Hey there Beastie friends! I hope you all had a super weekend… Especially any of you who were celebrating St Patrick’s Day on Saturday!
Today on the BeastieBlog, we’re weighing in on an issue that has been troubling humans for centuries – the ongoing battle between the arts and the sciences. And is it really true that if you have an interest in one, you’ll have no aptitude for the other?
For Beasties, the answer is a big HECK NO! Why would you ever limit yourself to just one? Meet this little monster lady, who just headed off to her new home last week.
With her long, flowing blonde locks and winning smile, she’ll look every inch the ballerina when she’s in her dance studio… This Beastie loves her ballet! So I made her a pair of pumps with ribbon laces…
… And a very feminine pink net tutu as well.
As you can see, the tutu actually fastens with snaps, to make sure it doesn’t fall off mid-pirouette!
But she’s not going to dance away the whole day! Time for a quick costume change…
… And it’s off to the lab! Because like her new human friend, this Ballerina Beastie is also a scientist!
Hey, don’t forget your bag!
Because Ballerina Scientist Beastie’s human counterpart is especially interested in DNA and associated fields of research, I thought a little personalised embellishment on her bag might be in order. And what’s that inside?
It’s a Beastie-sized laptop! This little felt computer has an embroidered keyboard, appliqué felt details and magnets inside to make sure it closes with a nice neat “click”.
So, with that safely packed away again…
…It’s time to head off in search of adventure!
Thanks to my lovely customer Arlyng for requesting this special Beastie as a gift for her friend! I enjoyed the challenge of capturing all her interests in one Beastie project.

How is it that Beastie feet (paws?) look quite flat when they are wearing boots but obviously when they are wearing ballet pumps, they are up on their points? And the feet (paws?) NEVER CHANGE SHAPE. What magic is this??

Oh that lab coat does take me back to my days as a lab rat! And what, blond hair too? She’s my Beastie doppelgänger (although I’m sure I’d fall on my face if I ever attempted ballet). I’m firmly on the side that art and science pair perfectly. Trust me, when you’re trying to build mouse-sized lab equipment from random stuff at the hardware store, you get VERY creative. Another excellent job, Helen!!!
Hahaha! Hey, can I commission you to make a Beastie-sized maze to keep the monsters busy next time I’m trying to do my accounts? It sounds like you already have considerable experience in this area. 😀 I did actually think that this Beastie might catch your eye, given your scientific past… And I’m totally with you on the ballet thing. So many of my brother’s toys met their end thanks to my clumsy feet that the question of sending me to ballet lessons as a child was never even raised 😂 At least I’m not the only one! Thanks for your comment… I feel better now! 😁
Clumsiness is probably why my parents bought me Legos and not delicate dolls. Step on a Lego piece once and you never make that mistake again! And after the teensy tiny things I had to build for mouse neurosurgery, a Beastie-sized maze should be no problem. I can’t guarantee you’ll actually be able to corral them into it, but….
Ah nuts! I didn’t think of that! That’s me resorting to bribery AGAIN, then. 🙄 As for your Legotherapy, did it make you more graceful? If nothing else, I imagine that repeatedly standing on stray blocks taught you some sweet dance moves! 😂
Mostly I just developed tough feet. I can walk across gravel pathways now with only the tiniest bit of wincing. Maybe I should start a Walking Across Hot Coals act?

Definitely! I’m sure having a good head for figures helps though… I’m surprised how often I’m compelled to call on my sub-average mental arithmetic skills when I’m knitting! 😂

At this point I am just overwhelmed with the cuteness. If there was a national award for cuteness then the Beasties would win it! The ballet slippers – what a touch (not to mention the various accessories). I think a love of Art & Science can exist peacefully together within the same person. I am a huge science fiction fan and studied science at university but as you know I am really into artistic pursuits 🙂

Great Beastie, Helen! I love how well-rounded her human counterpart is – proof that art and science need not be at odds! The tutu is so thoughtfully done (no chance of a wardrobe malfunction with those secure snaps!) and when I saw the DNA satchel and laptop… just, speechless. That computer is so cool! My mind loves those tiny keys! I’ve always loved the arts, but find the most inspiration from the natural world – so much artful design there. 🙂
It’s so true! I find that even delving into a really good documentary series can fire my imagination and send me off in all kinds of interesting and imaginative directions!
