Hello there Beastie friends! Erk, not such good news from Dublin this week… As of last night, all of Ireland has moved to the highest level of Covid-19 restrictions to try to get our case numbers back under control. But it’s not all doom and gloom! Autumn (or Fall) is here in all its glory, and October is my very favourite month to get out and enjoy some natural beauty.
And it looks like I’m not alone in this. Look who I bumped into in the park! You don’t see one of these guys very often – it’s Autumn Beastie! This little monster has been picking out the choicest fallen leaves for… Some ill-defined Beastie purpose. But there’s a great selection in there, and look at those colours! Lovely!
Then, further along… … I found a pair of Aran Beasties too! They were happy to pose for a photo. Cheers lads! This is only a small park though, so it was only a matter of time before their path crossed Autumn Beastie’s. Fortunately, Beasties aren’t having to do social distancing like the rest of us.
That’s two extra pairs of paws to help with the leaf hunt! Good stuff. And it looks like further reinforcements are on the way too. Hey there Woolly Jumper Beastie… Wow, this is turning into a full Fall Festival out here! And it’s definitely sweater weather today, with so many cosy knits to admire.
And more snug knitwear. Fall Fashion Show! And just as all the Beasties were preparing to go their separate ways… … Up pops Hurling Beastie! This little sportsmonster was keen to get a team together for a match, but with one hurl between four Beasties, it sadly wasn’t going to add up. Sorry! Maybe next week, eh? How about you? Are you enjoying being out and about, kicking through piles of fallen leaves? Or is your Fall experience more of the hot-chocolate-by-a-roaring-fire variety? Be sure to tell us all about it in the comments!
And as usual we’ll be back next week, with more shenanigans from Beastie Towers… See you then!
Hello there everyone! And as promised last time, it’s a new Beastie day here on the BeastieBlog… so let’s get ready to meet the latest addition to the family! Here she is now – Angel Olsen Beastie! Angel Olsen Beastie was created for Shane, who may be the biggest fan of human singer-songwriter Angel Olsen going. So this Beastification really needed to be a good one! Armed with some carefully-selected reference material (thanks Shane!), I picked out some wardrobe options for Ms Olsen-Beastie. As you can see, the vintage-style green dress with beehive hairdo won out. And much knitting, stitching and hairstyling later…
Twins? Well, maybe apart from the very obvious differences in human and Beastie body shapes. But I used a nice glossy chestnut alpaca yarn to replicate Human Angel’s very classy updo with short choppy fringe… … And I Beastified her dress too! I had a tricky time trying to find an exact match for the green in the photo, but this light olive satin from The Fabric Counter came closest while still complementing Angel Olsen Beastie’s pastel pink skin tone. I gave the dress a bit more of a “wiggle” shape than in the original sketch too, and added a concealed hook-and-eye fastening on the back.
And because satin is slippery… Even my spiffy new birthday sewing machine couldn’t deal with those teeny seams! So all those stitches are hand-sewn. Hey, who doesn’t love a teeny sewing challenge?
Thanks to the marvels of the internet, I was able to track down the make and model of the guitar that Human Angel Olsen usually plays. It’s a black Gibson S-1, in case you’re interested… And it lent itself well to the Beastification process.
And with some tactically-placed magnets in the guitar’s neck and body, Angel Olsen Beastie can really hold onto it! She doesn’t have to play all the time though. The strap unclips at the side so she can put it down at the end of her gigs. Sorry, no more encores… At least not until next Tuesday! Thank you and goodnight!
P.S.
One of the things Shane included in my “Getting to know Angel” pack was this video of a session for Seattle-based radio station KEXP, recorded back in 2017. Since live music is off the cards for most of us at the moment, I thought it might be a nice way to round off the post. Enjoy!
Hello Beastie friends! Wow, is it really Tuesday again already? How about we kick off this week with a continuing tour of Dublin’s Botanic Gardens, then? And don’t worry if you missed the first part last week, you can catch up here!
After encountering a very busy BumbleBeastie last time… … Explorer Beastie strolled off to see if there might be any other Beasties about. He didn’t have to go far… There’s one! Hey there, Gardener Beastie!
This little horticultural monster is super-busy keeping all the beautiful seasonal plantings in order… But there’s still time to pose for a quick photo! And we got a special guided tour of the displays, too. There’s plenty of floral colour everywhere for visitors to enjoy! Visitors of all sizes. And just as we were about to leave, Explorer Beastie spotted a familar face. Look who’s hanging out in the hanging baskets!
Nice to see you again, BumbleBeastie! Maybe we’ll bump into each other again on a future visit to the Botanic Gardens?
And speaking of the future, join us next Tuesday to meet another new Beastie! See you then…
Hello everyone! Welcome back to Beastieland… We’ve missed you! And just to show that I haven’t spent the last couple of weeks sitting on the sofa eating crisps (well, not all of them), I’ve got a brand new Explorer Beastie adventure to share over the next two posts. Where did we go? Well, when the sun breaks through the rainclouds here in Dublin, one of the nicest places to be is the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland.
So, if you go down to the woods today… … You’ll see BEASTIES!
Explorer Beastie wasn’t the only monster in the gardens that day, either. Check out this spooky tree we found, with what looks like eyes all over its trunk!
Our Botanic Gardens aren’t especially big – they’re nowhere near as massive as Kew Gardens, for instance. But there are lots of quiet hideaways and secret corners where a little monster can relax and enjoy being outdoors among the plants.
We both really liked the Chaintent, with its human-sized benches and twisty wisteria branches for a Beastie to climb! Even as summer here draws to a close, there are plenty of bright blooms to enjoy too. The hydrangeas are very much in flower! Next, we made our way down to the lily pond. There are still enough lily pads on the surface that Explorer Beastie figured he could cross to the other side by walking over them, but I encouraged him to use the picturesque bridge instead. And further on… HERE BE MONSTERS!
Monster trees, that is. I’m not exactly sure what species it is – I couldn’t see a sign or tag near it. Anyone want to help us out here?
As I tried to figure out the identity of the mysterious giant tree, Explorer Beastie decided to have a go at climbing it. I think we’re going to be here a while.
So, I headed off to take a look at the herbaceous border. It’s a riot of colour at this time of year, and is humming with insects making the most of the last days of summer.
Wait, what’s that? It’s a bit hard to see among all those yellow flowers but… Yes, it’s a BumbleBeastie!
I followed her until she landed on a nice purple thistle, where I could get a clearer photo. Then Explorer Beastie found us.
“Hello! Want to join us for lunch?”
“Love to, but I’m soooooo busy! You’re welcome to stick around while I work though… If you can keep up!”
She wasn’t kidding. She must have visited every flower in that border! We even met some of her six-legged insect counterparts along the way. We left her tucking into some lamb’s ear – a favourite bee treat! I wonder who else might be in the Botanic Gardens today? You’ll have to join us next time to find out!
PS If you can keep up with their hectic pace, you can adopt a BumbleBeastie of your very own. Have a look in the Beastie Store!
Hey there everyone! And, as hinted at in last week’s post, welcome to “What I Did During Lockdown, Part Two”! It turns out that tierneycreates Beastie wasn’t just shopping online… She was also on the lookout for love! And since Human Tierney recently celebrated her own engagement, what better time to pair her monster counterpart up with a good lookin’ Beastie fella?
Well hello there! He’s certainly dressed to impress, in a crisp white t-shirt and hand-embroidered baseball cap. Let’s get a closer look at that, shall we?
Just like human Tierney’s beau, this guy is showing some love for the Denver-based Colorado Avalanche ice hockey team… And how could any monster maker resist a team logo that incorporates a Bigfoot foot? I used 100% wool felt for the hat body, then appliquéd the large blocks of colour before embroidering in the finer details.
Hmmm… I wonder what else this woolly monster has in common with his human counterpart?
Well, it looks like he might be a dab hand (or paw) in the kitchen! Yum! I’d almost eat this myself… If it wasn’t entirely made out of wool. The portion is probably better suited to a Beastie-sized appetite anyway. Are you hungry, Mr Beastie? “Well sure… But in this shirt?”
Oh, good point. Here, pop your favourite cooking apron back on. Much better! And how about a small digestif to round off the meal? It seems our Beastie friend is something of a bourbon connoisseur, and only the finest whisky will do – Monster’s Mark!
This tasty tipple is presented in a bottle with hand-embroidered label, embroidered felt seal and needle-felted “wax”-dipped top!
It will also be the perfect accompaniment to… Poker night!
Here we go! He’s sitting at the card table, we’ve dealt the cards… And wow, he’s a high roller! Those are $100 chips he’s betting with!
I think we should call it, and take a look at that hand. It doesn’t get much better than that – a royal flush! And it looks like romance may indeed be on the cards… He’s got a pawful of hearts, featuring teeny-tiny embroidered portraits of himself, tierneycreates Beastie and Mikelet the (miniature) miniature Schnauzer.
So, any news you want to share with us? Ooooh, is that an engagement band on your magic magnetic paw? And rumour has it that there was one in the box for a certain lady monster too… Congratulations, Beasties! May you enjoy many happy years of warm woolly happiness together.
And on that high note, it’s time to wrap up for this week! Catch you again next Tuesday!
Hey there everyone! It’s a rainy old day here in Dublin, but even blustery showers can’t dampen my excitement about today’s post. This is essentially “What I Did During Lockdown, Part 1″… A monster haul of Beastie accessories for a very special woolly girl. Hey there, tierneycreates Beastie!
For anyone who hasn’t met her before, tierneycreates Beastie lives with Tierney of tierneycreates.com. She regularly pops up in Tierney’s blog posts (she recently took a trip to the library) and occasionally takes on the task of writing them herself when her human counterpart is busy.
Like a lot of people, tierneycreates Beastie went a bit crazy ordering stuff online while we were all sheltering in place.

Since the only person making Beastie accessories is yours truly, this meant I really had my work cut out for me!
First of all, she ordered some refreshments. And with many of my local off-licences offering home deliveries at the time, I decided it might indeed be a good idea to get in on that racket. Two bottles of Hop Monster IPA (a favourite Beastie tipple) coming right up! With libraries closed, getting her paws on some reading material was also high on tierneycreates Beastie’s to-do list. Human Tierney loves books about craft, personal development and home decor, so these titles should go down a treat. Next, she realised that this hat… … Needed a matching scarf. “But hey, it’s not winter just yet! I should probably update my summer wardrobe as well. Oooh, polka dots!” Into the cart it goes.
Fortunately there are always a few Beasties knocking around here at Beastie Towers, so I was able to tailor it to tierneycreates Beastie’s approximate measurements!
However, all this staring at the computer screen was beginning to take its toll.
“I know! I’ll treat myself to a smartphone… Then I can order from anywhere!”
Fair enough. One Beast-iPhone coming right up! Look how teeny it is! I have enough trouble trying to type on the human-sized ones. This super-slim model is made from felt with a shiny reflective ribbon screen so it looks the part.
Of course, tierneycreates Beastie isn’t just shopping for herself. So that her beloved miniature miniature Schnauzer Mikelet can join her on longer adventures… … She picked up a doggy backpack, just like the one Human Tierney uses to bring Mike the Miniature Schnauzer out and about! The top of the backpack is open with a drawstring so Mikelet can peek out and stay involved in the action. It also goes rather nicely with the sundress!
And finally, one of my most challenging Beastie accessories to date. She asked for… … A sewing machine!
This top-of-the-range miniature marvel is what every Beastie quilter dreams of. Bernina may make the creme-de-la-creme of human-sized machines, but if you’re a little woolly monster, a Beastnina is what you want to have on your craft table.
So, what the Beastie wants, the Beastie gets! But how on earth do you make one? Well, I began by building a framework from wire, and filled out the shape by sculpting it with needle-felted wool. Then I hand-stitched a tailored felt “skin” to go on top, so the machine would have the same smooth lines as the full-size version. Finally, the details were added with embroidery and appliqué. Phew!
Still, I bet it’ll help tierneycreates Beastie to start stitching up a storm in no time. I just hope she still has time to help Tierney with her blog posts every now and again!
Here’s the finished haul… … And I was delighted to get a picture of Miss Beastie looking very summery in her new outfit! Thanks so much to Tierney for this awesome project, and for enabling her Beastie’s online shopping addiction! For any of you who have also been (over)indulging in a little mail-order lately, you can confess all in the comments below. We won’t judge!
We’ll be back next Tuesday with another new Beastie for you to meet – stay safe and see you then!
Hi there everyone! I have to say, it’s not really hiking weather out there today… But I’m sure the new Beastie we’re about to meet would happily give it a try anyway. After all, I did kit her out with everything she could possibly need for a day of strolling in the hills!
So, say hello to Hiker Beastie! I created this Beastie as a very special birthday gift for an active lady who loves to spend time in the great outdoors. And since she lives in Scotland, I needed to make sure the weather never had a chance to rain on her parade (or hiking trail). That’s why she’s wearing a very fetching handknitted bobble hat… … A rain jacket with handy hood… (Did you notice the teeny embroidered zips?)
… And a pair of go-anywhere hiking boots. I stitched some felt treads to the soles of these boots to make them extra-grippy, and finished them with some embroidery thread laces. Now she’s fully equipped from head to toe!
Well, almost. If she’s away for the day, she’ll probably need a backpack too. Et voila! This one is handstitched from 100% wool felt, and should hold everything she needs.
And when she’s not hiking…
… This Beastie has another hobby to keep her busy! We’ll need to lose the jacket for this part though. Why, you ask? Well, this Beastie lady also enjoys a game of shinty – a Scottish variant of ball-and-stick games like hockey, or the hurling we play here in Ireland. From what I could tell when I was doing my research, it can be pretty full-on… So this outfit will give her much more freedom of movement as she tears around the pitch!
Oh, I should probably provide her with a shinty stick so she can join in properly. Shinty sticks have a distinctive wedge-shaped head that sets them apart from the sticks used in hockey, hurling and other related sports like cammag (from the Isle of Man), bando (Wales) and Knattleikr (played by the Vikings in Iceland). In my quest to get the shape right, I was lucky enough to find this video of modern-day craftsmen making human-sized versions. I love how hands-on the process is!
Here’s my Beastified version – and our woolly friend holding onto it tightly with her magic magnet paws!
And one more thing…
Up a mountain or on the shinty pitch, life is more fun when you have a companion to share it with – right? And as a final touch, this Beastie has a four-legged friend to keep her company on her adventures.
This Beastie-sized pup is modelled on the pet pooch of our monster lady’s human counterpart, and is made from needle-felted merino and blue-faced Leicester wool.
Ready for walkies? I think so! Thanks to Anne for requesting this very special Beastification for her sister-in-law’s birthday!
And we’ll be back on Tuesday… Yes, Tuesday! With real life kicking back in again, I’m returning to my regular once-a-week blogging regime. If you’ve got a taste for past Beasties as a result of my lockdown Flashback Fridays though, you’ll find lots more in the website Gallery, or by scrolling through the Commissions category of the BeastieBlog.
No, not my sixteenth birthday! That’s longer ago than I’d even care to think about, thank you very much.
This post is actually about a very special creation for a customer who needed a unique, personal gift for her just-turning-sixteeen goddaughter. What better way to celebrate this important milestone than with a customised Beastie?
Let’s meet this VIM (Very Important Monster)! Hello there!
First of all, let’s talk about that hair. WOW! I had so much fun with this! I used two slightly different shades of pink to give the colour extra depth, and unwinding the strands to separate the individual plies produced this tumble of luxuriant curls. Then a combination of carefully-placed stitches and a little precision styling with my needle-felting needle helped me to copy my human subject’s favourite swept-over-the-shoulder hairstyle.
(If only I could apply these techniques to my own hair!)
And while we’re on the subject of style, we’d better take a look at her dress next. Beasties love humans with a playful sense of fashion, and I knew I was on to a winner here… A girl who wears bold prints and whose trademark items of clothing are floral nighties? Perfect! I offered a couple of different styles and prints in the design sketch… … And as you can see, the long-sleeved version in a cute turquoise, green and cerise floral print with felt collar and buttons won out. Good choice! It really complements her hair and healthy blue complexion, don’t you think?
But appearances aren’t everything. A Beastie needs interests and hobbies! It’s ok though – we’ve got her covered. First, a hand-stitched science book to keep her brain ticking over… … And a paintbrush, so she can let her creative side shine through too. Finally, I copied her human counterpart’s cool glasses! As usual, they have real clear plastic lenses and are removable. However, with this pair, I developed a new technique for making glasses that allows me to slim down the frames a little.
They also make a stylish hair accessory. But hang on a second, Miss Beastie – don’t you have a birthday party to get to? Best get moving, you’re only sixteen once! I’d say her future is as bright as her hair – what do you reckon?
Thanks to Maria for requesting this super-fun project, and advising on the details!
And we’ll be back on Friday with another peek into the Beastie archives. See you then!
Hey there everyone! Summer has returned to Dublin – I think temperatures climbed to their highest heights of the year so far yesterday! And that’s got me in a holiday sort of mood… So I thought I might use this week’s Flashback Friday to revisit some of my favourite “Beasties on tour” moments. Hopefully it will tide us over until we can all travel again!
Let’s start with Explorer Beastie’s trip to Germany in 2018… A rare example of a Beastie holiday where I was allowed to tag along. And thanks to the themed gardens in Düsseldorf’s Nordpark, you might have even thought we were briefly in Japan! Explorer Beastie does enjoy a bit of zen serenity now and again.
Paddy and Plunkett are also fond of an away trip. Here’s one of my favourite pictures of them, lurking in the tulips around Arundel Castle in Kent. While I was looking for this photo, I found some other travel souvenirs – pictures from Antonello and Tiziana Beastie’s visit to Abruzzo! And yes, that is a real live BEAR in the background! And speaking of dangerous exploits… One of my favourite Beastie holiday snaps of all time comes courtesy of Tammie Painter, who encouraged her Beastie Finn McSpool to try his paw at scuba diving whilst on holiday in Hawaii!
Extreme Underwater Beastie photo borrowed from tammiepainter.com
He wasn’t the only one having fun in the sun in Hawaii, either. Grim Reaper Beastie went there too! Doesn’t he look right at home among all that lava? Then again, holidays don’t have to be all non-stop action and dramatic scenery. They can also give you the opportunity to take a moment to pursue a favourite hobby… … Or just kick back and relax! Are you dreaming of getting away on holiday when things return to normal? Or are you planning a staycation in your favourite local hideaway? Be sure to tell us all about it in the comments!
We’ll be back on Tuesday with more monster mischief… Enjoy the weekend and we’ll see you all then!
Hey there everyone! The sun is shining here in Dublin, and I hope you’re all enjoying some fine weather in your part of the world too! It’s also nice to see life returning to something like normal in places – here in Ireland certain shops are starting to reopen, and we can now meet in groups of 4 or fewer. We are still being asked to stay at home as much as possible, but that’s ok with me… The Beasties are keeping me busy as usual. And it seems I’m not the only one! Last week I got a lovely update from Melissa and her Cookie Beastie… With pictures!
So, Melissa had just settled down to enjoy a nice cup of tea when… Hey there Cookie Beastie! Where did you spring from?
I suppose this little monster fancied a nice refreshing brew to go with that jellybean cookie. Tea and biscuits is always an irresistible combination. Also, check out the colour coordination – surely that’s no accident!
Not content with hijacking half of Melissa’s tea, Cookie Beastie thought it might be fun to take a tour of the garden… And pose for a few photos on the way. Check out this wall of cacti and succulents! I do love a good cactus, and it seems Beasties are no different. That said, it’s pretty hard to relax with all those prickles around… How about we find somewhere else to put our paws up for a minute?
This sunny spot looks perfect. Aaaaaaaah! Can there be any better place to spend a tea break?
Mind you, it’s not all laying back among the flowers here. During quarantine, it’s especially important to stay fit and healthy. Next stop – the gym! Um, you might have to put the cookie down if you’re to make any headway with those weights.
“What, really? Oh, okay… Maybe I’ll just spot you this time around, then?”
You know, that sounds like my kind of exercising!
A massive monster THANK YOU to Melissa… Not just for sending awesome Beastie pics, but also for being one of the essential workers who are keeping the cogs of their communities turning while the rest of us are staying safe at home. You rock!
Aaaand if you’re at home and in need of something to put a smile on your face, why not spend a quarter of an hour with The Book Owl? This is a new podcast series hosted by Tammie Painter, author and human in charge of wayward book-lovin’ Beastie Finn McSpool. Every couple of weeks, she explores a literary curiosity… And the most recent episode, about kids reading to dogs in libraries, is real feel-good stuff. Enjoy!
So, hopefully that little lot will see you through until Friday, when we’ll be back and revisiting some more Beasties from days gone by. See you then!
