Explorer Beastie Relaxes in the Heather - CrawCrafts Beasties

Time For a Break!

Beastie Coffee Break - H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties
Phew! What a busy year it’s been – it really seems to have flown by! But I’ve had some good news from Other Work… it turns out that with everything else I had going on, I forgot to take any holidays!

Of course, I felt that this was a problem that required my immediate attention.

That said, “holiday” might be a bit of an exaggeration for what I have planned for the next couple of weeks. There’s still market stock to be made, and Christmas commissions to be finished! So with that in mind, the Beasties and I will be taking a short vacation from the blogosphere as well – just to give us a moment to enjoy the season…

…And catch our breath before the Christmas madness starts!

I’m also hoping it will give me a chance to read a few more of your awesome blogs!

We’ll be back at the beginning of next month, with some new woolly creations and monster adventures to share. In the meantime, keep in touch on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest!

Teatime with Explorer Beastie!

Teatime with Explorer Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties
Poor Explorer Beastie hasn’t got out and about much recently. In fact, he’s been spending an unreasonable amount of time hanging out on my desk, watching me type up the adventures of other Beasties instead! So when I went out last Saturday to somewhere that wasn’t Other Work or the supermarket, it only seemed fair to bring him along.

First stop – the Canal Bank Market! We even met some of the local residents on the way there…

And there was plenty to see at the market itself too!

After a lot of wandering, and only a little bit of shopping, we decided to grab some tea at Wall & Keogh – one of my favourite Dublin tea emporiums! Well, it was just around the corner from the market… Even so, Explorer Beastie decided to hitch a lift in my bag for the journey!Lunchtime! CrawCrafts Beasties

At least I didn’t have to buy him lunch – as usual, he brought his own.

Hey, what’s that?

Oh, cool! Let’s do the jigsaw!

Um, not sure you’ve quite got the right idea here…

Weekly Photo Challenge – “Grid”

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Grid.”

Turns out that I didn’t need to look too far for pictures for this week’s Photo Challenge! Going through the holiday snaps from the trip Explorer Beastie and I took to London last year, I found a surprising number of grids – in Kew Gardens (above and below)…

… And on the banks of the Thames!

Lucky we decided to take a city break, isn’t it? Grids are a lot harder to come by in the country!

See you next time!

Wild Horses, Country Residences and Little Woolly Monsters!

Paddy at the Kelpies - H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties
After an enjoyable trip to the Orkneys, Paddy and Plunkett have finally decided to head back to the Scottish mainland! The next stop on their journey was to visit the giant Kelpies sculptures in The Helix parkland, just outside the town of Falkirk in central Scotland.

These two massive horses stand guard over the eastern entrance to the newly extended Forth and Clyde canal, and they’re fast becoming one of Scotland’s most recognisable landmarks! Kelpies are mythological water creatures that feature heavily in Scottish folklore – pretty much every major stretch of water in the country has a resident kelpie. They usually take the form of a large and powerful horse, and their rather spooky modus operandi is to tempt humans to hop aboard, before plunging back underwater and having them for dinner! However, though the Kelpies statues may take their name from these otherworldly aquatic beasts, they are intended to represent the hardworking horses who pulled the barges along the canals back in the day… a fitting tribute, I think! The boys had lots of fun posing with the sculptures, despite the photography challenges posed by the breezy weather…

They also watched a barge full of visitors passing through the lock gate on the canal!

They resisted the urge to join them though… They had an appointment with royalty!
Plunkett at Dumfries House - H Crawford/CrawCrafts Beasties
This rather lovely place is Dumfries House. Back in the mid 2000s, its future was looking a little uncertain… the house was due to be sold, and its original Chippendale furniture (including some custom-made pieces) auctioned off. At the eleventh hour, the house, the estate in which it stands and its entire contents were purchased by a consortium headed up by Prince Charles, so that it could be preserved intact, and used to bring revenue to the surrounding area.

The house was opened to visitors in 2008, and since then other parts of the estate have been repurposed and put to use as well, providing education, employment and income to keep the project running. And there really is a lot going on there… for starters, you can stay on the estate! Paddy and Plunkett snuck into this beautiful, cosy room in the old stable block, now converted into a pretty spiffy guesthouse…

…And then took a tour of the Walled Garden, to check out the conservatory and herb garden!

Although the boys were also tempted by a tour of the house or a visit to the Arboretum, they realised that the date on their ferry ticket was…
Today.

Uh-oh… RUN!!

Phew! Made it, with seconds to spare!

Have a safe trip home, boys!

One Special Little Beastie

Mia's Beastie, by CrawCrafts Beasties
This monster lady has been waiting for her star turn on the BeastieBlog for quite a while! She was one of this year’s first Beasties, but because she was hoping to surprise her new family, I’ve held off putting up her photos until I could be certain she’d arrived safely. Now I know that she has, let’s meet her!

Because she’s going to live with a family who have recently added a new baby girl to their number, I wanted her to have a nice friendly face… and of course, she had to be pink!

…And has the new baby’s name embroidered on the front. Hopefully the two of them will have fun playing together when Mia is a bit older!

Then I completed her ensemble with a matching felt satchel, and she was ready to go!

I’m hoping to hear from her soon, and find out how she’s settling into her new home!

Time For A Monster-Sized Snack!

Coca-Cola Beastie by CrawCrafts Beasties
Aaaah, it’s a beautiful day here at Beastie Towers! The sun is shining, the birds really are singing… it couldn’t be more perfect for sitting outside with a good book and an ice-cold can of something fizzy. So it’s lucky that Coca-Cola Beastie is making his special guest appearance on the BeastieBlog today!

The tale of Coca-Cola Beastie really begins with another Beastie. A couple of months ago, I decided to make a monster to celebrate our national obsession with Tayto cheese and onion crisps. These delectable delicacies are one of the things Irish people living abroad miss the most (along with strong tea and decent bacon), and I would estimate that a sizable chunk of Tayto’s annual output ends up being unofficially shipped overseas in care packages and holiday luggage. Tayto crisps also have their own theme park, and when Mr Tayto (an anthropomorphised potato in a suit, who is the company’s mascot) published his autobiography a few years back, it sold more than 60,000 copies. I figured the Beasties deserved a bite of the crispy, delicious action as well, so I set about making a miniaturised bag of tasty felt crisps for one of them to enjoy… You can see Tayto Beastie here, on the right in front of the teapot!

Tayto Beastie was lucky enough to find a new home that very day, and it wasn’t long before his new family were looking for another snack-loving Beastie to keep him company! This monster needed to reflect his new mum’s love of Coca-Cola, “Great Expectations” and purple, so…

The book’s cover is designed to look like an old-school Penguin Classic, as specially requested in the commission… Great idea, don’t you think?

Reader Beastie Meets Some Prehistoric Monsters!

Reader Beastie with some T-Rexes - N Couture/CrawCrafts Beasties
Last weekend, I got an update from Reader Beastie, who is now happily living in Saskatchewan in Canada! This time, instead of helping out on the farm, he made an educational trip to visit a completely different type of animal…
Reader Beastie at the T-rex Discovery Centre - N Couture/CrawCrafts Beasties

The T-rex Discovery Centre in Eastend, Southwest Saskatchewan, is home to Scotty – one of the largest and most complete tyrannosaurus rex skeletons ever found! There’s a great story behind the discovery too… the first pieces of Scotty to be excavated – a tooth and a tail vertebra – were actually unearthed by a local schoolteacher, who had joined a team of paleontologists from the Royal Museum of Saskatchewan on one of their digs to learn about how fossils are found and identified. Imagine how he must have felt when he found out what he’d dug up!

It was a couple of years before the rest of Scotty made it out of the ground… excavation began in mid 1994, and since then these remains have helped paleontologists to better understand this most celebrated of dinosaurs, and how life was for them in the Frenchman River Valley 65 million years ago. Since the skeleton is almost complete, the museum has also been able to make a cast of each individual bone and reassemble a life-size Scotty for visitors to meet! You can see Reader Beastie posing with the replica in the main photo… and here he is bravely demonstrating exactly how fearsome t-rex teeth were!
Reader Beastie with a T-rex Skull - N Couture/CrawCrafts Beasties
Of course, t-rex wasn’t the only creature roaming prehistoric Saskatchewan! Reader Beastie also got up close and personal with a triceratops (my own favourite dinosaur)…

… And a brontothere – a large prehistoric mammal that was a distant relative of modern horses, rhinos and tapirs!

He even came across some dinosaur poop! Lucky it’s fossilised… Am I the only one thinking of that scene from “Jurassic Park” right now?

All in all, it looks like Reader Beastie had a super day out! He might even consider a change of career… Hello Paleontologist Beastie!

Beasties Go Up In The World!

Climber Beastie by CrawCrafts Beasties

A few weeks ago, I got a message from a fellow Beastie enthusiast asking if Explorer Beastie would like to join him for a few days of rock-climbing fun in Les Calanques in the south of France. I thought Explorer Beastie would jump at the chance, but it seems he has somewhat lost his head for heights since his trip to Lanzarote last year…
Tumble in the Lava - Oooops.

The opportunity was too good to pass up, so it was lucky that Climber Beastie showed up! In fairness, he is much better prepared for the challenges of scaling vertical rock faces. He arrived wearing a cosy fleece top…

…and kitted out with a Beastie-sized climbing harness, complete with carabiner…

Once he’d checked all his equipment, it was time for him to set off on the first leg of his journey…

And having successfully made it to his destination, he’s ready to start scrambling up some cliffs! It looks like he’s got his work cut out for him…

What’s Cooking at Beastie Towers?

Baker Girl Beastie by CrawCrafts Beasties

Yes, you’ve guessed it… CUPCAKES! And not just any cupcakes… Baker Girl Beastie has mastered the art of making lovely little buns that are light, fluffy, fat-free and full of fibre! Of course, that’s because they’re made entirely from felt and polyester stuffing, but at least they look the part. Here, help yourself to an extreme close-up… YUM!
Baker Girl Beastie's Felt Cupcake - Crawcrafts Beasties

Baker Girl Beastie was created specially for Briege, whose company Bee’s Cakes makes divine cupcakes that would melt the resolve of even the most hardened dieter. If you need a Sunday morning cake fix, take a look at her Facebook page – after much deliberation, I decided that the chocolate ones with coffee buttercream were probably my favourite, but it was a close call!

Baker Girl Beastie has lovely copper coloured hair to match her new mum’s, and she’s made in Briege’s favourite colour combination of pink and purple. I came across this gorgeous rich aubergine shade in my local yarn shop – what a find!

She’s also wearing a sweet little floral-print dress (any excuse to pick up some new fabric!) with box pleats in the skirt to give it a bit of oomph…

…And eagle-eyed readers will also spot the little hand-embroidered bee motif on her apron!

Baker Girl Beastie arrived safely in her new home last week, and is apparently settling in well! I can’t wait to see what tasty treats she cooks up next…

Are any of you planning some Sunday baking? Let me know in the comments!

Have a cake-tastic weekend!

Is it a Bird? Is it a Plane?

SuperKatie Beastie by CrawCrafts Beasties

No, it’s SuperKatie Beastie!

SuperKatie Beastie was commissioned as a gift for a girl called Katie who is super-into superheroes. Since I couldn’t choose just one superhero to Beastify for her (and because I have a mortal fear of copyright infringement), I thought it would be fun to make her own personal hero. And here she is!
SuperKatie Beastie Close-up - CrawCrafts Beasties
Like all good superheroes, SuperKatie Beastie has a mask to keep her real identity a secret! And I had great fun designing a logo for her superhero costume, too…

As you can see, she also has a utility belt aaaaaand…
SuperKatie Beastie's Cape - CrawCrafts Beasties
… a classy satin cape to help her fly!

Katie and SuperKatie Beastie met for the first time on Saturday. Since then, I have learned that this talented little monster is demonstrating an uncanny range of superpowers, including telekenesis! She also has a cover name (which I can’t reveal in case the forces of darkness are monitoring this blog) and has taken a day job as a vet. Oh, and her superhuman (or should that be superbeastie?) abilities came about after she took a school trip to a nuclear power plant and it was struck by lightning. That’s some origin story!

Hopefully Katie and SuperKatie Beastie will keep us up to date with their crime-fighting adventures… bad guys beware!
