Piemaker Beasties Get to Work!

Wow… Looking at this picture, it really seems like a very long time since I sent these two off to their new home in the UK! Check out how green everything is outside!

Anyway, despite the pre-Christmas rush, the Piemaker Beastie Girls have found some time to send me a couple of photos of themselves. They’re working hard for fellow pie enthusiasts Farmhouse Direct…

… Or so they say. To me, it looks like they’re gadding about in a pie-filled wonderland!

While one Beastie poses next to a mountain of pies stacked as high as her head, the other is lounging around on a gigantic pastry-based sofa… YUM!

OK ladies, breaktime’s over! Time to show off the human-sized pies that inspired the Beastie versions I made for you…

That’s better. All in a day’s work for these two!

Thanks to Suzanne for taking these photos – I always love getting updates from Beasties abroad. And now I think it’s time for lunch! I could really go for a pie today, for some reason… See you all next time!

It’s A Family Thing

Hooray! It’s new Beastie time again! And who’s this battling his way through the undergrowth?

He definitely seems to be looking for someone! Oh, wait…

…There they are! That must mean it’s time to unpack the picnic…

YUM!!

And there was just enough time after lunch for me to take some studio photos of these Beasties and their accessories! For starters, Cool Dad Beastie is a big Munster Rugby fan, and can usually be seen wearing his favourite team jersey…

… And his luxuriant beard is the envy of all his monster friends!

He also has everything his family needs for a day out exploring – they love to go camping together!

And what about our beautiful Beastie Mum?

Well, she’s super-proud of her little one, and has wrapped him up in a cosy hand-knitted blanket to keep him toasty!

She’s a rugby fan too… but she’s a Leinster girl! Let’s hope there aren’t any fallings-out on match day!

Yes, I know there’s no 17th player on a rugby team, but what a sweet way to commemorate their baby’s birthday! Definitely one for the family album!

And since we’re talking about families, it seems like a good time to say a big thank you to my own nearest and dearest! Your photographing, word-spreading and general support is very much appreciated… the Beasties and I consider ourselves lucky to have you all on our team!

Ooooh, New… Beanies?!

It’s not just Beastiemaking that’s been keeping my hands busy these last few weeks! Regular hangers-out on the BeastieBlog may already have encountered my little plushie beans… if not, you can catch up here!

Normally, these beans are small enough to sit comfortably in your open hand. But then I got a request on Etsy for something bigger. A whole lot bigger! So I set about supersizing my regular beanie template…

The upscaling process meant I needed to stitch the features a little bolder…

And my customer asked if I could personalise the bean with the recipient’s name – great idea!

And who will be getting to cuddle up to this soft, squishy beanie friend?

Why, this happy little lady of course! Here they are celebrating her 3-month birthday together… hope you had a great day, Clara! Also, thanks to your mum for sending me this lovely photo and allowing me to share it with the world!

As for me, I think I’ll definitely be growing more giant-size beans in the Beastie Towers garden this autumn!

Love is in the Air… Again!

Well, if any of you were wondering when high season for Beastie weddings is, I’d say it’s safe to assume that it’s happening right now! Last week I sent another happy couple on their merry monster way… and aren’t they a perfect match? Just look at that colour coordination!

And now for my favourite part – let’s take a look at their outfits! We’ll go with the bride first this time…

Isn’t she a vision of Beastie beauty? I love how she’s paired her simple, elegant wedding dress with a bouquet of scarlet roses and glossy red lips for a feisty pop of colour. They go nicely with the flowers in her hair, too!

And of course, she’s been to the same hairdresser as my last Bride Beastie for her wedding day ‘do!

But what’s this? Under that sophisticated exterior, she’s still sporting traditional stripey Beastie leggings!

Let’s hope her new hubby doesn’t object to that oh-so-slightly racy shot. Where has he got to, anyway?

Oh, there he is!

This guy is rarely seen without his trusty baseball cap… even on his wedding day!

In fairness, though, he does look very dapper in his navy suit with scarlet pocket square!

But why is he carrying a suitcase? Well, these Beasties are off to tie the knot in Italy!

Sweets for my Beast…

…Monsters for my hoooon-eeeeeey!

Yes, I know that’s not how the original song goes… but I like mine better. It really sums up the magic that happens when a Beastie meets that one special monster they want to spend the rest of their life with. And these two are definitely ready for their big day… let’s find out a bit more about the happy couple, shall we?

Let’s meet the groom first – I believe tradition dictates that the bride should always arrive a little late!

He’s looking sharp in his wedding suit… a bit of bespoke Beastie-sized tailoring to make him extra handsome for his lovely bride!

And who could resist that smile?

But should he really bring that pint with him?

Of course he should! Groom Beastie makes his own beer, so what better way to celebrate than a toast with his delicious homebrew? Oh look, here comes the bride… WOW!

Her simple but super-elegant dress is entirely hand-stitched…

…And check out the back!

Then of course she had to have her hair done nicely…

… And now all that’s left to do is to drink to a long and happy life together! Cheers!

Finally, there was just time to get some photos in the garden before they headed off on honeymoon with their human counterparts!

Big Beastie’s Big Day!

It’s been a while since I made a Big Beastie… which is a shame, because knitting Beastie bodies is one of my favourite downtime activities, and Big Beasties involve a good deal more knitting than the regular-size ones! So I’m sure you can imagine how excited I was to get a request for my first Big Beastie of the year… And the fact that it needed to be personalised as well was just the icing on the cake!

Big Beastie’s new friend has just finished studying for a Masters in Trinity College, and she wanted to pick up a memento of her time here in Ireland before heading home to Singapore. What better way to commemorate a stay in Dublin than a locally-grown monster? And this Big Beastie, with his navy and white colour scheme, is a literally dyed-in-the-wool Trinity student!

I also kitted him out with a diploma and mortarboard hat, so he’s ready for the Commencement Ceremony…

…And I embroidered a patch of the Trinity College crest, to remind him of his Alma Mater!

And finally, to help him through those long nights in the library, I’ve given him a pair of stylish specs…

Then there was just time to take a few photos around campus before he set off on his travels! Here he is in front of the old Long Room Library, home to the famous Book of Kells…

…And this sculpture is outside the Berkeley Library. After all, you can’t graduate without clocking up a little bit of library time!

And finally, a shot in front of the Campanile… the first thing that catches your eye when you enter the College through Front Arch!

High Time for Pie Time!

Anyone who knows me AT ALL will be familiar with my long-term love affair with pies, both sweet and savoury. In fact, so enamoured am I of the humble pie that when I first started to sell my knitwear (in those distant pre-Beastie days), I labelled my pieces “Good Pie Handknits”!

So as you can probably imagine, I was delighted to be asked to make some Piemaker Beasties to grace the counter of Farmhouse Direct‘s mobile pie shop… Although I will admit to craving tasty pastry treats throughout the manufacturing process!

Anyway, let’s meet these lovely pie-toting ladies, shall we?

I wanted these Beasties to be recognisably a pair, without being identical… so I made one crimson with yellow stripes, and the other yellow with crimson stripes. Plus, as you can see, they have different hairstyles, smiles and pies!

So while Red Piemaker Beastie has one big felt pork pie…

… Yellow Piemaker Beastie is carrying a tray of smaller pies, based on Farmhouse Direct’s own Brandsby Pies! Needless to say, I really enjoyed looking up reference photos for this project… YUM!

Oh, and I also made them some matching green felt aprons as a work uniform!

Let’s hope their first outing as pie sellers is a successful one!

Aaaand in other news, I’d like to say a massive thank you to Cheri at The Daily Post for including my entry for last week’s Weekly Photo Challenge in her list of “Photos We Loved” from that prompt! Look, the Beasties even got a shout-out in the intro!

A New Kind of Beastie!

Rugby players look normal enough when they’re on the pitch, or standing with other rugby players. It’s only when you see them among the regular, non-rugby-playing public that you realise that they’re often around a foot taller than the rest of us, and built like tanks.

So when I was asked to make a rugby-playing Beastie buddy for a friend’s boyfriend, I was hardly surprised when she requested that her Beastie be a little taller than usual. And that’s how a new superbreed of Beastie was born… the Big Tall Rugby Beastie! Here he is posing with Explorer Beastie, to give you an idea of his superior stature.

I wanted to add in a few personal touches to make this monster extra special, too. Big Tall Rugby Beastie’s shirt is a Beastie-sized version of the one his new human team mates wear…

…I even included the team’s crest!

His new buddy also always wears mismatched socks when he plays, so…

And I couldn’t let him leave Beastie Towers without an official Ireland rugby ball! Once he had that, he was fully kitted out, and ready to hit the pitch… Taaaaa daaaaaa!

Be sure to keep an eye out for him at the Rugby World Cup in a couple of months!

Mia Beastie in the Mountains!

Hooray! I always love to catch up with Beasties after they’ve left Beastie Towers for their new homes. This week, I’m happy to share some photos of Mia Beastie, taken just after her move to Poland a couple of months ago! Of course, she had to get there first… Passports at the ready!

And don’t forget to check the size of your cabin baggage…

I think Mia Beastie was really excited to see planes for the first time!

Once she touched down in her new home, Mia Beastie started exploring pretty much immediately! Her first big adventure was a visit to Zakopane, a town in the very south of Poland, near the Slovakian border. Zakopane lies at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, and is a popular destination for skiers and climbers. Mia Beastie decided to tackle Kasprowy Wierch first… it’s one of the most popular ski peaks in Poland, and it marks the border with Slovakia, so you can literally be in two places at once.

You can also take a cable car to the top, which makes the climb a lot easier. Well, Mia Beastie didn’t want to ruin her pretty dress!

Look at that view! And there was more to come…

It was certainly a bit nippy at the top of the mountain, but the scenery made it totally worthwhile! Mia Beastie was also tempted to try her hand at skiing, but unfortunately they didn’t have any skis in her size…

Soon it was time to come down again… the prospect of tasty pierogi for dinner meant that Mia Beastie wasn’t going to hang around in the mountains all day! Better head back to that cable car…
And apart from one hair-raising moment, when someone suggested Mia Beastie might like to recreate some of the action scenes from “Where Eagles Dare”…

…She made it safely back down to earth!

Fantastic Beasties… and Where to Find Them!

You may all remember how much fun I had making Harry Potter Beastie a couple of months back… So I’m sure you can imagine how happy I was to hear that he was in need of a monster-sized friend to keep him company on his adventures, and to help him take on the Dark Lord Wooldemort!

Hermione was selected to be Harry’s companion, which was absolutely fine with me! I was looking forward to trying out a girl’s version of the Hogwarts uniform – so although Hermione Beastie has the same white shirt, Gryffindor tie and black robes I used for Harry, I’ve given her black tights, a grey skirt (I had some suitably school-uniform-y material in my vast fabric reserves) and a grey knitted sweatervest.

I also thought I’d make her a Time Turner necklace, as featured in “The Prisoner of Azkaban”!

And of course, there was her hair. I was looking forward to recreating Hermione’s famously exuberant hairdo so much that I left finishing it until the very end! Here’s a closeup of the front…

I also had to make sure she had all the essentials to get her through another school year! So of course she got a wand, inspired by the one Human Hermione uses in the movies…
… And Hermione wouldn’t go anywhere without at least one textbook in tow, so I chose this one for Hermione Beastie – just as a little light reading.

Then there was just time to make her a lovely cosy Gryffindor scarf (to prepare for the winter term)…

…And she was ready to go!
