting anyone?”
“I don’t think so. But here, I’ll go… Just don’t eat all my lunch!”
Plunkett goes to meet the visitor - H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties“Sure thing… Shame to let it get cold, though. I’ll just have a bit. YUM!”
Paddy eats lunch - Mysterious Visitor - H Crawford/CrawCrafts BeastiesMeanwhile, at the door…
June Beastie at the Door - Visitor - H Crawford/CrawCrafts BeastiesIt was another Beastie! But Plunkett had never met her before.
“Hello there ma’am, how can I help you?”

He’s just so polite, isn’t he?

“Hi there! Oh my word, I’m such a big fan! I love reading about your travels. Now I need to get somewhere myself, and I figured you and Paddy were just the Beasties to ask! May I come in?”

Well, she didn’t need to ask twice.

“Paddy! We’ve got a visitor! She’s travelling to…”
“The US. North Carolina, to be precise!”
Paddy Meets the Visitor - H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties“And she’d like our guidan… WHERE’S MY LUNCH?!”
“Ummm… A human ate it!”
And then, rapidly changing the subject, “Plunkett, you can’t just go letting anyone into the house. How do you know she’s not a vampire? Or a Were-Beastie?”

Paddy was apparently keen to introduce a spookier note into what has turned out to be quite a pleasant story about Beasties helping each other out.

But luckily, their visitor knew exactly how to break the ice.
Paddy, charmed by the Visitor - H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties“Oh, you must be the intrepid Paddy Beastie! I’ve read all about you – what a pleasure to meet you at last!”
“Intrepid? Why yes, I suppose I am! Hey, we were just about to have dessert… Care to join us?”

Well, it looks like her journey is off to a good start! Join us next time to see how the boys manage to help her on her way…

Virtual Reality Beastie - Commissions by CrawCrafts Beasties

Beasties in Virtual Reality!

Hello Beastie friends! And in case the post title had you wondering – no, I haven’t drastically changed direction and started working in near-future tech. The Beastie virtual reality experience is probably at least a couple of years away. Virtual reality FOR Beasties though – that I can do!

Virtual Reality, Beastie-style - CrawCrafts Beasties
This woolly monster dude was created as a very special gift for a guy who’s also super into his tech. The VR headset and headphones are modelled on his human-size equivalents… But they’ve been cunningly Beastified using 100% wool felt and a little bit of embroidery!

And the tech doesn’t stop there, either! He’s also got a special Beastie-sized controller for a drone…

Special magnetic paws, of course!

Beastie Dumbbell - Virtual Reality BeastieA Beastie has to stay fit, after all! And since this little guy’s human counterpart works in a gym, he’ll fit right in there too. Especially in his cool shorts and muscle vest outfit…
Virtual Reality Dude Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesWait a sec, who’s that I hear?
Beastie Pekingese - CrawCrafts BeastiesIt’s our Beastie’s trusty pup – a Beastie-sized Pekingese! (Or should that be Beastie-ngese?)

Anyway, it looks like this sweet little felted fuzzball is certainly happy to see his owner!

And now, just one more accessory to complete the look. This Beastie is off to live in Greece, so he’ll definitely need…

That’s better. Time to kick back and relax…
Relaxing in Sunglasses - CrawCrafts Beasties… Because this modelling malarkey is tougher than it looks!

Thanks to Trish for commissioning this awesome, accessory-laden Beastie! I hope he’s enjoying his new life in the sunny Med. I really need to start delivering these Beasties by hand, and get to some of the exotic places where they end up!

We’ll be back next week, when Paddy and Plunkett will be helping out an unexpected visitor. See you then!

Detective Beastie, A Commission by CrawCrafts Beasties

The Curious Case of Detective Beastie

Hey there everyone! We’re broadcasting a little later than usual today, but hopefully I can make it up to you all by introducing a super new Beastie – with a heap of cool accessories! Soooo… Hello there, Detective Beastie!
Detective Beastie by CrawCrafts BeastiesAdmittedly, she doesn’t look very detective-y just yet. Let’s get ready for work!

“Hey, where are my glasses?”
Detective Beastie's Glasses - Commissions - CrawCrafts BeastiesAha! That’s better. This might also be a good time to admire her lustrous red locks and sweet star print tunic!
Lovely Red Beastie Hair - CrawCrafts BeastiesI always knew this Beastie would be going to live in Texas, so this sweet fabric was the perfect nod to her new home in the Lone Star State.

What’s next, then? Oh yes, COFFEE.
Detective Beastie's Coffee - Commissions - CrawCrafts BeastiesA nice frothy felty cappucino is the best way to start the day. Yum!

Now, like most Beasties, Detective Beastie wants to have everything that her human counterpart has. So when she heard that her new buddy usually wears a pink cotton jacket to work… Well, you can probably see where this is going.
