Beasties For OLIVE The Family!

Hey there everybody, and happy Friday to you all! Now, earlier in the week I promised you new Beasties… So, new Beasties you shall have. And not just a couple, either… There’s a whole family of them waiting to meet you!

This project started when I met Lino from Olivieri’s Fine Italian Foods at a market just before Christmas. We got chatting, and I mentioned that as well as the gang of little knitted monsters hanging out on my stall that day, I also do requests. Fast forward a few months, and I’m sure you can imagine how delighted I was when he got back in touch and asked me to Beastify his entire family AND their faithful pooch!

I should probably introduce you to the man himself – or at least his Beastie counterpart!
Lino Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesI used a wool and alpaca yarn for his hair, and dressed him in a smart blue felt t-shirt and grey shorts.

And what’s that in his paw?
Beastie-Sized Olive Oil Bottle - CrawCrafts BeastiesIt’s a Beastie-sized bottle of olive oil! Lino has been running his family’s olive grove and farm in southern Italy since 2010, and he brings the oil he produces there back to Ireland to supply specialist food stores and restaurants across the country. His oils were even listed as being among the best available in Ireland in this article in The Irish Times last year! Definitely an achievement worthy of being celebrated in felt and teeny sewing, I’m sure you’ll agree. I made sure to include his company logo on the bottle’s label – accept no substitutes!

But hey, where’s the rest of the family?

Let’s meet the girls first, starting with… Florence Beastie!
Florence Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesThis sweet little monster lady seems to have a real way with animals… In many of the photos her dad sent me, there was usually a four-legged friend in there somewhere too. At his suggestion, I went hunting for a dress fabric with an animal print… And wow, that’s a tricky thing to find! Many of the fabrics I liked had an oversized design that would be totally lost on a Beastie-sized outfit. In the end, I found three designs that fit the bill, and this was the pick of the bunch – cute without being babyish, and the little pink birds sit nicely alongside her candy-coloured complexion.

I also had fun styling her hair!
Beastie Hairdressing - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd let’s take a proper look at that dress, too.
Florence Beastie's Dress - CrawCrafts BeastiesI changed my dress pattern up a bit for this project – I opted for a circle skirt instead of pleats, and I really like the neater line it gives. The dress closes with my new favourite hook-and-eye fastener, too!

Meanwhile, Beastie Florence’s sister Sophia Beastie is sporting an outfit that shows her love of dance! This was a first for me…
Sophia Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties…Voilà! One Beastie-sized leotard!
Beastie Leotard - CrawCrafts BeastiesPerfect for a day at the studio, or her next big stage performance! She looks happy, anyway.

And let’s not forget their brother, Lucca Beastie!

Lucca Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd after seeing a set of headphones in one of my reference photos, I thought I’d better Beastify those too!
Beastie-Sized Headphones - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd, last but not least, meet Lino Beastie’s partner Lynn Beastie!Lynn Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesThis is another new dress design – a sweet sundress inspired by one of the reference photos I used. It’s cut on the bias with a cute A-line shape, has a halterneck (well, as much as I could manage given that Beasties don’t have necks) and fastens with a ribbon at each shoulder.

Lego the Beastie Dog - CrawCrafts BeastiesWell, I did mention there was a dog! Hey there, Beastie Lego!

But this isn’t the end of the story for this monster family! Stop back in on Tuesday to find out where these Beasties are going, and why they have special feet…

Beastie Super Science!

Hello everybody! It’s a new week, and a new month… So I reckon we’d better have a new Beastie, too! Following my first experimental leap into the world of the Scientist Beastie
Scientist Beastie, Ready for Work! CrawCrafts Beasties…I got a request for another science-minded monster from the same customer, who wanted a special gift for a friend! And this one has even more of a twist, because…
A Scientist Beastie with a Superhero Twist, by CrawCrafts Beasties… She’s also a SUPERHERO!

Here, take a look! I made her some special accessories to keep her heroic alter-ego a secret… A hand-stitched felt mask and a silky cape to billow behind her as she flies off to fight evil.
Superhero Accessories for Scientist Supermum Beastie by CrawCrafts BeastiesI also created a personalised superhero logo to go on her jumpsuit, in colours that complement her outfit and her delicate rose-pink complexion. Brand identity is very important in the superhero universe, y’know.

But who’s this? Looks like there’s someone else here too… Although apparently they’re feeling a little bit shy. Can we maybe see that pretty face?
A Shy Baby Beastie - CrawCrafts Beasties, Beastie HQYay! That’s much better.
Supermum Scientist Beastie and her Baby - CrawCrafts BeastiesSupermum Scientist Beastie’s human counterpart is also a proud mum… So it only seemed right that this monster lady had a little girl Beastie of her own to keep her company. Ready for your closeup, Baby Girl Beastie?
Baby Girl Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties

She’s inherited her mum’s lovely pink skin tone, and her rich chestnut-coloured hair too. But hers is still baby-fine, so she loves to wear it in a cute pineapple ponytail on top of her head. I’ve completed her outfit with stripey legs and a sweet botanical-print cotton skirt!

But hey, where does the scientist bit come in?

Right now, actually. It’s time to head off to the day job! On with the lab coat…Scientist Beastie, Ready for Work! Handmade Personalised Gift by CrawCrafts Beasties… And grab a coffee along the way!
Beastie-Size Coffee, by CrawCrafts Beasties

Once she arrives, she’s got everything she needs for her working day, too. Supermum Scientist Beastie’s human counterpart is a biologist, so I made Beastified versions of some of the equipment she uses – a cell culture flask and a micropipette!
Beastie Size Lab Equipment, Handmade by CrawCrafts BeastiesI used a combination of sewing and needle felting techniques on these accessories to get the shaping just right… I even ended up stitching the flask with fishing line to keep it as close to transparent as possible!

Beastie Besties - tierneycreates Beastie and Dog by CrawCrafts Beasties

A New Addition to the Beastie Family!

Hello everybody! Wow, can you believe we’re nearly at the end of June already? It’s really flown in… But I figure we have just enough time to squeeze in another new Beastie post before we fully jump into July! So, allow me to formally introduce my latest Beastie commission – tierneycreates Beastie!
tierneycreates Beastie Face Closeup - CrawCrafts Beasties, Beastie HQSome of you may have met her already – she’s been very active on Tierney’s blog from the moment she arrived in her new home! But this project had me trying my hand at some new/long-neglected techniques which I’d like to share with you… And besides, it’s pretty much traditional to give every Beastie commission their 15 minutes of fame on the BeastieBlog! Now, on with the show!

Let’s start with the outfits, shall we? This little monster lady has a choice of two ensembles – a hand-stitched felt t-shirt in a burgundy shade that goes beautifully with her delicate orange complexion, and a cosy handknit Aran sweater for cooler days and possible return trips to her Irish homeland.
Beastie Aran Sweater and T Shirt, handmade by CrawCrafts BeastiesBeautifully modelled, tierneycreates Beastie!
tierneycreates Beastie Outfits, handmade by CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd like many of my recent commission pieces, she’s rocking an excellent pair of Beastie-size specs! Those are removable, by the way.
Beastie Miniature Glasses, by CrawCrafts BeastiesMy Mum also suggested that I start using props in my accessory photos to give you all an idea of their actual size. She’s full of good ideas!

Next, let’s talk hair. Oh, this hair! You see, I went a bit over the top trying to copy Human Tierney’s very awesome skinny dreads. Early in the Beastification process, I decided that the chunky wool I planned to use was entirely the wrong texture. But I figured that if I needle-felted it, it would become dread-ier… And I’d have an excuse to do some needle felting. Double win! Unfortunately, post-needle-felting, my crazy eyes detected too much fuzziness and uneveness in the strands. “I know! I’ll wet felt them to even them out!”

And once I’d started down that road, I couldn’t very well turn back. Cue several cycles of felting, waiting for the pieces to dry, attaching them and then realising I’d need more. Fortunately, we had a minor heatwave as my deadline approached, or I would have had to send tierneycreates Beastie out the door with wet hair!

That said, all this practice has really honed my wet felting technique… Something I plan to make use of in future projects! Oh, and here’s how those dreads turned out…
tierneycreates Beastie Dreads and Hat - Beastie HQAlso pictured is tierneycreates Beastie’s hand-knitted slouchy beanie hat, inspired by one Human Tierney recently made for herself, but with one slight difference – strategically-placed earholes to help hold it in place on her head!

Then, to complete the top-to-toe ensemble – check out those natty little Beastie boots!
Beastie Boots, Handmade by CrawCrafts BeastiesThe yellow stitching is modeled on my own beloved DM boots, but I chose a nice sky blue for the Beastified version to add a pop of colour!

Phew! Are you still with me? Because that’s not all.

This Beastie needs a bag!
Quilting Inspired Beastie Bag by CrawCrafts BeastiesHuman Tierney is a very talented quilter, and I wanted to reflect this in one of her accessories. So I selected some fabrics, cut teeny-tiny squares and pieced them together to create a miniature quilted panel, which I then stitched onto the exterior of a felt bag made to my usual pattern. This is the first quilting I’ve done in about 20 years – although the less said about my teenage efforts (which remain in my parents’ attic to this day) the better! And now tierneycreates Beastie can carry around her trusty laptop and library card in style!

So, that’s everything, right?
tierneycreates Beastie Accessories by CrawCrafts BeastiesNot quite! I think we forgot somebody…
Mikelet, the Super-Miniature Schnauzer, by CrawCrafts Beasties They’re a schnauzer household chez tierneycreates, so it only seemed right that this Beastie should have her own canine companion! And because the humans in the home already have a miniature schnauzer called Mike, this miniature miniature schnauzer has been named “Mikelet”!

Ready for walkies, Mikelet?

See you then!

A Beastie Birthday Bonanza!

It’s new Beastie day! So it must be… Friday? Yes, we’re breaking with tradition a little here, but after giving this very special pair a brief introduction in Tuesday’s post, I couldn’t wait a whole week to give you the guided tour! This cheerful monster couple were created as a very special birthday gift for author and long-term BeastieBlog reader Tammie Painter, and were requested by her husband as a surprise to round off their recent trip to Ireland.

So, after several top-secret design discussions, we decided to dress the Beasties in miniature versions of the outfits worn by their human counterparts on their wedding day!
Tammie and Mr Husband Beasties, by CrawCrafts BeastiesThat meant a sophisticated black dress with pin-tucked bodice and a floaty organza top layer for Tammie Beastie…

Tammie Beastie's Dress Closeups - CrawCrafts BeastiesMeanwhile, Mr Husband Beastie was cool and casual in a Hawaiian-style shirt and shorts.
Mr Husband Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesAlas, a true Hawaiian print comes up too large for Beastie-sized clothes! So I picked out a blue fabric that came as close as possible to the colours in the reference photos I worked from…

But wait a sec… What’s going on here?

How about a sketchbook and pen, to record the highlights of the trip?

Our Monster Day at Woollinn!

Happy Friday, everyone! And it’s been a double fun one for us, because we’ve just spent the day at Woollinn, Dublin’s festival of yarn!

I was helping out my buddy Diarmuid of S Twist Wool for the day, so there might be a bit of a bias in the photos…
S Twist Wool at Woollinn - CrawCrafts Beasties, Beastie HQAre you spotting a pattern yet? Still, I was pretty excited to see the new ranges he’s added since we last met up to talk yarn… And top of the list was definitely this spectacular batch of naturally-dyed Galway fleece! Check out those colours…
Natural Dye Yarns by S Twist Wool at Woollinn - CrawCrafts Beasties, Beastie HQAnother bonus is that the wool itself is ALL sourced from Irish farms… As you can see in the map in the photo above.

Oh, and of course there were a couple of Beasties knocking around!

It was also nice to catch up with another old friend – do any of you remember Ruari, the spinner’s assistant Beastie?

And, after a fun day helping out (and having a good squish at all the yarn, of course) I just had time to run upstairs and get a snap of all the stands from above!

A Magical, Mythical Monster!

Finally! I’ve stumbled on proof that unicorns are in fact real!

Except maybe they look a little different to what popular culture and centuries of mythologising might have led us to believe… Perhaps they look a little Beastie-er!
Full Length - Unicorn Beastie by CrawCrafts BeastiesHey there, Unicorn Beastie!

This sweet little monster maiden kinda knows that she’s special.
Unicorn Beastie Closeup - CrawCrafts BeastiesI mean, look at her magical multicoloured hair, for starters…
Unicorn Beastie Hair - CrawCrafts Beasties… And unlike most Beasties, she gets to have a TAIL!

Plus, she woudn’t be a real unicorn without…
Unicorn Beastie Horn - CrawCrafts BeastiesTaaa-daaaaah! There’s the evidence we needed.

And Unicorn Beasties have revealed themselves to be surprisingly similar to rhinos – which we know exist – in that their horn is made entirely from super-compacted hair (ie, carefully sculpted needle-felted wool). Even the most hardened uni-skeptic couldn’t argue with that logic.

Of course, being a Unicorn Beastie meant that this monster lady had a few very specific wardrobe requirements. But her tailor-made floral print dress was easily adapted to accommodate her long, flowing tail!
Unicorn Beastie Dress Collage - CrawCrafts Beasties, Beastie HQPerfectly stylish! Then I thought she’d also need a handy satchel to hold all her magical unicorn accessories…

Don't Kick It! H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties

Paddy, Plunkett and a Blast From the Past

Hey there everybody! I’m mixing it up a bit this week, thanks to a recent round of blog updates… Which you can check out in Tuesday’s post here, if you haven’t already!

I figure since you got your behind-the-scenes news on Tuesday, it’s only fair to get you ready for your weekend with a monster mini-adventure! So let’s join Paddy and Plunkett, who have stumbled on something curious in their home…
A Curious Discovery - Paddy and Plunkett, Beastie HQPlunkett reckons that since it’s sitting on a pedestal, it’s probably art and he shouldn’t touch it. Paddy, however, has never been the type to let pedestals or velvet ropes stand between him and a good time, so…

At least they’ve managed to establish that it’s a kiwi fruit. And this knowledge came in very handy later on, when they stumbled on one of my old craft projects!

Kiwi Fruit Style! H Crawford/CrawCrafts BeastiesI had heaps of fun making this back in the day… So much so that I made a handbag and shoe covers to match! Unfortuntely, kiwi fruit style is yet to catch on in mainstream fashion circles – but it sure makes a good Hallowe’en costume!

Oh, and Paddy decided he just HAD to try it on himself!

Looking good, Paddy!

What about you? Do you have any memorabilia from your school days, or old arts and crafts projects lurking around at home? If you find them this weekend, be sure to tell us all about them in the comments!

Aaaaand we’ll be back on Tuesday with a new Beastie to share! See you then…

Friday Social #3 – Community Crafting!

Hey there Beastie peeps! The weekend is very nearly here, so that means it’s time for another peek behind the scenes here at Beastie Towers… And this week, it’s all about community!
Brand New Barróg Beasties by CrawCrafts Beasties
As some of you may already know, I recently started teaching knitting classes at my local yarn store, The Constant Knitter. It’s a lovely yarny haven… That’s located a dangerously short toddle away from my home. The Constant Knitter, Francis Street - CrawCrafts Beasties
The shop is just one street over from St Patrick’s Cathedral, and as I mentioned in last week’s post, they got in touch to see if we’d like to host some free social crafting sessions in the weeks running up to the biggest event in their annual calendar… The St Patrick’s Day festival!

The idea was to make simple knitted, crocheted or wet-felted items that could be displayed at the Cathedral, and then given to visitors to take home as a memento of their visit. Oh, and it gave local people the chance to stop in and try out some new crafty skills… Or indulge in old favourites while drinking tea!

So, last week was the grand finale… The great giveaway! Unfortunately, by the time I arrived for my stint in the afternoon, quite a lot of the pieces had already been given away…

… But thanks to one of the other hard-working knitting groups, there were still plenty of little spring chickens to add to the lineup!

There were some bigger pieces to enjoy too, like these knitted landmarks of Dublin 8. This masterpiece included the gate of the old women’s hospital at The Coombe, the now-demolished Fatima Mansions flats and even a woolly Luas tram!

Local fibre artist Niki Collier also moved some pieces from her latest exhibition over to the Cathedral for the festival…

And after we wrapped up, I took the opportunity to have a quick look around the Cathedral on my way out.

Have a super weekend, everybody! We’ll be back on Tuesday with another monster adventure to share!

Ballerina Scientist Beastie, Personalised Handmade Gifts by CrawCrafts Beasties

Arts? Science? Why Choose?

Hey there Beastie friends! I hope you all had a super weekend… Especially any of you who were celebrating St Patrick’s Day on Saturday!

Today on the BeastieBlog, we’re weighing in on an issue that has been troubling humans for centuries – the ongoing battle between the arts and the sciences. And is it really true that if you have an interest in one, you’ll have no aptitude for the other?

For Beasties, the answer is a big HECK NO! Why would you ever limit yourself to just one? Meet this little monster lady, who just headed off to her new home last week.
A Pretty Beastie Face - CrawCrafts Beasties
With her long, flowing blonde locks and winning smile, she’ll look every inch the ballerina when she’s in her dance studio… This Beastie loves her ballet! So I made her a pair of pumps with ribbon laces…

As for you, where do you stand? Do you think of yourself as more of a scientist or an artist? Or, like this Beastie, do you make time for both? Let us know in the comments!

Pict in PA Beastie, a very special monster commission by CrawCrafts Beasties

A Picture-Perfect Beastie!

Well hello there! And despite the best efforts of the mean ol’ flu bug that temporarily disrupted my blogging last week, I’m now back in the land of the living. Hurrah! So, shall we celebrate by meeting a new Beastie? I think so!

Those of you who keep up with Laura at A Pict in PA might see some eerily familiar features in this Beastie face…
Anybody recognise this Beastie? CrawCrafts Beasties
I’ve been reading and enjoying Laura’s blog for a good while now… I love hearing about what she and her family have been up to (their summertime road trip posts are a particular favourite), and having a nosey through the latest additions to her art journals! I also try to keep up with her sister blog, Pict Ink, which is dedicated completely to her art and illustration projects.

So, as you can probably imagine, I was super-excited when Laura got in touch with me to request a Beastie friend of her very own… Well, excited with just a sprinkling of terror. Because doing a preliminary sketch for anyone is always a shot in the dark, but drawing for someone who I know has mad monster-drawing skills? Eeeeek! Fortunately, Laura’s blog was a veritable goldmine of ideas, and I was able to pick out some Beastie accessories that I thought might appeal to her wide-ranging interests!
Beastie Sketchbook - A Design for Laura - CrawCrafts BeastiesFirst, we had to pay woolly tribute to her go-to hairstyle of choice – the messy bun!
Beastie Hairstyle - A messy bun! CrawCrafts Beasties
Then, one of the things I really wanted to include in this Beastie’s kit was a camera. Like me, Laura still has a soft spot for “real” cameras, and I’d say she doesn’t go far without her trusty DSLR! Thanks to the wonders of the internet, I was able to find photos of the make and model she uses, and then Beastify it for her little monster friend.
A Beastie-Sized Camera, by CrawCrafts Beasties
I couldn’t resist taking a few extra shots to show you the camera’s key features – viewfinder, screen, prestigious “Kniton” branding…
Beastie Camera Features - CrawCrafts Beasties
…But my favourite bit is taking it apart! The lens and strap are both removable.
Taking the Beastie Camera Apart - CrawCrafts Beasties
Linking in neatly with Human Laura’s enthusiasm for photography is her love of film and musicals – and having read about the Dorothy-style red spangly slippers she picked up to wear on Oscars night, I thought a Beastie-sized pair might be a fun way to reflect her movie-buff side!
Ruby Slippers for Beastie Feet - CrawCrafts Beasties
Like the originals, they’re cosy and sparkly… and these ones close with snaps so they’re easy to take off! They’ll also help Laura Beastie to stand up on her own two feet.

Then there’s another clue to her fondness for the silver screen tucked away safely in here…
Beastie Bag for Laura Beastie - CrawCrafts Beasties
You can always be sure that when a Beastie gets a bag, there’s going to be stuff in there! In this case…
Inside the Bag - Miniature Book and Cinema Ticket by CrawCrafts Beasties
… It’s a hand-embroidered cinema ticket and book! There’s a little bit of Dublin history in here as well – the Screen was a small cinema in the city centre which closed in 2016. Now its name lives on in felt and teeny sewing! As for the book, Poe is one of Human Laura’s favourite authors… And how could I resist a name that lends itself so well to a yarn-based pun?

Wow – this is an epic one, isn’t it? But the final element of this Beastie’s outfit was – taaaa daaaah – a pair of felt-framed glasses. And they’re removable, too!
Beastie Glasses - CrawCrafts Beasties
Now she’s all ready for her first adventure!
Laura Beastie - Personalised Handmade Monster by CrawCrafts Beasties
All she has to do is to click her heels together three times and…
The Beastie Vanishes! CrawCrafts Beasties
… She’s away!

Thanks so much to Laura for commissioning this fun and challenging project! Hopefully we’ll see this Beastie popping up again the next time the Picts hit the road!

And speaking of hitting the road… I’d better get going myself! I’ve just realised I owe you all a March calendar page, so look out for that landing on the BeastieBlog shop in the next day or so.

Enjoy the rest of the week… And we’ll see you again on Tuesday with another new Beastie friend!
