Explorer Beastie Enjoying the Irish Countryside - CrawCrafts Beasties

Spring in the Irish Countryside

Hello there everyone! How are things where you are? Our county borders reopened here in Ireland last week… And maybe it was this, or possibly I was inspired by Paddy and Plunkett’s “great escape” last week, but I decided it might be a good time to escape to the lovely Irish countryside for a couple of days!

Explorer Beastie came along too, looking very dapper in his new Aran sweater.
Beastie in an Apple Tree - Irish Countryside - CrawCrafts BeastiesUm, can you maybe turn around so we can see?
Beastie Aran Sweater - CrawCrafts BeastiesMuch better! That’ll keep you nice and cosy while we go exploring. Although it looks like we’ve been uncommonly lucky with the weather – you’d hardly know we’re in Ireland at all!

This apple blossom is great, isn’t it?
Apple Blossom - Irish Countryside - CrawCrafts Beasties“Yes, and it smells AMAZING!”
What's Over There? Irish Countryside - CrawCrafts Beasties“Hey, what’s over there?”

Oooh, good idea! Let’s head off over the fields and see what we can find.

It wasn’t long before we came across these very delicate flowers – does anyone know what they are?
Mystery Flowers - Irish Countryside - CrawCrafts Beasties“I’ll stand next to them, for scale!”

Identifying these was easy enough though – hello, primroses!
Primroses - Irish Countryside - CrawCrafts BeastiesIt’s always nice to see their sunny yellow faces peeking out of shaded, Beastie-sized hollows in the hedgerows.

And even though we were there last week, it looks like we only just caught the end of the May blossom! The Irish countryside is white with flowers at this time of year, thanks to the many hawthorn and blackthorn trees that make up our hedges. This is a blackthorn tree, I believe…

Ahhhh! I think we might just hang out here for a while, and watch the clouds drift by…

… And listen to the birds singing in the background. Make sure you have the sound on when you watch the video, so you can hear them too!

See you next time!

Vintage Fashion, Beastie Style 2 – All the Accessories!

Hey there everyone! And oh wow, look… I managed to post on a Tuesday! If you missed last week’s post (and who could blame you, it went out on Friday), we were catching up with this Beastie lady and her rather awesome vintage inspired look.
Vintage Style Beastie, a Commission by CrawCrafts BeastiesBut while it could be argued that “clothes maketh the monster”, this woolly little gal has much more going on. Let’s take a look at what she took with her when she left Beastie Towers for her new home.

First up…
Beastie Drum - Vintage Style Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesIs that a Beastie-sized drum? It certainly is!

And thanks to her magic magnetic paws, our friend can grab those drumsticks and belt out a thumping beat!
Vintage Beastie Playing the Drum - CrawCrafts Beasties

Drumming is thirsty work though… Perhaps some refreshments are in order?
Beastie Refreshments - CrawCrafts Beasties“Oooh, a Beastie-sized glass of red wine? Don’t mind if I do!”

I’m going to guess it’s her favourite vintage 😉

This wine glass was a pretty challenging make. Trying to sew see-through material is always tricky, and even calling on my old arch-nemesis, glue, didn’t provide any easy shortcuts! In the end, I went with keeping stitches to a minimum, using the most unobtrusive thread colours I could find, and throwing some unusual transparent items into the mix. I quite liked the effect that resulted from using crystal beads to make the stem!Beastie Wine Glass - CrawCrafts Beasties

There was even space inside for a discreetly-placed magnet, so she can quite literally hold her liquor!

“Definitely! Let’s eat!”Let's Eat! Vintage Style Beastie by CrawCrafts BeastiesWell, since she’s all set up with the proper cutlery and everything…

Oh, that does look good!
A Feast fit for a Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesOur vintage loving Beastie’s human counterpart loves a bit of fine dining… So hopefully her new monster friend will be suitably impressed by this needle-felted haute cuisine!

It looks like it’s passed the taste test! Let’s leave her to enjoy the rest of her meal. She’ll need to keep her strength up to look after all this stuff!Vintage Beastie with Accessories - CrawCrafts Beasties

Retro Style Beastie, A Commission by CrawCrafts Beasties

Vintage Fashion, Beastie Style

Greetings, Beastie friends! And wow, do I have a new Beastie treat for you this week… A fashion-conscious monster lady with an eye for retro style. Say hello to everyone, Ms Beastie!Vintage Style Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties

This Beastie was commissioned as a gift for a stylish girl who’s also big into vintage, and I have to admit that I had so much fun making her clothes and accessories.

For starters, let’s take a look at that dress.Vintage Style Print Dress - Commissions - CrawCrafts Beasties

Oh, do I love a good bold print! They’re my biggest craft shopping weakness. My fabric stash is heaving with fat quarters I’ve picked up while travelling, or random half-metres I bought “as a treat” when all I went into the shop for was a spool of thread. I was on the verge of wondering if perhaps I had a problem… But with all my favourite haberdasheries still closed, I was incredibly glad to have this stockpile! It meant that I was able to offer my customer a selection of prints with a bit of a 60s/70s flavour, and I’m so happy she chose this one. It caught my eye immediately when I saw it in the shop, and the colours look great with the Beastie’s lustrous red locks.

If you look closely, you’ll notice that I’ve been monkeying around with my construction techniques lately, too.Beastie Dress, Back - CrawCrafts Beasties

Facings in the bodice area on both sides of the dress make for a neater neckline and armholes, and the closure on the back sits better as well. Happy days!

The dress has a sweet A-line shape and closes with a hook and eye fastener on the back.

Oh, and while we’re looking at the back, let’s get another shot of that amazing hair.Red Hair - Beastie Style - CrawCrafts Beasties

This wool and alpaca yarn is outrgeously soft, and so much fun to style! It’s quite chunky though, so I cut down on volume by teasing some of the strands apart to make thinner pieces. Then I completed the hairstyle with a cute mint-green felt bow!

Turning around to the front again… A nice flick of eyeliner adds a bit of retro chic to any outfit, doesn’t it?Beastie Eyeliner - Retro Style - CrawCrafts Beasties

And this Beastie has more in her makeup bag, too. Behold, for the first time ever… Beastie nail varnish!Beastie Nail Varnish - CrawCrafts Beasties

I’m not a big fan of using glue, so the best option for a monster manicure turned out to be pearlescent sequins held in place with embroidery thread. They’re a sweet baby pink that flashes pastel yellow or blue, depending on how the light catches them.

Then, to complete the outfit, a pair of Beastie-sized pumps!Beastie Shoes - Beastie Vintage Style - CrawCrafts Beasties

These are based on shoes that our Beastie friend’s human counterpart actually owns. And this isn’t the only time we took style inspiration from her wardrobe… I also Beastified her earrings!Beastie Earrings - CrawCrafts Beasties

Aren’t these cool? And she doesn’t have to wear them all the time, either. The lobster claw clasps easily clip in to the small silver “everyday” hoops in her ears.

And last but not least… Let’s complete the look with a pair of Beastie-sized cat’s eye glasses!

Beastie Glasses - Retro Style Cat's Eye Glasses - CrawCrafts Beasties

This pair marks a bit of a departure in Beastie spectacle style – I don’t normally get to make bright or pastel-coloured frames! As usual, they have bendy wire legs to fit neatly around the Beastie’s head, and real lenses made from clear plastic.

Now, I know I said “last but not least” just then, but there’s more to this Beastie than her cool outfit. You see, over the last while, I’ve had a whole lot of “GME”s… That’s when I do up a sketch with lots of accessory options for someone and they say “Give me everything!”. And this was a serious GME! So be sure to join us again next week to see what else this Beastie took with her to her new home!

Memory Lane: Donegal Road Trips

Hello there Beastie friends! And hey, look at this – we’re nearly halfway through January already. That HAS to be worth celebrating! Now normally at this time of year, my brother and I (often with a certain small blue and yellow woolly monster in tow) would spend a day driving around beautiful Co Donegal, in the extreme north-west of Ireland. For obvious reasons, we haven’t managed a Donegal road trip in a good few months – possibly since last Christmas. Yikes!

So, I thought I would use today’s post to take a virtual road trip instead. Quick, put on the kettle for a nice cup of tea, or grab a can of the black stuff… Ready? Okay, let’s go!

First of all, it’s never advisable to start a road trip on an empty stomach. How about we kick off with a nice healthy Full Irish Breakfast?
Explorer Beastie, Eyeing up my Breakfast - CrawCrafts BeastiesDon’t worry, we’ll have plenty of opportunities to walk this off later.

Now that we’re properly fuelled up, let’s go and enjoy some scenery.
Explorer Beastie at Glengesh Pass, Donegal - CrawCrafts BeastiesGlengesh Pass is pretty spectacular at any time of the year. The last time we were there it was late summer – look at those rolling green hills! It’s also on the way to Glencolmcille, where a Beastie can dip his paws in the Atlantic if the mood takes him.
Paddling on Glencolmcille Beach - CrawCrafts BeastiesMind you, it’s not all sunshine and sand dunes here. Sometimes it can be a bit on the breezy side…

Also, you feel like you’re hanging out in someone’s cosy living room.

Countryside Christmas

Hello there Beastie friends! I hope you’re all staying safe and keeping well in these strange times. I thought I’d do something a little different today, and share a behind-the-scenes story… My Christmas in the countryside!

I usually head north of the border to spend the festive season with my family in Northern Ireland. Unfortunately, Coronavirus laughed in the face of my holiday plans. But luckily, Boyfriend’s family stepped in and “adopted” me for a couple of days, and Christmas Eve saw us both scooting westwards on the train to the peace and quiet of County Roscommon.

It was so nice to leave the city behind for a couple of days, and I made sure to head out for a walk every day to enjoy the sights and sounds of the countryside! Care to join me?

Now, we are in Ireland here, so it rained A LOT. Can you tell?
Rainy Ireland - Countryside Christmas - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd while some shadowy thickets retained a feeling of chilly mystery when the clouds parted…
Thicket - Countryside Christmas - CrawCrafts Beasties… In some places the winter sun broke through the trees and made the empty fields glow.

Gotta love those quiet roads and wide open skies.Countryside Christmas Wander - CrawCrafts BeastiesAnd there are wonders right at your feet in the undergrowth, too.
Earthstars - CrawCrafts BeastiesThese alien-looking marvels are fungi called earthstars. They pop up in the same place every year, so I always make sure to check in on them when I’m in the neighbourhood.

Then as the sun slipped below the horizon, I headed for home… Just as the moon started to rise over the fields.
The Moon & the Fields - CrawCrafts BeastiesBut where was Explorer Beastie while all this was going on? Ummm…
Sleepy Explorer Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesWell, I suppose the holidays are a time to rest up and recharge your batteries.

So, did the pandemic throw a spanner in the works of your usual end-of-year activities? And did you end up doing something different but equally fun? Be sure to tell us all about it in the comments!

It’s that time again…

Oh, it’s snuck up on me (and possibly all of you as well) a bit this year! But with the evenings getting darker, trees suddenly looking bare and the odd set of fairy lights appearing in windows around town, there’s no denying it – the end of the year is fast approaching. And that means…
Paddy's Idea - Beastmas 2018 - CrawCrafts BeastiesNo, I’m not quite ready to say it yet either! So I’ll just hint that I’m going to be very busy for the next couple of weeks, and leave it at that for the moment.

And my full schedule means that unfortunately the BeastieBlog will be going into hibernation until things quieten down a bit on the monster-making front. Don’t worry, we’ll be back before the end of the year to wave goodbye to 2020! So, stay safe out there and we’ll rejoin you in a few weeks.

In the meantime, please resist the urge to party too hard…

Angel Olsen Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties

Angel Olsen Beastie Takes to the Stage!

Hello there everyone! And as promised last time, it’s a new Beastie day here on the BeastieBlog… so let’s get ready to meet the latest addition to the family! Here she is now – Angel Olsen Beastie!
Angel Olsen Beastie Plays Guitar - CrawCrafts BeastiesAngel Olsen Beastie was created for Shane, who may be the biggest fan of human singer-songwriter Angel Olsen going. So this Beastification really needed to be a good one! Armed with some carefully-selected reference material (thanks Shane!), I picked out some wardrobe options for Ms Olsen-Beastie.
A Selection of Beastie Outfits - CrawCrafts BeastiesAs you can see, the vintage-style green dress with beehive hairdo won out. And much knitting, stitching and hairstyling later…

Twins? CrawCrafts Beasties
Angel Olsen photo borrowed from https://www.13thfloor.co.nz

Twins? Well, maybe apart from the very obvious differences in human and Beastie body shapes. But I used a nice glossy chestnut alpaca yarn to replicate Human Angel’s very classy updo with short choppy fringe…
Angel Olsen Updo - CrawCrafts Beasties… And I Beastified her dress too!
Angel Olsen Beastie's Dress, by CrawCrafts BeastiesI had a tricky time trying to find an exact match for the green in the photo, but this light olive satin from The Fabric Counter came closest while still complementing Angel Olsen Beastie’s pastel pink skin tone. I gave the dress a bit more of a “wiggle” shape than in the original sketch too, and added a concealed hook-and-eye fastening on the back.

And because satin is slippery… Even my spiffy new birthday sewing machine couldn’t deal with those teeny seams! So all those stitches are hand-sewn. Hey, who doesn’t love a teeny sewing challenge?

Then, we just needed one more thing.

Angel Olsen Beastie's Guitar - CrawCrafts Beasties
Gibson S-1 photo sneakily lifted from http://www.guitar-list.com

Thanks to the marvels of the internet, I was able to track down the make and model of the guitar that Human Angel Olsen usually plays. It’s a black Gibson S-1, in case you’re interested… And it lent itself well to the Beastification process.

And with some tactically-placed magnets in the guitar’s neck and body, Angel Olsen Beastie can really hold onto it!
Play Something, Angel Olsen Beastie! CrawCrafts BeastiesShe doesn’t have to play all the time though. The strap unclips at the side so she can put it down at the end of her gigs.

P.S.

One of the things Shane included in my “Getting to know Angel” pack was this video of a session for Seattle-based radio station KEXP, recorded back in 2017. Since live music is off the cards for most of us at the moment, I thought it might be a nice way to round off the post. Enjoy!

Botanic Beasties 2 – Back to the Gardens!

Hello Beastie friends! Wow, is it really Tuesday again already? How about we kick off this week with a continuing tour of Dublin’s Botanic Gardens, then? And don’t worry if you missed the first part last week, you can catch up here!

After encountering a very busy BumbleBeastie last time…

Monster Engagement Celebrations!

Hey there everyone! And, as hinted at in last week’s post, welcome to “What I Did During Lockdown, Part Two”! It turns out that tierneycreates Beastie wasn’t just shopping online… She was also on the lookout for love! And since Human Tierney recently celebrated her own engagement, what better time to pair her monster counterpart up with a good lookin’ Beastie fella?

Well hello there!
Fiancé Beastie Dressed to Impress - Engagement Gifts by CrawCrafts BeastiesHe’s certainly dressed to impress, in a crisp white t-shirt and hand-embroidered baseball cap. Let’s get a closer look at that, shall we?

Beastie Baseball Cap - Personalised Engagement Gifts by CrawCrafts BeastiesJust like human Tierney’s beau, this guy is showing some love for the Denver-based Colorado Avalanche ice hockey team… And how could any monster maker resist a team logo that incorporates a Bigfoot foot? I used 100% wool felt for the hat body, then appliquéd the large blocks of colour before embroidering in the finer details.

Hmmm… I wonder what else this woolly monster has in common with his human counterpart?

Well, it looks like he might be a dab hand (or paw) in the kitchen!
Beastie-Sized Spaghetti - CrawCrafts BeastiesYum! I’d almost eat this myself… If it wasn’t entirely made out of wool. The portion is probably better suited to a Beastie-sized appetite anyway. Are you hungry, Mr Beastie?

Oh, good point. Here, pop your favourite cooking apron back on.

It will also be the perfect accompaniment to… Poker night!

I think we should call it, and take a look at that hand.

And it looks like romance may indeed be on the cards… He’s got a pawful of hearts, featuring teeny-tiny embroidered portraits of himself, tierneycreates Beastie and Mikelet the (miniature) miniature Schnauzer.

So, any news you want to share with us?
Beastie Engagement Band - CrawCrafts BeastiesOoooh, is that an engagement band on your magic magnetic paw? And rumour has it that there was one in the box for a certain lady monster too… Congratulations, Beasties! May you enjoy many happy years of warm woolly happiness together.

And on that high note, it’s time to wrap up for this week! Catch you again next Tuesday!

Beastie Accessories Galore! CrawCrafts Beasties

Beastie Accessories Bonanza!

Hey there everyone! It’s a rainy old day here in Dublin, but even blustery showers can’t dampen my excitement about today’s post. This is essentially “What I Did During Lockdown, Part 1″… A monster haul of Beastie accessories for a very special woolly girl.
tierneycreates Beastie Face Closeup - CrawCrafts Beasties, Beastie HQHey there, tierneycreates Beastie!

For anyone who hasn’t met her before, tierneycreates Beastie lives with Tierney of tierneycreates.com. She regularly pops up in Tierney’s blog posts (she recently took a trip to the library) and occasionally takes on the task of writing them herself when her human counterpart is busy.

Like a lot of people, tierneycreates Beastie went a bit crazy ordering stuff online while we were all sheltering in place.

Ordering online - tierneycreates.com
tierneycreates Beastie indulging in a little retail therapy, borrowed from tierneycreates.com

Since the only person making Beastie accessories is yours truly, this meant I really had my work cut out for me!

First of all, she ordered some refreshments. And with many of my local off-licences offering home deliveries at the time, I decided it might indeed be a good idea to get in on that racket. Two bottles of Hop Monster IPA (a favourite Beastie tipple) coming right up!
Hop Monster IPA - Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts BeastiesWith libraries closed, getting her paws on some reading material was also high on tierneycreates Beastie’s to-do list. Human Tierney loves books about craft, personal development and home decor, so these titles should go down a treat.
Beastie Books - Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts BeastiesNext, she realised that this hat…
tierneycreates Beastie Dreads and Hat - Beastie HQ… Needed a matching scarf.
New Scarf - Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts Beasties“But hey, it’s not winter just yet! I should probably update my summer wardrobe as well. Oooh, polka dots!”
Beastie Summer Dress - Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts BeastiesInto the cart it goes.

Fortunately there are always a few Beasties knocking around here at Beastie Towers, so I was able to tailor it to tierneycreates Beastie’s approximate measurements!

However, all this staring at the computer screen was beginning to take its toll.

“I know! I’ll treat myself to a smartphone… Then I can order from anywhere!”

Fair enough. One Beast-iPhone coming right up!
Beast-iPhone - Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts BeastiesLook how teeny it is! I have enough trouble trying to type on the human-sized ones. This super-slim model is made from felt with a shiny reflective ribbon screen so it looks the part.

Of course, tierneycreates Beastie isn’t just shopping for herself. So that her beloved miniature miniature Schnauzer Mikelet can join her on longer adventures…
Beastie Besties - tierneycreates Beastie and Dog by CrawCrafts Beasties… She picked up a doggy backpack, just like the one Human Tierney uses to bring Mike the Miniature Schnauzer out and about!
Beastie Doggy Backpack - Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts BeastiesThe top of the backpack is open with a drawstring so Mikelet can peek out and stay involved in the action. It also goes rather nicely with the sundress!

And finally, one of my most challenging Beastie accessories to date. She asked for…
Beastie Sewing Machine - Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts BeastiesA sewing machine!

This top-of-the-range miniature marvel is what every Beastie quilter dreams of. Bernina may make the creme-de-la-creme of human-sized machines, but if you’re a little woolly monster, a Beastnina is what you want to have on your craft table.

So, what the Beastie wants, the Beastie gets! But how on earth do you make one? Well, I began by building a framework from wire, and filled out the shape by sculpting it with needle-felted wool. Then I hand-stitched a tailored felt “skin” to go on top, so the machine would have the same smooth lines as the full-size version. Finally, the details were added with embroidery and appliqué. Phew!

Still, I bet it’ll help tierneycreates Beastie to start stitching up a storm in no time.
Beastie Sewing Machine - tierneycreates Beastie Accessories - CrawCrafts BeastiesI just hope she still has time to help Tierney with her blog posts every now and again!

Here’s the finished haul…

tierneycreates Beastie in her new dress - Tierney DH/CrawCrafts BeastiesThanks so much to Tierney for this awesome project, and for enabling her Beastie’s online shopping addiction! For any of you who have also been (over)indulging in a little mail-order lately, you can confess all in the comments below. We won’t judge!

We’ll be back next Tuesday with another new Beastie for you to meet – stay safe and see you then!
