Call me macabre, but there’s nothing I like better than wandering around cemeteries. They’re peaceful, interesting and a little creepy at the same time. And Dublin’s Glasnevin Cemetery is one of my favourites! Luckily it’s just across the river and up the road, in the inner suburbs on the north side of the city. Opened in 1832, it now covers an area of around 124 acres, and is the final resting place of 1.5 million of Dublin’s departed. On my most recent visit, I was accompanied by Goth Beastie. She looked strangely at home among the gravestones…

If you’re interested in Irish history, Glasnevin is a must-see. Many of the significant figures from our recent past are buried here, including Daniel O’Connell, whose campaign to allow Catholics to be offered the same right to a dignified funeral as Protestants led to the establishment of this very graveyard! An early-mediaeval style round tower stands on his tomb, and it can be seen from pretty much anywhere in the cemetery – it’s in the background of this photo…

Glasnevin is also home to some beautiful old trees, which line the pathways between the graves…

And there’s such a huge variety of styles in the monuments here, too! There are underground crypts…

…Traditional crosses…

…And some more understated ones. Goth Beastie was particularly taken with this one.

But it wasn’t long before the sun got too high in the sky for certain pale-faced Beastie ladies! There was just time for Goth Beastie to seek out a little cool shade before we headed for home…

How do you feel about graveyards? An interesting place to spend an afternoon, or too spooky for words?

Summer Colour Inspiration!

Summer in Ireland is a fleeting thing! Our unpredictable four-seasons-in-one-day climate means that a balmy evening can turn chilly in a heartbeat, and a day that starts out grey and drizzly can transform into a real scorcher by lunchtime. That’s why the very second we see a blink of sunshine here, we drop everything and rush outside to enjoy it… because in five minutes it could be pouring again!
So I’m sure you can understand why I was delighted to get a sunny morning while I was away in the west of Ireland with Explorer Beastie last week. And I brought my camera along to capture all the colours of the Irish countryside, which have inspired the colour palette for my latest round of Barróg Beasties. In case you’re new to the BeastieBlog, Barróg Beasties are a subspecies of Beastie native to Ireland. They’re made from Irish wool, and sport particularly Irish accessories! They get their name from the Irish word “Barróg”, which means “hug”.
These are the colours I chose:

I picked blue and white to represent our summer skies – there’s usually a cloud or two up there somewhere!

And these colours match a couple of the plants you see at this time of the year too! On my wanderings, I found tiny blue forget-me-nots and a few tufts of bog cotton that had survived the recent downpours.

Of course, including green was a bit of a no-brainer.

And as for that rich bronze-brown… That’s what the bog looks like in summer! You can see it a bit in this picture – unfortunately the bog is incredibly tricky to capture in photos!

And finally, I chose purple because it’s just about everywhere right now – tangled through the hedgerows, creeping along the ground and peeking out from among the tall grasses!

And after all that (plus a bit of knitting), some Beasties appeared!

I’ll be giving each of them a unique Irish-inspired accessory today… I wonder what they’ll be?
PS WordPress tells me that this is my 100th post! Thanks to all my readers, especially those of you who have been here from the very beginning!
Summer in the Countryside
It’s been a while since we last caught up with Explorer Beastie… with so many of his Beastie brothers and sisters sending reports of their travels to us, he hasn’t really got a look-in! So a trip out west to my boyfriend’s family farm was a perfect opportunity for him to take a wander, and for me to take some long-overdue photos.
First up – check in with the cows!

Then a quick stop to smell the flowers…
…And then off up the road!

I think this is the first chance I’ve had to share photos of the farm in high summer, and even I was surprised at how green everything was! Look at this… no filters, no fiddling, just nature doing its thing.

Next, we decided to head up onto the bog. The path was a bit overgrown… but that’s no problem for an adventurous little Beastie!

Even in summertime, the bog is noticeably less lush than the surrounding meadows – definitely easier terrain for those with slightly shorter legs!

It’s also the perfect place to stop for a snooze in the sun! Explorer Beastie found himself a comfy place to rest for a minute in a patch of springy heather. I bet he’s glad he packed his sunscreen!

After a refreshing nap, there was more exploring to be done!

But eventually Explorer Beastie decided he’d had enough of my paparazzi-ing, and made a break for it in the long grass!

Don’t worry, he made it home in time for dinner!
More Beastie adventures next week, wishing you all a monster weekend!
A New Kind of Beastie!

Rugby players look normal enough when they’re on the pitch, or standing with other rugby players. It’s only when you see them among the regular, non-rugby-playing public that you realise that they’re often around a foot taller than the rest of us, and built like tanks.
So when I was asked to make a rugby-playing Beastie buddy for a friend’s boyfriend, I was hardly surprised when she requested that her Beastie be a little taller than usual. And that’s how a new superbreed of Beastie was born… the Big Tall Rugby Beastie! Here he is posing with Explorer Beastie, to give you an idea of his superior stature.

I wanted to add in a few personal touches to make this monster extra special, too. Big Tall Rugby Beastie’s shirt is a Beastie-sized version of the one his new human team mates wear…

…I even included the team’s crest!

His new buddy also always wears mismatched socks when he plays, so…

And I couldn’t let him leave Beastie Towers without an official Ireland rugby ball! Once he had that, he was fully kitted out, and ready to hit the pitch… Taaaaa daaaaaa!

Be sure to keep an eye out for him at the Rugby World Cup in a couple of months!
Mia Beastie in the Mountains!

Hooray! I always love to catch up with Beasties after they’ve left Beastie Towers for their new homes. This week, I’m happy to share some photos of Mia Beastie, taken just after her move to Poland a couple of months ago! Of course, she had to get there first… Passports at the ready!

And don’t forget to check the size of your cabin baggage…

I think Mia Beastie was really excited to see planes for the first time!

Once she touched down in her new home, Mia Beastie started exploring pretty much immediately! Her first big adventure was a visit to Zakopane, a town in the very south of Poland, near the Slovakian border. Zakopane lies at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, and is a popular destination for skiers and climbers. Mia Beastie decided to tackle Kasprowy Wierch first… it’s one of the most popular ski peaks in Poland, and it marks the border with Slovakia, so you can literally be in two places at once.

You can also take a cable car to the top, which makes the climb a lot easier. Well, Mia Beastie didn’t want to ruin her pretty dress!

Look at that view! And there was more to come…

It was certainly a bit nippy at the top of the mountain, but the scenery made it totally worthwhile! Mia Beastie was also tempted to try her hand at skiing, but unfortunately they didn’t have any skis in her size…

Soon it was time to come down again… the prospect of tasty pierogi for dinner meant that Mia Beastie wasn’t going to hang around in the mountains all day! Better head back to that cable car…
And apart from one hair-raising moment, when someone suggested Mia Beastie might like to recreate some of the action scenes from “Where Eagles Dare”…

…She made it safely back down to earth!

Let’s hope Mia Beastie has lots more adventures with her new Polish family! Thanks to Anna for sending me the photos 🙂
Fantastic Beasties… and Where to Find Them!

You may all remember how much fun I had making Harry Potter Beastie a couple of months back… So I’m sure you can imagine how happy I was to hear that he was in need of a monster-sized friend to keep him company on his adventures, and to help him take on the Dark Lord Wooldemort!
Hermione was selected to be Harry’s companion, which was absolutely fine with me! I was looking forward to trying out a girl’s version of the Hogwarts uniform – so although Hermione Beastie has the same white shirt, Gryffindor tie and black robes I used for Harry, I’ve given her black tights, a grey skirt (I had some suitably school-uniform-y material in my vast fabric reserves) and a grey knitted sweatervest.

I also thought I’d make her a Time Turner necklace, as featured in “The Prisoner of Azkaban”!

And of course, there was her hair. I was looking forward to recreating Hermione’s famously exuberant hairdo so much that I left finishing it until the very end! Here’s a closeup of the front…

… And the back!

I also had to make sure she had all the essentials to get her through another school year! So of course she got a wand, inspired by the one Human Hermione uses in the movies…

… And Hermione wouldn’t go anywhere without at least one textbook in tow, so I chose this one for Hermione Beastie – just as a little light reading.

Then there was just time to make her a lovely cosy Gryffindor scarf (to prepare for the winter term)…

…And she was ready to go!

I can’t wait to see where she and Harry Beastie go next! You can follow their adventures on Harry’s Instagram – find him at @harrypotterbeastie!
Submarines and Seascapes… Paddy and Plunkett in Portsmouth, Part 3

Last week, we left adventurous Irish Beasties Paddy and Plunkett in something of a sticky situation… captured by an irate security guard who objected strenuously to Paddy’s attempts to take HMS Warrior for a test drive!
However, this week I’ve received another round of photos in which the pair of them appear to have eluded their captor… How can this be?
“A good escape artist never reveals his secrets,” says Plunkett. “And anyway, we had to go and have a look around the Alliance submarine.”

Fair enough.
Although it seems like Plunkett was really only interested in hanging out in the bar…

Apparently when Alliance was in use, food was stored just about anywhere they could find space. So yes, those beers are indeed being stashed in a torpedo tube! Fortunately, it’s a long time since any torpedoes were launched from this submarine – Alliance has been a museum since 1981, so Plunkett can enjoy his tinnies in peace.
Suitably refreshed, the two lads set off for the Figurehead Museum…

…Where they met some pretty unusual ladies!

Yikes! Imagine if you saw those faces leering at you from the front of a battleship! But look what was waiting for the boys around the corner…

…A whole knitted underwater scene! Look closely and you’ll see turtles, starfish and mermaids as well as hundreds of multicoloured fish! Paddy and Plunkett could have stayed here for hours, but then they saw this…

“Is that the Giant’s Causeway? We really have been away for quite a while… maybe it’s time to head home. Hope you’ve enjoyed following us around Portsmouth, see you soon for more monster adventures!”
Exciting News!

About a month ago I got an email from a company called Pod, asking if the Beasties and I would like to join their online crafty community and be featured on their website. Um, YES PLEASE!
The site launched on the 1st of July, and since my latest round of new Beasties need to remain secret for the moment, I thought I’d give you a sneak preview! I’m really proud to be involved in this, especially after I took a look at the work of the other artists and craftspeople they’ve included. They’ve put in a little bit about each of us…

…That’s me third from the left in the top row. You would not BELIEVE the trouble I had trying to find a photo of myself in which I am not holding a pint of Guinness or pulling my very attractive monster face. And of course, the Beasties are there too!

This first phase of the Pod website is all about introducing the makers and showing off their wares, but they’re planning to add more features in the near future. I’m really excited to see what they have in the pipeline!
In the meantime, why not go and have a look around?

More hot-off-the-knitting-needles Beasties next week, once they’ve arrived safely in their new homes!
Paddy and Plunkett’s Portsmouth – Part 2

The last time we checked in with Paddy and Plunkett, they’d got carried away exploring the Isle of Wight and missed the last boat back to the mainland! Fortunately, it seems they eventually managed to make their return journey by stowing away on a passing ship … the cable pattern on Paddy’s jumper is perfect camouflage in among the rigging ropes!

Even though they’re now back on dry land, they couldn’t resist going to visit one of the city’s most famous attractions – the Mary Rose!
The Mary Rose sank in 1545 just north of the Isle of Wight, after 33 years of service in Henry VIII’s navy. Her wreckage was rediscovered in 1971 (although Wikipedia mentions an earlier rediscovery in 1863, after which some enterprising gentlemen tried to meet market demand for salvaged artefacts by blowing up parts of the ship with condemned bomb shells filled with gunpowder) and so began a decade of intense underwater archaelogy, legal wranglings and preparations to extract what remained of the ship’s hull from the sticky clay on the seabed. Finally, on the 11th of October 1982, the Mary Rose saw daylight for the first time in more than 4 centuries! Conservation work has been ongoing ever since… the ship is now in the process of drying out after 25 years of being sprayed with preserving wax.
Unfortunately, photo opportunities were few and far between in the museum itself – with so many visitors around, a Beastie could easily get trampled underfoot! The lads were happy to soak up the sights, and leave the happy snaps until they stopped for coffee at the end of the tour. Hey look – Paddy’s got his own personalised mug!

Then there was just time to pose with this scurvy sea dog outside…

…Before going to seek more nautical adventures on board HMS Warrior. Warrior was Britain’s first iron-clad battleship, built in 1860. Her wrought-iron armour was a huge technological leap forward, and this development made the ship faster, stronger and harder to hit than anything else afloat at the time. Apparently, most rivals didn’t even bother to engage her – one look and they just slunk off into the sunset! She didn’t scare Paddy and Plunkett though – they were too busy hanging out in the rigging!

They also had a look around below decks…

And then… oh no! Who let Paddy drive?

These mischievous monsters have gone too far this time – they’d better leave before someone calls security…

Too late! Still, it’s not every day that you get forcibly ejected from a vintage battleship by a former film star… Super-observant readers may have seen this monster from the deep before, in the Bond film “For Your Eyes Only”!
Now it only remains to be seen if Paddy and Plunkett can wriggle free of the iron grip of the law! Stay tuned…
One Special Little Beastie

This monster lady has been waiting for her star turn on the BeastieBlog for quite a while! She was one of this year’s first Beasties, but because she was hoping to surprise her new family, I’ve held off putting up her photos until I could be certain she’d arrived safely. Now I know that she has, let’s meet her!

Because she’s going to live with a family who have recently added a new baby girl to their number, I wanted her to have a nice friendly face… and of course, she had to be pink!
Her sweet little gingham dress ties with a pink ribbon at the back…

…And has the new baby’s name embroidered on the front. Hopefully the two of them will have fun playing together when Mia is a bit older!

Then I completed her ensemble with a matching felt satchel, and she was ready to go!

I’m hoping to hear from her soon, and find out how she’s settling into her new home!
