Beastie Spa Day - Stuffing Transplant - CrawCrafts Beasties

How Explorer Beastie Got His Groove Back

Hi there Beastie friends! As you can see, I’m getting back to my usual blogging routine – hopefully Tuesday posts will once again be the norm after a couple of disrupted weeks!

Now, at the end of Sunday’s post, I mentioned Explorer Beastie’s beauty regime. You might be surprised that he even has one – perhaps you pictured him as a more rough-and-tumble kind of guy.
Explorer Beastie Takes a Tumble - CrawCrafts BeastiesI can’t imagine why that might be.

Anyway, for the last little while, he’s been feeling a bit… Flat. Life hadn’t literally knocked the stuffing out of him, but his adventurous ways were taking a toll on his insides, and he’d lost the winsome plumpness of his early years.
Beasties Age Too - CrawCrafts BeastiesPoor Explorer Beastie!

Fortunately, monster-making skills aren’t just good for creating new Beastie friends. They can also be applied to help cure serious Beastie medical conditions! And so, I formulated a surgical strategy…

Surgery Plans - CrawCrafts Beasties
Like all reputable surgeons, I sketched out my plan on the back of an envelope first.

…Then I performed my first ever stuffing transplant!

Afterwards, to help him during his recovery, I treated Explorer Beastie to a spa day. You know, to help restore his youthful vitality.

Now, Beastie beauty products are a little different to what we humans use…

Relaxing in the Bubbles - CrawCrafts BeastiesWhiter teeth and a nice clean beanie hat were just an added bonus!

Then, it was time to snuggle up in a big cosy towel and dry off.

Finally, before I go – thanks to Melissa for sharing this pic of Cookie Beastie on Twitter last week – ain’t she a cutie?

Explorer Beastie’s Easter

Hello everybody! Sorry we’re a little late this week… We’ve been off enjoying ourselves over the Easter (or BEASTer) break! Still, the upside is that I had a camera handy for most of it – care to see some holiday snaps?

Our first full day away was last Saturday, and we spent it in style… Touring the Echlinville Distillery!
Echlinville Distillery, Easter 2019 - CrawCrafts BeastiesThis boutique distillery is proud of its small size, and the owners are eager to keep as much of their production in-house as possible. That means using locally-grown grain as the base for their gin, whiskey, vodka and poitín, distilling and bottling everything in that cool-looking building in the photo above… And even designing their own specialised equipment to help the process along!

Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed to take photos inside the buildings… You’ll just have to take the tour yourselves! But I did capture Explorer Beastie admiring the orchard…
Explorer Beastie and the Echlinville Apples - Easter - CrawCrafts BeastiesThose apple trees are pretty special – they’re descendants of a variety created for the original owners of the land where the distillery stands! They’ve a bit of growing to do yet, but I’m sure the Echlinville folks are already dreaming up fun things to make from those apples.

Also in the grounds… This!

That’s an original Soviet T34 tank from the Second World War. What’s it doing in the grounds of the distillery? Well, it turns out that the owner is also quite into his military history… And he’s hoping to eventually open a museum here. Our guide told us that there will be more tanks joining this one, plus some exhibits about more local historical events too.

Unfortunately they didn’t leave the keys in the tank, so we weren’t able to take it for a test drive. But with the tour complete, it was time for SAMPLES!

And look, an old Beastie friend is joining us!
Beastie Easter Gin Tasting - CrawCrafts BeastiesHey there, Garcia Beastie! Loyal BeastieBlog readers may remember this fuzzy little guy as one of my very early commissions. The post where I introduce him is still knocking about here if you want to see all his accessories.

Now lads… That’s a human-sized serving you’re working with there! Maybe go easy on it?
Beasties Misbehaving... Again - CrawCrafts BeastiesToo late. I suppose it’s for the best that Garcia Beastie left his skis at home today!

Luckily, Explorer Beastie’s antics on Saturday didn’t stop him enjoying his Easter egg on Sunday.
Beaster Eggs - CrawCrafts BeastiesThen the sun kept on shining all day… And Easter Monday too! Time to catch some rays.
Bank Holiday Sun - CrawCrafts BeastiesOf course, you can’t count on the sun to stick around in these parts. So when we went to the beach on Tuesday…

Exploring the Beach - CrawCrafts BeastiesNext, a little break to sit and watch the world (and some of the local bird life) go by. A perfect end to a relaxing holiday!

And join us again next week, when I’ll be revealing the secrets of Explorer Beastie’s beauty regime!

No, really.

See you then!

Beastie Fun in the Sun

Hello there everyone, and happy Tuesday to you all! It’s a beautiful sunny day here in Dublin, and the clear blue skies have me thinking about all the amazing Beastie travel pics I’ve been sent (and taken myself) over the last few years. The BeastieBlog archive is pretty vast at this point, and it’s a shame to leave those old posts just sitting there, right? So I thought I’d take a wander down sun-soaked memory lane – care to join me?

Explorer Beastie is up for it, anyway. Here he is enjoying an unusually warm day (for Ireland!) in Carlingford in 2016.
Explorer Beastie Chooses A Sunny Spot - CrawCrafts BeastiesAside from catching some rays in the garden, this trip also saw us exploring a forest inhabited by fairies and giants! If you’re new to the BeastieBlog, you can read the full story here.

2016 was a great year for Beastie travel. One of my favourite sets of photos came from Grim Reaper Beastie, who found himself among the Mayan ruins at Tulum and Coba in Mexico!

Next up – Fairy Princess Beastie takes a trip to Germany’s longest suspension bridge! It was a bright, sunny autumn day… But would a Beastie and her human friend be brave enough to cross this long, narrow bridge suspended 100m above the valley floor? Find out here!
At The Bridge - L&P Döring/CrawCrafts Beasties

And Paddy and Plunkett are no strangers to a bit of fun in the sun, either! They’ve often stowed away with some obliging human voyagers in search of warmer climes. One of my all-time favourite P&P holiday photos has to be… THIS ONE!
Paddy, In Search of the Perfect Tan - H Crawford/CrawCrafts BeastiesOoops! Perhaps I should have included a “gratuitous Beastie nudity” warning before publishing that… Moving swiftly on!

Now, when the sun is blazing down and it’s sweltering hot out, a dip in the sea is the perfect way to cool off. Well, it is for people… But do Beasties get to enjoy this too? If you’re Finn McSpool, then the answer is a resounding YES. His underwater exploits in Hawaii broke new ground (or water) for Beastie travel adventures!

And finally, delving waaaaay back into Beastie history… Does anyone remember this one? On a bright spring day in March 2014, Victorian Explorer Beastie scaled Bray Head, just south of Dublin city, to enjoy the scenery!Bray Head
Wow, what a view! Although, if memory serves, his little stripey legs were a bit tired after the long uphill haul, and he may have hopped in my bag for the return journey!

How about you? Are there any favourite Beastie adventures from days gone by that you’d like to revisit? Or maybe you’ve been lucky enough to snap a mischievous monster at play near you? Either way, be sure to tell us all about it in the comments!

Aaaaand we’ll be back with fresh NEW Beastie adventures next Tuesday, so be sure to join us then!

Explorer Beastie with Spring Daffodils - CrawCrafts Beasties

Early Spring at Beastie Towers!

Did you know that, according to the Celtic calendar, Spring in Ireland begins at the start of February? Most of the time, it doesn’t feel particularly Spring-like until well into March (especially last year!) but 2019 has been so mild. Explorer Beastie’s miniature daffodils have been blooming for a couple of weeks already!
Explorer Beastie with Spring Daffodils - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd with the warming temperatures and gradually lengthening days, activity levels have been picking up a little too! Today I wanted to share some of the extra-curricular activities that have been keeping me and the Beasties busy this past while.

A Spring Clean… For My Skills!

Aaaah, the sewing machine! My old nemesis. For too long, your ways have eluded me… In fact, slow as it is to stitch seams by hand, it has often seemed quicker than the usual sew it-rip it-resew it-rip it process that usually accompanies a stint on the machine.
Vintage Singer Sewing Machine - CrawCrafts BeastiesBut this year, I decided enough was enough. Let’s master those sewing machine demons! So I signed up for a class with The City Seamstress. I’ve already picked up some valuable tips that have made my work better (and helped my confidence, too) and right now I’m working on a project which is neeeearly finished, so I should hopefully be able to share pics very soon!

And as well as learning, I’ve been teaching too! January was a really busy time for my knitting classes – it’s like half of Dublin decided to put “learn to knit” at the top of their New Year’s Resolutions list! This spurred me on to tackle something I’ve been meaning to do for a while… Make up a really easy sweater pattern.
A Super-Easy Srping Sweater - CrawCrafts BeastiesYou see, a lot of students want to take on the challenge of making a jumper quite early on… But even the simplest-looking designs often have next-level knitting skills lurking in the pattern. And while some new knitters thrive on being thrown in at the deep end, more than a few are put off by the idea of fancy shaping techniques, decorative seams and the alphabet soup of abbreviations that crop up in many “beginner” patterns.

So, what you see in the picture is sleeve #2 of an almost-finished sweater of… Just rectangles! And yes, the design is probably far from original, but this version is mine! That makes it easier to guide people through all the pre-knitting preparations, like sizing and choosing yarn, and also to suggest tweaks if anyone wants to put their own stamp on it.

Also, I get a new sweater.

But it can’t be all work and no play, of course. There has to be time for a…

Spring Breaaaaaaaak!

That means a quick trip out to Donegal with my brother, now pretty much a February tradition. This is the third year we’ve hit the road and headed about as far north-west as it’s possible to go in Ireland without falling into the sea. You can catch up with the epic 2017 and 2018 travelogues if you missed them!

Explorer Beastie sat this one out – well, he had to look after his garden, and I really think he should agree to take a bath before he goes on any more location photoshoots – but we did have company for the trip…
A Furry Friend for Our Road Trip - CrawCrafts Beasties… And I couldn’t resist leaving a monster behind on one of the beaches, just to prove I’d passed through!
Rock Monster in Donegal - CrawCrafts BeastiesWe also had a delicious lunch at Nancy’s Barn in Ballyliffin… Well worth a visit if you find yourself in this part of the world!

And Finally…

A few Beasties have been helping author (and Beastie Buddy) Tammie Painter to celebrate the launch of her latest book, Domna Part Two: The Solon’s Son!

//www.instagram.com/embed.js

This novel is the second in a series of six about ambitious, resourceful Sofia Domna, whose plans are knocked sideways by a chance encounter in her local marketplace. If you haven’t discovered this series yet, you really should… And the best bit is that Tammie (generous to a fault) is giving away the first novel, The Sun God’s Daughter, to anyone who signs up to her mailing list. Go on, you know you want to!

Well, that’s all the news from here… What have you all been up to? Is Spring springing where you are? Be sure to tell us all about it in the comments!

Sloes Featured - Foraging - CrawCrafts Beasties

A Beastie Foraging Feast!

Hello there Beastie friends! How was your weekend? Ours turned out to be surprisingly fruitful, when we went for a late autumn walk in the Irish countryside! Join us as we head out foraging in nature’s larder… Well, if Explorer Beastie can be coaxed out of the flower beds.
Autumn Flowers - CrawCrafts Beasties

A Sloe Day for Foraging

We honestly weren’t expecting great results from our wanderings… Although it’s been a super year for blackberries, birds and other free food enthusiasts had long since stripped the best pickings from the hedgerows. And our other quarry, the humble sloe, didn’t seem to enjoy the unusually warm weather this summer as much as the rest of us did. All our usual picking spots were turning up bare!

But fortunately, Explorer Beastie stopped to check out this cushiony bit of moss growing among the spines of a blackthorn…
Moss in the Hedge - CrawCrafts Beasties… And turned up some sloes clinging to the branches of its neighbour!
Foraging for Sloes! CrawCrafts BeastiesFor those of you who are unfamiliar with sloes, they’re the fruit of the blackthorn tree. And although they’re related to plums and damsons, and look mighty like blueberries, you reeeeealllllly don’t want to just eat them. They’re unbelievably bitter, and biting into one will leave your mouth feeling like you’ve been wandering in the Sahara for a week! No, we have other plans for these… More on that later.

Continuing with our walk, we decided to check in on some four-legged friends further along the road.
Friends in the field - CrawCrafts BeastiesThis little lady calf was especially keen to come over and say hello. But wait a sec, what’s she spotted over there?
Curious Calf, Foraging Helper! CrawCrafts Beasties– GASP! –

It’s a monster mushroom!
Monster Mushroom ahoy! CrawCrafts BeastiesWhat a beauty! And we were so sure that mushroom season was over!

“Look! It’s nearly the same size as me!”
Monster with Monster Mushroom - CrawCrafts BeastiesYum! But what should we do with it?

Back in my own Unphotogenic Kitchen…

Cutting Mushrooms - CrawCrafts BeastiesExplorer Beastie supervised while I chopped the prized fungus into wedges, and we made up the numbers with a couple of large brown mushrooms from the greengrocer.

Then, with a little monster magic (and an onion, some ready-made puff pastry, crème fraîche, gruyere cheese and a smidge of bacon)… TA DAAAAH!
Dinner - A Foraging Feast! CrawCrafts BeastiesMushroom tart à la Beastie! It was really rather good, even if it didn’t photograph particularly well. I don’t think the food bloggers out there have to worry about this turning into a cookery blog anytime soon!

And as for those Sloes…

Those other fruits of our foraging trip are destined to become sloe gin!

These bitter little berries undergo a marvellous transformation when they’re soaked in gin, sweetened with sugar and left alone for 3 months. (But then again, who wouldn’t respond favourably to such treatment? Ha!)

The end result is a fruity, bright pink liqueur which is delicious by itself, or topped up with sparkling water and some ice. I’ve been making a batch every autumn for the last few years, and I’ve amassed quite a collection. Feast your eyes on the wondrous Gin Gallery!
Gin Gallery - Foraging - CrawCrafts BeastiesAs you can see, every batch gets a pun-tastic name. Previous (long since departed) incarnations include Sloe Learner and Sloe Train to Oblivion, and that Vintage Reserve on the left is now a whopping 5 years old! Apparently the brew improves with age, so I’m going to see how long I can keep it.

But this year, a name is yet to suggest itself. Oh no! But I know there are a few of you out there who share my appreciation of a good/bad pun, so I’m opening the naming question to the floor. Leave your choicest boozy puns in the comments, and my favourite will grace the bottles of the 2018 batch!

Have any of you enjoyed foraging success this autumn? Share your food-for-free stories with us below. And also, pleeeeeeeease be super-careful when foraging for yourselves, especially where mushrooms are concerned!

Good hunting!

Autumn in Dublin's Parks - CrawCrafts Beasties

Dublin in Autumn

Hello there, Beastie friends! How’s your week been? I’m juggling a couple of ongoing monster projects just now, but unfortunately none of them are at a publishable stage yet! So for today’s post, I thought I would share some pics of Dublin’s parks in their autumn finery instead. Care to wander with us?
Lime Walk in Autumn - CrawCrafts BeastiesLiving in the middle of a city is great – if you feel like walking, there’s always somewhere interesting to walk to. And in Dublin, we’re lucky to have several beautiful parks right in the city centre! So anytime I’m in town, I’ll usually find an excuse to take a toddle around St Stephen’s Green, at least. It’s probably Dublin’s most famous and busiest park, since it’s just a stone’s throw from Grafton Street, one of our main shopping districts.

Explorer Beastie is posing in one of my favourite bits of St Stephen’s Green – an avenue of lime trees that leads away from the main gate. Lush and green in spring, shady and cool in the summer… And in Autumn, a riot of yellow leaves!

We would have taken more pictures here, but the downside of being in a popular park is that a Beastie could easily get trampled underfoot. Time to cut across to the far gate and seek out a hidden gem only a few streets away!

Much better! This is Iveagh Gardens… It may not be a truly secret garden, but it certainly feels that way. Two of the three main entrances are set well back from the street, and the park is full of quiet walks and crumbling statues.
Statue at Iveagh Gardens - CrawCrafts BeastiesExplorer Beastie also likes this big heap of rocks, which provides the perfect mountaineering challenge for an adventurous Beastie!

On this walkabout, we had an ulterior motive – to audition potential candidates for a holly-packed Beastie calendar page for December! Explorer Beastie threw himself into the challenge with gusto – braving the prickly leaves to help you all to better organise your busy lives.
Holly Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesActually, those prickles don’t seem to be bothering him much at all…

We even had a chance to meet some of the park’s residents…

See you again next week for more monster adventures!

Wrapping up the Year – Last of the Calendar Pages!

Hey there everybody! OK, I know I said that this would be ready yesterday, but due to some computer-related issues, I totally ran out of Friday. Who would have thought that uploading crazy giant image files and trying to play around with them would really slow down the editing process?! Ah well, we’ll chalk that one up to experience. Anyway, even with that little hiccup, I’ve managed to cobble together the final installment of this year’s free downloadable calendar pages!
Calendar October to December - CrawCrafts BeastiesYou can grab yours right now, from our online store!

I’ve put them together as one file, so you only need to download once. After that, you can print them all out together, or page-by-page as you need them! And as usual, you can ignore the part of the order form that asks for your postal address – all we need to deliver this deeeelightful free goodie to your inbox is your name and email.

If you don’t get your download immediately, check your spam or promotions folder.

And here’s what you’ll get…

October

October View - Calendar Page - CrawCrafts BeastiesGrab those crayons… It’s another colour-it-yourself bonanza! Hallowe’en is still my favourite festival, so October’s page is all about the best bits of the spookiest night of the year. Sparklers and toffee apples were the highlights of Hallowe’en as a kid – am I the only one who mysteriously lost their appetite after eating all the sticky sugar shell from the toffee apple?

Pumpkin carving is a more recent addition to the festivities, and I’m making up for my apple-dodging younger days by using all the pumpkin’s insides once the carving is done. Pumpkin soup and roasted pumpkin seeds? Yes please! As for the broomstick aerobatics… Well, maybe someday.

Of course, we’d love to see your finished calendar pages, so don’t forget to share! Use #Beastiegallery on Instagram and Twitter so we don’t miss your masterpieces!

November

November View - Calendar Page - CrawCrafts BeastiesExplorer Beastie is back for November! We took a lovely sunlit wander through some of Dublin’s parks yesterday, and I thought this photo of him kicking through the fallen leaves and conkers would be a nice reminder of how lovely autumn can be. Yes, the days are getting shorter and it’s not as warm as it was… But when the sun shines, there’s no finer time of year!

December

December View - Calendar Page - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd finally… Well, I wanted to avoid getting full-on Christmassy, so Explorer Beastie and I braved the spines of a selection of local holly trees to bring you a nice cheery picture to wrap up the year. And after all that prickliness, the best of the bunch proved to be this smooth-leaved one!

So, that’s it – 2018 calendar pages complete! And I’d be interested to know how this experimental calendar delivery method has worked out for you. From my end, it’s been a bit more work through the year… But not having to deal with under/over supply, delivery problems and getting overcharged at the Post Office has been brilliant! What do you reckon? Let me know in the comments!

Oh, and we’ll be back on Tuesday with the second part of my latest Beastification – I promise!

Explorer Beastie at Glengesh Pass, Donegal - CrawCrafts Beasties

Coast to Coast

Hey there everybody! It’s great to be back after our little blogging break – and Explorer Beastie and I even had time to squeeze in a quick adventure while we were away! On Saturday, we took a trip right across the top of the island of Ireland to spend an afternoon in the beautiful rugged countryside around Glencolmcille in Co. Donegal.

Of course, when you find yourself out that way, it’s impossible not to stop at Nancy’s pub in Ardara for a tasty lunch. You’ll have to go a long way to find better fish dishes, and washing it down with a glass of their farmhouse cider is a must! I would have photographed my food for you all to enjoy, but I fell upon it like a pack of ravenous wolves… So here’s Explorer Beastie enjoying the cosy ambience instead.

Feeling pleasantly full, it was time to continue our journey… Next stop Glencolmcille! Although we did have to take a quick pause along the way to enjoy the dramatic landscape at Glengesh Pass…

Then, back in the car…

Beastie Barrow! CrawCrafts BeastiesWe had high hopes of exploring the Glencolmcille Folk Village, but we’d arrived a little too late to be able to take a proper look around before closing time. We were still able to take a peek over the wall though, and it’s going on the to-do list for our next visit!

And hey, what’s that over there?
Travelling by Map - CrawCrafts BeastiesLooks like Explorer Beastie has found a quicker way to travel around Ireland in a day.

“I can see our house from here!”

He also spotted some more woolly friends from his lofty perch. So, we had to go and take a closer look!

Monsters and Magical Houses

Happy Friday, everyone! And it’s not just the end of the week – today we’re also on the very last leg of our recent Germany trip. But I think I’ve saved the best for last, because it turns out that Germany is just full of the kind of cute monsters that the Beasties and I love so much! We’ll meet them later in the post.

First, let’s check out that magical house I mentioned!
Hundertwasserhaus Waldspirale, Darmstadt - CrawCrafts BeastiesHow’s THAT for a cool place to live?

This very unusual building is called the Waldspirale (“Forest Spiral”), and it’s in Darmstadt, a city just south of Frankfurt. It was designed by an Austrian-born New Zealand artist and architect called Friedensreich Hundertwasser, and the best part is that it’s not just for show. Yes, people actually do live here!

Apart from the glowing gold domes on the roof, I also loved the gentle layers of colour, smooth curved surfaces and the proliferation of plants everywhere.Views of Hundertwasser Waldspirale - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd these things are recurring themes in Hundertwasser’s designs – he was very much against straight lines and standardisation. This is especially obvious when you see the staircase in the central courtyard!
Stairs at Hundertwasserhaus Waldspirale - CrawCrafts Beasties

So, if I ever feel the need to relocate Beastie Towers to Germany, I reeeeeeallllly hope they have a spot for us in here! Oh, and fun fact – while you’ll find most of Hundertwasser’s buildings in Germany and Austria, there are a few others scattered in choice locations across the world. They include a winery in the Napa Valley in the US, an incineration plant in Osaka, Japan, and… A public toilet block in Kawakawa, a small town in the northernmost region of New Zealand!

Now, who wants to meet some monsters? Because trust me, they were everywhere! We found monster street art…

Beastie Friends - CrawCrafts BeastiesCheers for joining us on our travels – and also a massive THANK YOU to all the Beastiebuddies who made our German trip so much fun!

We’ll be back on Tuesday with more monster shenanigans… In the meantime, are your paws taking you anywhere interesting this weekend? Be sure to tell us all about it in the comments!

Old Meets New in Frankfurt - CrawCrafts Beasties

Fine Art Fun in Frankfurt!

OK, so the last couple of posts here on the BeastieBlog have been a little on the wild side…
Wild Frankfurt - CrawCrafts Beasties, Beastie HQ… But there’s more to Frankfurt than its zoo, y’know! Today, we’re going to take a trip into the city centre in search of some culture.

Even walking through the streets of Frankfurt was an interesting experience – everywhere we turned, it seemed that old-fashioned buildings were rubbing shoulders with the towering glass skyscrapers that you’d expect to see in one of Europe’s main financial centres.
Old Meets New in Frankfurt - CrawCrafts BeastiesThat said, there’s a good chance that many of these classical-looking buildings aren’t much older than their shiny modern neighbours. Like many cities in the industrial Rhineland region, Frankfurt was heavily bombed in the Second World War, and its renowned medieval town centre was hit especially hard.

This blend is clearer as you approach the river Main…
Explorer Beastie Blocking the View of the Main - CrawCrafts Beasties…Well, it would be if a certain Beastie wasn’t hogging centre stage! The Main cuts the city neatly in half, and since we needed to be on the other side, we made a beeline for that bridge up ahead.

Explorer Beastie on Eiserne Steg, Frankfurt - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd we chose our crossing point well! This is the Eiserner Steg (Iron Bridge), a pedestrian bridge which is a great place to stop and admire the cityscape…
Love Locks on Eiserner Steg, Frankfurt - CrawCrafts Beasties… Or, if you’re Explorer Beastie, to hang out among the love locks.

On the other side, we wandered down the riverbank for a while – mostly because I am atrocious at navigation and took a wrong turn at the end of the bridge. I’m glad I did though, because otherwise we would have missed this place!
Portikus, Frankfurt, From the Riverbank - CrawCrafts BeastiesIt looks like a magical castle, lost in a leafy forest… But this unusual building actually houses a contemporary art gallery called Portikus. Portikus has had a couple of homes around Frankfurt since it was founded in 1987, the first of them being the portico of the old public library building, which is where the name comes from. The gallery finally moved into its first purpose-built home in this tower on an island in the Main in 2006.

We’ll have to save our visit for another day though, because we already had a plan! Onwards!

And here we are. Look, someone’s even opening the door for us.
Explorer Beastie at Staedel, Frankfurt - CrawCrafts BeastiesThis is the Städel Museum, home to a vast art collection that includes everything from old masters to contemporary artists from Germany and further afield.

We thought we’d start at the beginning, with the Old Masters on the top floor. That meant tackling some stairs!
Climbing up to the Old Masters - CrawCrafts BeastiesPhew! Poor Explorer Beastie needed a bit of a rest after that lot… Although he pretended he was just examining this wall of portraits.
Old Masters at the Staedel Museum, Frankfurt - CrawCrafts BeastiesThe Old Masters gallery is brimming over with incredible paintings, some of them dating back to the late Middle Ages! Since I know some of you will be reading this over lunchtime, I’ll spare you the gory crucifixion and martyrdom images that seemed to so inspire artists at that time, and share this picture of Explorer Beastie examining “The Geographer” by Vermeer instead.

And speaking of lunch… As we made our way onwards into the modern era, we stumbled upon a Renoir!
Renoir at the Staedel Museum - CrawCrafts BeastiesThat’s it on the left – and how appropriate that it’s called “La Fin du Déjeuner” (After the Luncheon)! But if you’re still hungry, perhaps I can tempt you with some Mondspargel (Moon Asparagus)…

We also found a scene that looked mighty familiar in this Max Beckmann painting…
A Familiar View - CrawCrafts BeastiesHey, didn’t we just cross that bridge earlier? I suppose we were lucky that the river below wasn’t full of ice, as it is in the painting. Brrrr!

This brought us nearly to the present day. So after a quick photo opportunity at John Armleder’s Mirror Mosaic wallpiece…
Mirror Wall at Staedel, Frankfurt - CrawCrafts Beasties… We headed underground to check out the Städel’s contemporary collection.

Out of all the pieces on display, Explorer Beastie particularly wanted to have his photo taken with this Rosemarie Trockel piece – can you figure out why?
Explorer Beastie Appreciates Art - CrawCrafts BeastiesNo, its nothing to do with the reference to the 90s… Although that was always going to catch my eye! Here, look a little closer…
Closeup - Who Will Be In In '99, Rosemarie Trockel - CrawCrafts BeastiesIt’s knitted! Explorer Beastie found this particularly inspiring – he says he never realised art was in the very fabric of his being. Now he’s planning his first solo show.

So, since he had work to do, there was just time for one last shot in this awesome space…

And believe me, we only scratched the surface of this incredible museum… So if you ever find yourself in Frankfurt, make sure it goes at the top of your to-see list!

We’ll be back on Friday with the last of our Germany photos, so be sure to join us for a monster-filled trip finale. See you then!
