Paddy and Plunkett Head to Portsmouth

Paddy Over Portsmouth! CrawCrafts BeastiesThese adventurous little monsters can’t seem to get enough of life on the high seas! After their recent visit to the National Maritime Museum in Co.Dublin, Paddy and Plunkett have resurfaced in Portsmouth – a city with centuries of naval history to its name. Coming as they do from an island nation, it’s little wonder that they felt immediately at home here – Portsmouth is the only island city in the UK!
Paddy with the Spinnaker Tower - H Crawford/CrawCrafts BeastiesEver eager for excitement, the first thing they did was to climb the Spinnaker Tower (that’s it in the background of the photo) and get a bird’s eye view of the city. This is always especially thrilling for a Beastie, since they spend most of their time significantly closer to the ground. Check out that view!

Beastie Freefall! H Crawford/CrawCrafts BeastiesFortunately there’s a nice thick layer of glass floor to keep the boys airborne – for a moment there I was certain they’d decided to take up BASE jumping!

Their next outing was a bit more sedate – a trip over to the Isle of Wight by hovercraft. They got a great day for it… Here’s Paddy posing with The Needles, a line of chalk stacks that’s one of Britain’s most famous natural landmarks.

YIKES!

Will Paddy and Plunkett ever make it back to Portsmouth? Or are they going to be marooned indefinitely on the Isle of Wight? You’ll have to wait until next week to find out…

Time For A Monster-Sized Snack!

Coca-Cola Beastie by CrawCrafts Beasties
Aaaah, it’s a beautiful day here at Beastie Towers! The sun is shining, the birds really are singing… it couldn’t be more perfect for sitting outside with a good book and an ice-cold can of something fizzy. So it’s lucky that Coca-Cola Beastie is making his special guest appearance on the BeastieBlog today!

The tale of Coca-Cola Beastie really begins with another Beastie. A couple of months ago, I decided to make a monster to celebrate our national obsession with Tayto cheese and onion crisps. These delectable delicacies are one of the things Irish people living abroad miss the most (along with strong tea and decent bacon), and I would estimate that a sizable chunk of Tayto’s annual output ends up being unofficially shipped overseas in care packages and holiday luggage. Tayto crisps also have their own theme park, and when Mr Tayto (an anthropomorphised potato in a suit, who is the company’s mascot) published his autobiography a few years back, it sold more than 60,000 copies. I figured the Beasties deserved a bite of the crispy, delicious action as well, so I set about making a miniaturised bag of tasty felt crisps for one of them to enjoy… You can see Tayto Beastie here, on the right in front of the teapot!
Beasties at the Market - CrawCrafts Beasties
Tayto Beastie was lucky enough to find a new home that very day, and it wasn’t long before his new family were looking for another snack-loving Beastie to keep him company! This monster needed to reflect his new mum’s love of Coca-Cola, “Great Expectations” and purple, so…

The book’s cover is designed to look like an old-school Penguin Classic, as specially requested in the commission… Great idea, don’t you think?

And of course, there’s the all-important can of Coke! It’s made from felt, with hand-embroidered lettering.

Climber Beastie Gets a Little Bo(U)lder!

Climber Beastie Rocks! J Donaldson/CrawCrafts Beasties
Climber Beastie is at it again! Last week I was sent a few pictures of his rock-based fun and games in France over Easter. He was really looking forward to tackling these big boulders at Fontainebleau (a paradise for climbers just 60km outside Paris) and even the slightly soggy weather that day wasn’t going to slow him down!

Ready, set… CLIMB!

How to Slay a Dragon

Dragon Slayer Beastie by CrawCrafts Beasties
Sometimes, projects take longer to come together than you expect. And sometimes they take a lot longer. I thought Beasties with dogs were my big crafting leap forward this year, but that was before I met Dragon Slayer Beastie! I first did the sketches for this commission back in April…
Dragon Slayer Beastie Sketches y CrawCrafts Beasties
…and back then I thought sketching up the dragon in the first place would be the hardest part!

Dragon Slayer Beastie was requested by a Beastie enthusiast who already has quite a family of little woolly monsters at home. They had attracted the attention of her young neighbour, and when the offer of a birthday Beastie was made, she decided (without any hesitation, apparently) that she’d like a Dragon Slayer Beastie, complete with dragon. As you can see from the sketch, the dragon had to have a golden body, and a silver head and wings. “Hmmm,” I thought. “Could be tricky, but I can probably manage it!”
I figured that seeing a few Shrek and Harry Potter films, plus my current enthusiasm for Game of Thrones, combined with more than a couple of years of experience in sewing my own critters from scratch, would all be ample preparation for the crafting challenges ahead.

You can probably tell where this is going.

It started out normally enough… Making the Beastie herself was a breeze!
Dragon Slayer Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties
As you can see, she’s ready to face down any dragon who dares to cross her path! She’s got a chain-mail top, and she’s armed with a lethal felt sword. Over her shoulder is a quiver of deadly felt arrows, to be used for long-range dragon-slaying missions…
Dragon Slayer Beastie's Quiver and Arrows, by CrawCrafts Beasties
So she had her outfit, and her weapons (in a range of suitably ladylike colours) were complete…
Dragon Slayer Beastie's Weapons, by CrawCrafts Beasties
…But where’s the dragon?

Uh-oh. Still stuck in what was proving to be a troublesome prototyping stage.
Rejected Dragon Body Templates - CrawCrafts Beasties

You see, the nature of the beast meant that I had to step out of my cosy felty comfort zone and use different, unfamiliar materials. And it was only when I started sewing pieces together that I found out how completely different and unfamiliar they were! Fortunately, I had the good sense to reject the gold and silver lycra I had originally planned to use – when I subjected them to the all-important stretchiness test in the shop, they proved themselves to be more suited to making eye-popping party clothes than dragons. If I’d gone with my first instinct, it’s more than likely that this post would be coming to you from within the padded walls of my nearest mental health facility.

So, I went for some less temperamental satin fabrics instead… but even these proved a far cry from the wholesome, homely materials I normally use. First of all, I had to allow for fraying – something you never have to deal with when you use felt! Another of their less charming characteristics is that they show up every little detail, meaning that any slight variations between component pieces are magnified tenfold. Even doing a “rough work” dragon with some leftover calico I had at home didn’t prepare me for making the real thing… Satin fabrics, I have discovered, are designed to drape elegantly, not hold in stuffing. If you’ve ever seen someone wearing a satin dress that was a size too small, you might have an idea of what I was up against. In my quest to tame this dragon, I took on lumpy body parts, misbehaving limbs that stood out at unnatural angles from their joints, twisted tails and floppy spines. I cut, trimmed and rejected heaps of templates…

…Made a few false starts…
Test Run Dragons - CrawCrafts Beasties
…But at last (and we’re talking absolute eleventh hour, down to the wire, seconds-to-spare-before-the-deadline here) I managed to wrangle the various bits into something vaguely dragon-shaped. Here he is snacking on the remains of his vanquished predecessors.
A Beastie Dragon is Born - CrawCrafts Beasties
And here he is doing his nicest smile for the camera.
Beastie Dragon, by CrawCrafts Beasties
I’d be the first to admit that he’s not perfect. But it’s a long time since I’ve had a craft project flummox me so completely… Every spare moment I had (and some less spare moments… sorry, workplace!) was spent trying to figure out what was going wrong with the templates, or how I could force the wilful satin to do my bidding. The end result may not accurately reflect the late nights, early mornings, miles of unpicked and restitched seams and lungfuls of inhaled satin dust (seriously, that stuff gets EVERYWHERE) that went into making it, but as a learning experience it was hard to beat. I know I have a long way to go before I can claim to be anything other than a paddler in the vast ocean of sewing skills, but I figure that’s a great excuse to go back and perfect some of the basics with simple, fun projects. So, if you have any favourite sewing patterns that would be good practice, I’d love to hear from you! Please share them in the comments… especially if they’re for little critters! I’ll be sure to post the results on the BeastieBlog as I go 🙂

As for Dragon Slayer Beastie and her dragon… the last I saw of them, they were heading off into the sunset to find their new home!

A Monster Tour of Dublin

Tae Beastie at the Guinness Storehouse - CrawCrafts Beasties

Wow! It’s been a hectic couple of weeks here at Beastie Towers! Sometimes a project comes along that demands a little extra effort, and that’s why there hasn’t been much activity here on the BeastieBlog lately. I’ll unveil that monster undertaking soon enough, but it seemed a bit much for a Friday… so let’s take a leisurely stroll around Dublin with Tae Beastie instead!

Just over a month ago, I got a request through Etsy for a Beastie with a mug. My tea-loving Barróg Beastie, Tae Beastie, was excited to leave Beastie Towers for pastures new… and when his family-to-be asked for some photos of him in his home town, we were happy to oblige! So here is Tae Beastie’s whistle-stop tour of Dublin, in pictures!

We started off just down the road from Beastie Towers, at the Guinness factory. Guinness is still brewed here on the original site at St James’ Gate, a little west of the city centre, and most days the air in this part of town is filled with the delicious chocolately scent of roasted barley, which gives the beer its dark colour.

Tae Beastie at the Guinness Storehouse - CrawCrafts BeastiesTae Beastie in the old part of the Guinness Brewery - CrawCrafts BeastiesAs you can see, there’s quite a contrast between the modern high-tech brewery and the older buildings on the site! However, many of the original buildings are still in use – one houses the Storehouse visitor centre, while others have been converted into offices.

After a wander through the lanes and alleys of the old brewery, we started heading for town! There was plenty to see along the way – this part of the city is packed with old churches. I asked Tae Baestie to pose with two of the most well-known… first of all St Audoen’s Church, which was built in 1190 and is the oldest parish church in Dublin (factoids courtesy of Wikipedia). I’ve also heard rumours that it’s haunted!
St Audoen's Church - CrawCrafts Beasties
Next, we passed Christ Church Cathedral, which in Medieval times was right in the very heart of the city.
Christchurch Cathedral - CrawCrafts Beasties
It’s a fascinating building, with flying buttresses, a crypt and a covered passageway which links the  Cathedral to the Synod Hall on the other side of the street. Christ Church stands at the far end of the Temple Bar area, so our next move was to take a stroll through the cobbled back streets!
Back Streets, Temple Bar - CrawCrafts Beasties
Temple Bar can be a bit of a tourist trap, but there are a few good pubs around here if you know where to look. I still enjoy an occasional visit to The Porter House or the Palace Bar when I’m in the area. However, most people end up here…
The Temple Bar - CrawCrafts Beasties
Our walk through Temple Bar brought us out conveniently just in front of Trinity College, home of the Book of Kells. It’s also where I went to university!
Front Square, Trinity College - CrawCrafts Beasties
This is Front Square, and the archway you can see towards the back of the picture is the main entrance to the College. Outside is one of the busiest roads in the city centre… but once you walk through Front Arch, all the traffic noise just VANISHES. It’s like stepping back in time! Tae Beastie enjoyed posing with the Campanile and this statue of a former Provost, whose expression I just can’t figure out… is he very stern, or does he have a bit of a cheeky glint in his eye?
The Campanile, Trinity College - CrawCrafts BeastiesTae Beastie meets the Provost - CrawCrafts BeastiesAfter that, we made a beeline (or, rather, a Beastieline) for St Stephen’s Green. This park is right in the middle of the south side city centre, and it’s a great place to enjoy the arrival of spring!
St Stephen's Green - CrawCrafts Beasties
Just inside the main entrance at the top of Grafton Street, you’ll find this lovely long avenue of lime trees. I’ll sometimes go out of my way to walk along here, whether it’s to enjoy the shade on a hot summer’s day, or kick through piles of bright yellow heart-shaped leaves in the autumn. Tae Beastie was especially taken with the fresh new foliage… check out those vibrant bright green leaves!
There were also plenty of spring flowers to see…
Spring Flowers at St Stephen's Green - CrawCrafts BeastiesCherry Blossom at St Stephen's Green - CrawCrafts BeastiesWe managed to get our final pictures just as the sun disappeared behind a cloud, and (luckily) before the rain started. Well, that’s spring in Ireland for you! Later that day, Tae Beastie headed off to his new home in Atlanta, Georgia… let’s hope he’s settling in well in the Peach State!

Nautical But Nice – The Further Adventures of Paddy & Plunkett

Paddy & Plunkett at the National Maritime Museum - H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties
It’s been a while since we’ve caught up with adventurous Irish Beasties Paddy and Plunkett… but that doesn’t mean they haven’t been busy! A while ago, they sent me some pictures of their visit to the National Maritime Museum of Ireland, which is in Dun Laoghaire in south County Dublin. I can see why they were keen to have a look around… the place is full of Beastie-sized boats!

Of course, not everything in the museum is miniaturised! Here they are posing with a recently restored Boyne curragh – a traditional Irish river boat made from cow hide stretched over a framework of woven hazel.

And this giant lightbulb definitely isn’t Beastie-size!

It’s the revolving lamp from a lighthouse, and its bright light sent the boys scuttling off in search of their sunglasses. But look what they found on the way! Paddy couldn’t pass up the chance to pose with this old-fashioned diving suit.

After that, they visited the Marconi Room, where Plunkett typed up a report of their findings…

… And Paddy sent it using the Morse code machine!

Luckily they chose to email it to me as well… my knowledge of Morse code is a little rusty. And once the message was sent, it was time to head off – who knows where they’ll pop up next?

About Paddy and Plunkett
Paddy and Plunkett are are special sub-species of Beastie called “Barróg Beasties”. “Barróg” is the Irish word for “hug”, which neatly sums up how friendly these little monsters are! They’re also special because they’re made from 100% Irish wool, which is spun and dyed in a family-owned mill in Co. Kilkenny. Keep an eye out for more Barróg Beasties on the BeastieBlog in the not-too-distant future!

Fighting Fire With… Fibres! Woolly Fibres!

Fireman Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties

Hooray! It’s time to introduce you to another new Beastie! Fireman Beastie may be a little smaller than your average firefighter, but he’s exactly the kind of monster you want to have around in an emergency.

All he has to do is put on his special Beastie-sized firefighting kit – felt wellies, a jacket with reflective stripes and of course a bright yellow felt helmet…

Finally, I made sure to provide him with some essential tools of the trade – a hose and a fire axe!

Reader Beastie Meets Some Prehistoric Monsters!

Reader Beastie with some T-Rexes - N Couture/CrawCrafts Beasties
Last weekend, I got an update from Reader Beastie, who is now happily living in Saskatchewan in Canada! This time, instead of helping out on the farm, he made an educational trip to visit a completely different type of animal…
Reader Beastie at the T-rex Discovery Centre - N Couture/CrawCrafts Beasties

The T-rex Discovery Centre in Eastend, Southwest Saskatchewan, is home to Scotty – one of the largest and most complete tyrannosaurus rex skeletons ever found! There’s a great story behind the discovery too… the first pieces of Scotty to be excavated – a tooth and a tail vertebra – were actually unearthed by a local schoolteacher, who had joined a team of paleontologists from the Royal Museum of Saskatchewan on one of their digs to learn about how fossils are found and identified. Imagine how he must have felt when he found out what he’d dug up!

It was a couple of years before the rest of Scotty made it out of the ground… excavation began in mid 1994, and since then these remains have helped paleontologists to better understand this most celebrated of dinosaurs, and how life was for them in the Frenchman River Valley 65 million years ago. Since the skeleton is almost complete, the museum has also been able to make a cast of each individual bone and reassemble a life-size Scotty for visitors to meet! You can see Reader Beastie posing with the replica in the main photo… and here he is bravely demonstrating exactly how fearsome t-rex teeth were!

Of course, t-rex wasn’t the only creature roaming prehistoric Saskatchewan! Reader Beastie also got up close and personal with a triceratops (my own favourite dinosaur)…

… And a brontothere – a large prehistoric mammal that was a distant relative of modern horses, rhinos and tapirs!

He even came across some dinosaur poop! Lucky it’s fossilised… Am I the only one thinking of that scene from “Jurassic Park” right now?

All in all, it looks like Reader Beastie had a super day out! He might even consider a change of career… Hello Paleontologist Beastie!

Time For a Little Monster Magic…

Harry Potter Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties
It really has been wall-to-wall commissions for me these last few months! With so many awesome requests coming in, it does make me wonder if I’ll forget how to come up with Beastie ideas by myself… but I’m not going to worry about that too much. Especially if all my special orders are as fun as this one! Please welcome Harry Potter Beastie to the BeastieBlog!

And finally… yes, I know it’s summer term, but I couldn’t resist knitting a cosy Gryffindor scarf to complete Harry Potter Beastie’s uniform! After all, you can never tell where his adventures will take him next…

By the way, if you want to accompany him on these adventures, you can! Within minutes of meeting his new Beastiebuddy, Harry Potter Beastie had his own Instagram account. You can find him there as @harrypotterbeastie, or non-Instagrammers can take a peek here!

In other news, the rest of the Beasties were so taken with Harry Potter Beastie’s online antics that they insisted I join Instagram too! If you don’t have enough monster madness in your life already, come and join the party – we are @crawcraftsbeasties!

Another Dog Lovin’ Beastie!

Tracy Beastie with her Dog - CrawCrafts Beasties
Well, I couldn’t say before, but I actually made TWO Beasties with canine pals last month! And now that this one has arrived in her new home and no birthday surprises will be spoiled, I reckon it’s high time she made an appearance on the BeastieBlog. Please say a big hello to Tracy Beastie!
Tracy Beastie and her Beastiedog, by CrawCrafts Beasties

Tracy Beastie should fit right in with her new family – not only do they have their own merry pack of pooches to keep her Beastiedog happy, her new mum also works as a dog trainer. So they should have plenty to talk about!

Because these two are off to sunny Texas, Tracy Beastie had to dress for the weather – we settled on her mum’s usual dogwalking outfit of yoga pants and a brightly coloured vest top. Oh, and sunglasses are a must-have!

Meanwhile, the Beastiedog looks a little like her new kennelmate Evy – a black lab cross with a white blaze on her front. If you look closely, you’ll see she’s sporting a special running harness for walkies, with a removable clip-on lead too!
