Oh, it’s snuck up on me (and possibly all of you as well) a bit this year! But with the evenings getting darker, trees suddenly looking bare and the odd set of fairy lights appearing in windows around town, there’s no denying it – the end of the year is fast approaching. And that means… No, I’m not quite ready to say it yet either! So I’ll just hint that I’m going to be very busy for the next couple of weeks, and leave it at that for the moment.
And my full schedule means that unfortunately the BeastieBlog will be going into hibernation until things quieten down a bit on the monster-making front. Don’t worry, we’ll be back before the end of the year to wave goodbye to 2020! So, stay safe out there and we’ll rejoin you in a few weeks.
In the meantime, please resist the urge to party too hard…
…Lose yourselves in the news… … Or overindulge in high-calorie foods. But you may wish to take your mind off the Beastie-shaped gap in your life by perusing the shelves of our online store. That we can heartily endorse! 😉
Hello there Beastie friends! Erk, not such good news from Dublin this week… As of last night, all of Ireland has moved to the highest level of Covid-19 restrictions to try to get our case numbers back under control. But it’s not all doom and gloom! Autumn (or Fall) is here in all its glory, and October is my very favourite month to get out and enjoy some natural beauty.
And it looks like I’m not alone in this. Look who I bumped into in the park! You don’t see one of these guys very often – it’s Autumn Beastie! This little monster has been picking out the choicest fallen leaves for… Some ill-defined Beastie purpose. But there’s a great selection in there, and look at those colours! Lovely!
Then, further along… … I found a pair of Aran Beasties too! They were happy to pose for a photo. Cheers lads! This is only a small park though, so it was only a matter of time before their path crossed Autumn Beastie’s. Fortunately, Beasties aren’t having to do social distancing like the rest of us.
That’s two extra pairs of paws to help with the leaf hunt! Good stuff. And it looks like further reinforcements are on the way too. Hey there Woolly Jumper Beastie… Wow, this is turning into a full Fall Festival out here! And it’s definitely sweater weather today, with so many cosy knits to admire.
And more snug knitwear. Fall Fashion Show! And just as all the Beasties were preparing to go their separate ways… … Up pops Hurling Beastie! This little sportsmonster was keen to get a team together for a match, but with one hurl between four Beasties, it sadly wasn’t going to add up. Sorry! Maybe next week, eh? How about you? Are you enjoying being out and about, kicking through piles of fallen leaves? Or is your Fall experience more of the hot-chocolate-by-a-roaring-fire variety? Be sure to tell us all about it in the comments!
And as usual we’ll be back next week, with more shenanigans from Beastie Towers… See you then!
Hey there everyone! It’s a rainy old day here in Dublin, but even blustery showers can’t dampen my excitement about today’s post. This is essentially “What I Did During Lockdown, Part 1″… A monster haul of Beastie accessories for a very special woolly girl. Hey there, tierneycreates Beastie!
For anyone who hasn’t met her before, tierneycreates Beastie lives with Tierney of tierneycreates.com. She regularly pops up in Tierney’s blog posts (she recently took a trip to the library) and occasionally takes on the task of writing them herself when her human counterpart is busy.
Like a lot of people, tierneycreates Beastie went a bit crazy ordering stuff online while we were all sheltering in place.
tierneycreates Beastie indulging in a little retail therapy, borrowed from tierneycreates.com
Since the only person making Beastie accessories is yours truly, this meant I really had my work cut out for me!
First of all, she ordered some refreshments. And with many of my local off-licences offering home deliveries at the time, I decided it might indeed be a good idea to get in on that racket. Two bottles of Hop Monster IPA (a favourite Beastie tipple) coming right up! With libraries closed, getting her paws on some reading material was also high on tierneycreates Beastie’s to-do list. Human Tierney loves books about craft, personal development and home decor, so these titles should go down a treat. Next, she realised that this hat… … Needed a matching scarf. “But hey, it’s not winter just yet! I should probably update my summer wardrobe as well. Oooh, polka dots!” Into the cart it goes.
Fortunately there are always a few Beasties knocking around here at Beastie Towers, so I was able to tailor it to tierneycreates Beastie’s approximate measurements!
However, all this staring at the computer screen was beginning to take its toll.
“I know! I’ll treat myself to a smartphone… Then I can order from anywhere!”
Fair enough. One Beast-iPhone coming right up! Look how teeny it is! I have enough trouble trying to type on the human-sized ones. This super-slim model is made from felt with a shiny reflective ribbon screen so it looks the part.
Of course, tierneycreates Beastie isn’t just shopping for herself. So that her beloved miniature miniature Schnauzer Mikelet can join her on longer adventures… … She picked up a doggy backpack, just like the one Human Tierney uses to bring Mike the Miniature Schnauzer out and about! The top of the backpack is open with a drawstring so Mikelet can peek out and stay involved in the action. It also goes rather nicely with the sundress!
And finally, one of my most challenging Beastie accessories to date. She asked for… … A sewing machine!
This top-of-the-range miniature marvel is what every Beastie quilter dreams of. Bernina may make the creme-de-la-creme of human-sized machines, but if you’re a little woolly monster, a Beastnina is what you want to have on your craft table.
Still, I bet it’ll help tierneycreates Beastie to start stitching up a storm in no time. I just hope she still has time to help Tierney with her blog posts every now and again!
Here’s the finished haul… … And I was delighted to get a picture of Miss Beastie looking very summery in her new outfit! Thanks so much to Tierney for this awesome project, and for enabling her Beastie’s online shopping addiction! For any of you who have also been (over)indulging in a little mail-order lately, you can confess all in the comments below. We won’t judge!
We’ll be back next Tuesday with another new Beastie for you to meet – stay safe and see you then!
Hi there everyone! I have to say, it’s not really hiking weather out there today… But I’m sure the new Beastie we’re about to meet would happily give it a try anyway. After all, I did kit her out with everything she could possibly need for a day of strolling in the hills!
So, say hello to Hiker Beastie! I created this Beastie as a very special birthday gift for an active lady who loves to spend time in the great outdoors. And since she lives in Scotland, I needed to make sure the weather never had a chance to rain on her parade (or hiking trail). That’s why she’s wearing a very fetching handknitted bobble hat… … A rain jacket with handy hood… (Did you notice the teeny embroidered zips?)
… And a pair of go-anywhere hiking boots. I stitched some felt treads to the soles of these boots to make them extra-grippy, and finished them with some embroidery thread laces. Now she’s fully equipped from head to toe!
Well, almost. If she’s away for the day, she’ll probably need a backpack too. Et voila! This one is handstitched from 100% wool felt, and should hold everything she needs.
And when she’s not hiking…
… This Beastie has another hobby to keep her busy! We’ll need to lose the jacket for this part though. Why, you ask? Well, this Beastie lady also enjoys a game of shinty – a Scottish variant of ball-and-stick games like hockey, or the hurling we play here in Ireland. From what I could tell when I was doing my research, it can be pretty full-on… So this outfit will give her much more freedom of movement as she tears around the pitch!
Oh, I should probably provide her with a shinty stick so she can join in properly. Shinty sticks have a distinctive wedge-shaped head that sets them apart from the sticks used in hockey, hurling and other related sports like cammag (from the Isle of Man), bando (Wales) and Knattleikr (played by the Vikings in Iceland). In my quest to get the shape right, I was lucky enough to find this video of modern-day craftsmen making human-sized versions. I love how hands-on the process is!
Here’s my Beastified version – and our woolly friend holding onto it tightly with her magic magnet paws!
And one more thing…
Up a mountain or on the shinty pitch, life is more fun when you have a companion to share it with – right? And as a final touch, this Beastie has a four-legged friend to keep her company on her adventures.
This Beastie-sized pup is modelled on the pet pooch of our monster lady’s human counterpart, and is made from needle-felted merino and blue-faced Leicester wool.
Ready for walkies? I think so! Thanks to Anne for requesting this very special Beastification for her sister-in-law’s birthday!
And we’ll be back on Tuesday… Yes, Tuesday! With real life kicking back in again, I’m returning to my regular once-a-week blogging regime. If you’ve got a taste for past Beasties as a result of my lockdown Flashback Fridays though, you’ll find lots more in the website Gallery, or by scrolling through the Commissions category of the BeastieBlog.
No, not my sixteenth birthday! That’s longer ago than I’d even care to think about, thank you very much.
This post is actually about a very special creation for a customer who needed a unique, personal gift for her just-turning-sixteeen goddaughter. What better way to celebrate this important milestone than with a customised Beastie?
Let’s meet this VIM (Very Important Monster)! Hello there!
First of all, let’s talk about that hair. WOW! I had so much fun with this! I used two slightly different shades of pink to give the colour extra depth, and unwinding the strands to separate the individual plies produced this tumble of luxuriant curls. Then a combination of carefully-placed stitches and a little precision styling with my needle-felting needle helped me to copy my human subject’s favourite swept-over-the-shoulder hairstyle.
(If only I could apply these techniques to my own hair!)
And while we’re on the subject of style, we’d better take a look at her dress next. Beasties love humans with a playful sense of fashion, and I knew I was on to a winner here… A girl who wears bold prints and whose trademark items of clothing are floral nighties? Perfect! I offered a couple of different styles and prints in the design sketch… … And as you can see, the long-sleeved version in a cute turquoise, green and cerise floral print with felt collar and buttons won out. Good choice! It really complements her hair and healthy blue complexion, don’t you think?
But appearances aren’t everything. A Beastie needs interests and hobbies! It’s ok though – we’ve got her covered. First, a hand-stitched science book to keep her brain ticking over… … And a paintbrush, so she can let her creative side shine through too. Finally, I copied her human counterpart’s cool glasses! As usual, they have real clear plastic lenses and are removable. However, with this pair, I developed a new technique for making glasses that allows me to slim down the frames a little.
They also make a stylish hair accessory. But hang on a second, Miss Beastie – don’t you have a birthday party to get to? Best get moving, you’re only sixteen once! I’d say her future is as bright as her hair – what do you reckon?
Thanks to Maria for requesting this super-fun project, and advising on the details!
And we’ll be back on Friday with another peek into the Beastie archives. See you then!
Hey there everybody! You know, after Friday’s post on Beastie work accessories, and reading about Tierney’s recent studio update (seriously, take a look! I have such storage envy) I thought I’d do something a little different this week. So, let’s have a rare behind-the-scenes post… How about I introduce you to the hard-working tools, equipment and knick-knacks that help me perform the alchemic transformation of wool into monsters?
And because the internet loves a top 5, I’ve picked the 5 tools that make my crafting life so much easier. Let’s go!
1. Swiss Army Knife
Not even one of the biggest, fanciest ones either! I think this is the most basic model out there, but I use it ALL THE TIME. The scissors are super-sharp, and they’re great for getting into awkward corners. I also use the tweezers to unpick threads, tie knots, handle small pattern pieces and push stuffing into narrow or hard-to-reach places. The toothpick works for that too, and the nail file is great for smoothing off the wooden dowels that go inside some Beastie accessories. All that, and it folds up to the size of a pencil eraser! Genius!
And while we’re on the subject of cutting…
2. Rotary Cutter
Pictured here with its lovely assistants Cutting Mat and Metal Ruler. I’m still a fan of scissors for cutting out, but for the many, many pattern pieces that call for crisp, straight lines, you can’t beat this handy trio. They’re especially good for dealing with thick, unstretchy fabrics like wool felt (my craft material of choice), so any new project will probably see me wielding my yellow cutting wheel at some point!
3. Magic Magnifying Lamp
Otherwise known as “the reason I’m not blind”. After enviously looking at the supersize versions in the labs of technicians on “Forensic Files”, imagine my delight when one of my very own appeared in my Christmas stocking a couple of years ago. This thing is brilliant! The magnifying lens shows up every stitch in glorious detail, and the circular daylight bulb means that I’m not working around the shadows cast by my hands. It’s also probably cut my electricity bill in half while I’ve been working from home during quarantine!
4. Circular Knitting Needles
These are the reason I became hopelessly hooked on knitting again. Circular needles allow you to knit tubes, rather than flat bits that will eventually need to be sewn together. Now, I don’t mind sewing. But if I can knit and have something that is already almost finished when I cast it off, that’s definitely a bonus! What you see above are my most-used sizes, but I have… um… a few more that aren’t pictured.
Anyway, moving swiftly on… I’ll distract you from my knitting needle hoard with magic disappearing pens!
5. Air-Erase Markers
Well, full disclosure – it’s the ink that disappears, not the pen. There are lots of options out there for marking your pattern pieces onto fabric before cutting them out, but these are far and away my favourite. They’re thinner than tailor’s chalk, don’t rip up felt like chalk pens do, and the marks fade away all by themselves. Or, if you’re in a hurry, you can help them along with a spritz of water. The lines are also easy to see on most colours, apart from the very darkest ones. I’m still looking for something that draws well on black felt!
Did I miss anything out?
Oh yeah, Beastie assistants! Hmm, then again… Perhaps not, if you actually want to get anything done.
What makes your creative life easier? Be sure to share the tools of your trade with us in the comments! And we’ll be back on Friday with another look at Beasties past – see you then!
Hey there everyone, and greetings from a slightly grey and showery Dublin! What a strange coincidence that, as life here starts to return to something like normality, the weather follows suit! And since Ireland is very slowly starting to head back to work, I thought I’d devote today’s Flashback Friday to some of the “tools of the trade” accessories I’ve provided Beasties with over the years.
So, how about we start with a literal toolkit? This set of hammer, torch and pocket knife headed off to Illinois with Spencer Beastie in late 2018. The torch even has a glass bead “bulb” inside… … And the pocket knife opens to reveal a sharp(ish) felt blade! Next, some of the more unusual work related items I’ve created – a Beastie-sized micropipette and cell culture flask! Honestly, these little monsters can (and do) turn their paws to just about anything! You can find out which Beastie left Beastie Towers with this lot here.
And seeing that reusable takeaway cup in with the lab equipment reminds me… This Beastie wasn’t the only one who liked to kick off their work day with a delicious hot coffee! Does anyone remember this, from September 2018? As I said in the accompanying post, a Beastie could easily drown in a human-sized grande latte… That’s why they go to Starbeasts, where the beverages are scaled down to Beastie size. Now this monster lady is ready to start her day! (I also kinda love her tiara… It’s probably not workplace-suitable attire, but let’s give it a mention anyway!)
And while we’re on the subject of workday routines… This comes to mind. This Beastie-sized needle-felted croissant and hand-embroidered newspaper celebrate the way Bruce Beastie‘s human counterpart liked to start the day while he was working here in Ireland. And with good reason! Nothing beats a tasty breakfast… … And a scan through the news of the day! Phew! After that lot, you’d almost need to take the weekend off and put your feet up! Did I miss any favourite Beastie accessories out in my round-up? If I did, be sure to give me a nudge in the comments!
PS…
Speaking of weekend activities, you might want to take 20 minutes out to catch up with the latest episode of The Book Owl Podcast. Not only do the Beasties get a lovely shout out at the beginning (thanks Tammie!), it’s also a timely look at a very famous diary and the girl who wrote it. You can track it down on Podchaser, here.
And for dessert… A comment about the Beasties meeting up on Zoom on Tuesday’s post made me think of this. You’ll need to watch to the end to see why 😉
Enjoy! We’ll be back on Tuesday with more monster-shaped mayhem… See you then!
… Or, as first floated in Tuesday’s post, it’s a Pet-rospective! Beasties love their pets, and at the suggestion of regular reader Queen Bee, I thought it was high time we revisited some of those fuzzy companions from previous commissions.
Let’s start with the very first one – a woolly old English sheepdog I made way back in 2015! My very first Beastie dogs were knitted. You know me, I love to knit! But although the technique and yarn worked well enough here, I soon found it quite limiting. It’s hard to capture the huge range of dog body shapes, colours and fur textures with yarn!
Fortunately, it wasn’t long before I discovered the magic of needle felting… And all kinds of possibilities opened up.
Enter Mikelet, the miniature miniature schnauzer, who now hangs out with Tierney of tierneycreates and her hard-working blogging Beastie. Here he is just before he left Beastie Towers… … And he makes a special guest appearance in Tierney’s latest blog post, here. Also, thank you Tierney for listening to the interview I did for From the Maker to the Made and taking the time to write such a lovely review… Or rather, for getting tierneycreates Beastie to write it 😉
Mikelet turned out to be a real trendsetter – that’s like a red setter, only cooler – and I started to get a lot more people looking for Beastified versions of their beloved pets.
So, here’s a pair of pugaliers from last summer……And a Pekingese from a little later that same year. And of course, because I err more on the side of “cat lady”, I also started making Beastie kitties along the way. My first ones were special editions for my first time selling at the Dublin Cat Fair… … But I soon started making them to order as well! This Beastie with a black cat was made as a partner for the one in the photo above… … And then there’s this handsome fellow, created as a gift for a lady who owns a beautiful polydactyl cat called Paddy.
And finally, who could forget the best-dressed Beastie pet of them all – Marge the pug! I still love those glasses.
So, did your favourite make the cut? Let me know in the comments if I missed anyone out!
We’ll be back on Tuesday with more monster antics – have a great weekend and we’ll see you then!
Hey there everyone! The sun is shining here in Dublin, and I hope you’re all enjoying some fine weather in your part of the world too! It’s also nice to see life returning to something like normal in places – here in Ireland certain shops are starting to reopen, and we can now meet in groups of 4 or fewer. We are still being asked to stay at home as much as possible, but that’s ok with me… The Beasties are keeping me busy as usual. And it seems I’m not the only one! Last week I got a lovely update from Melissa and her Cookie Beastie… With pictures!
So, Melissa had just settled down to enjoy a nice cup of tea when… Hey there Cookie Beastie! Where did you spring from?
I suppose this little monster fancied a nice refreshing brew to go with that jellybean cookie. Tea and biscuits is always an irresistible combination. Also, check out the colour coordination – surely that’s no accident!
Not content with hijacking half of Melissa’s tea, Cookie Beastie thought it might be fun to take a tour of the garden… And pose for a few photos on the way. Check out this wall of cacti and succulents! I do love a good cactus, and it seems Beasties are no different. That said, it’s pretty hard to relax with all those prickles around… How about we find somewhere else to put our paws up for a minute?
This sunny spot looks perfect. Aaaaaaaah! Can there be any better place to spend a tea break?
Mind you, it’s not all laying back among the flowers here. During quarantine, it’s especially important to stay fit and healthy. Next stop – the gym! Um, you might have to put the cookie down if you’re to make any headway with those weights.
“What, really? Oh, okay… Maybe I’ll just spot you this time around, then?”
You know, that sounds like my kind of exercising!
A massive monster THANK YOU to Melissa… Not just for sending awesome Beastie pics, but also for being one of the essential workers who are keeping the cogs of their communities turning while the rest of us are staying safe at home. You rock!
Aaaand if you’re at home and in need of something to put a smile on your face, why not spend a quarter of an hour with The Book Owl? This is a new podcast series hosted by Tammie Painter, author and human in charge of wayward book-lovin’ Beastie Finn McSpool. Every couple of weeks, she explores a literary curiosity… And the most recent episode, about kids reading to dogs in libraries, is real feel-good stuff. Enjoy!
So, hopefully that little lot will see you through until Friday, when we’ll be back and revisiting some more Beasties from days gone by. See you then!
Hey there Beastie friends! I hope you’ve all been having a good week. For the last while, a couple of big commissions have been keeping me super-busy… So many accessories! I’m really looking forward to being able to share the finished projects with you all very soon, but in the meantime I thought I’d use this Flashback Friday post to revisit some of my most challenging Beastie accessories EVER!
Weekes Album Cover, 2017
I was reminded of this when I looked back at “Definitely Maybeast” in last week’s Flashback Friday post. This project predated the arrival of my magic magnifying lamp, and I’m still wondering how I managed to see to do those stitches in the dead of winter. You can read more about the creation of this Beastie in the Gallery – she has some pretty cool stuff!
I made my first Doctor Who Beastie for a Christmas order in 2015… And how can a little woolly Time Lord travel the galaxy without a specially-adapted old-style police phone box?The Beastie TARDIS was made of felt, and reinforced with foam and interfacing so it didn’t collapse in like a woolly tent! I lined the inside with shiny silver material for a space-age feel, and embroidered on the window panes and lettering. The doors also close with velcro so the Doctor can travel in safety.
And when I posted about this make, despite the fact that my photos back then were hardly top notch, one of my regular blog readers decided that the man in her life would appreciate a Beastie Doctor of his own! So… … I made a second one! And I took more photos that time. You can see the original posts about these commissions here and here.
From what I can remember, the trickiest part was cutting out the square panels under the windows. I invested in a rotary cutter, mat and metal ruler to help, but it was still slow going. Beastie Doctor Who seemed happy enough with the results though!
A Beastie-Sized Camera, 2018
Oh, I had fun with this one! It’s got it all – teeny sewing, a bit of embroidery, and I was able to incorporate a knitting pun to boot. I made this for Laura from A Pict in PAÂ – she’s a keen photographer, and, like me, she still likes to use a proper camera for her pictures. That’s worth celebrating! So I copied the shape of her DSLR as closely as possible… … And only went a bit overboard by making the lens and strap removable. Oh well, sometimes you just have to! Laura’s little monster left Beastie Towers with a whole heap of other accessories too – check them out here!
And then finally… Sometimes Beastie accessories take a while to get right. But this one stands out as the most challenging ever – even now! Paws up if you remember…
The Beastie Dragon, 2015
This was one of those projects that just wouldn’t behave. I’d get one aspect sorted, only to have something else start causing problems! But I learned a lot about prototyping and materials choices from making it, and despite many, many discarded templates… … I did end up with the ferocious-looking gold and silver dragon that my customer asked for! You can relive the entire, um, interesting experience here.
Well, that’s it for this time… But don’t worry if your favourite accessory didn’t make the cut this time around! I so enjoyed putting this together that I might do a second Beastie Accessories Roundup in a couple of weeks. Suggestions welcome, if you want to pitch in your two cents in the comments!
