Hey there everybody! It may be another bright and sunny Tuesday in Dublin, but here in Beastie Towers we’re still dreaming of our recent adventures in Germany…
… And today’s post finds us moving on to Frankfurt, where we had urgent business – visiting Frankfurt Zoo with friends!
At around this time, Frankfurt Zoo was experiencing a bit of a baby boom. The main attraction was the triplet lion cubs, who had arrived in mid-April, but it turned out this momma bear had had some good news of her own recently too!
She was a lot braver than the cubs though – we were only just able to see them peeking their noses out from the doorway in the background!
And while the lion cubs had been formally introduced to their adoring public at the end of May, this new family wasn’t being subjected to the spotlight all day every day. But thanks to the wonders of technology, we were still able to see all the latest goings-on inside the lions’ den! Hey, looks like it’s lunchtime!
A little further along, we were able to catch up with some less elusive creatures. Looks like Explorer Beastie is planning a new career as a goatherd!
Next up – alpacas! They appeared to have had a haircut recently… What a shame I missed THAT! I would gladly have taken the trimmings off the Zoo’s hands for a reasonable fee.
Then, at the zebra enclosure, Explorer Beastie made a friend!
Seems pink amigurumi unicorns enjoy a day at the zoo too!
And there were more pink creatures to see, like this vaguely rose-tinted pelican…
… And of course, FLAMINGOS!
But it soon felt like we were back on the African plains… On our wanderings, we encountered a rhino, a klipspringer and a whole herd of dama gazelles!
Explorer Beastie even got to hang out with the giraffes… Sort of.
Then, because it was a really HOT day, we were happy to take the zoo up on an opportunity to cool off underwater! Hmm, is anybody home?
Luckily, there was a Beastie buddy on hand to make sure Explorer Beastie didn’t miss anything!
And to top it all off, he got to take ride in a submarine with his new friend Rose!
Where will their undersea craft wash up? You’ll have to join us on Friday to find out…
Also, thanks to Isabel and Rose for all their help with the photos for this post! You’re the best!
The Frankfurt Zoo looks like a Beastie blast! I can’t believe they aren’t spinning and selling their own alpaca yarn in the gift shop. Clearly a missed opportunity there. And I can’t believe Germany has unicorns in their zoo! Amazing. Although, from what we’ve learned about unicorn behavior from Weekes, maybe it’s best to keep the kiddies away from them.
Ha! I think things only get weird when there’s more than one of them around! š And yes, missed opportunity for the zoo in the yarn manufacturing department – in fact, there’s the potential to harvest all kinds of fancy fibres from the inhabitants if they put their minds to it. I’ll take one ball of tiger fur sheddings, please! š Thanks for stopping in, Tammie!
Um, I could send you all the hair I brush out of my toothless cat’s coat every day. Wait, this is getting too Cruella deVille. š³
Tempting as that offer is… ššš
How funny … katsching went to the zoo in Prague yesterday. I have a feeling they are conspiring.
Those monsters love their zoos! I hope Katsching took lots of pictures of her trip… Thanks for joining us on ours! š
Oh my goodness how fun! Loved the Beastie adventure!
Thanks, Tierney! We had a great time too! š
What a fun time! An alpaca haircut would have been the sight to see, wouldn’t it? (I’m imagining them in little barber’s chairs and haircut-cloaks). What DO they do with all of that precious precious fiber? And what a cool pelican – I didn’t realize they were such large birds! And the flamingos are awesome. Glad to read that EB met some furry and feathery pals in Frankfurt!
Hahaha! Yes, I reeeeally hope that’s how haircut day goes in the alpaca enclosure. I’m sure they were glad to be relieved of their fluff though – it was so hot that day! And hopefully they found a grateful spinner to take care of the trimmings – it would be such a shame if the fleece was just binned. Thanks for joining us on our walkabout, Shirley!
Awww shame you didn’t get to see the babies live and in person, but I think that’s great they don’t leave them exposed to the public all day. EB looks sooooooooooo hipster in front of that lovely turquoise tank! It looks like a lovely zoo, and I’m glad he got to spend the day with a little friend! (And awww the naked alpacas are so cute!! haha)
Hahaha! I know, aren’t they? Just goes to show how much of an alpaca is fluff! Frankfurt zoo is a really good one, with loads of interesting critters to see – highly recommended is you’re ever out that way! Cheers for joining us on our trip š
See, Edward claims that he’s all ‘fluff’, but I think that shaving off his fur would have horrifying results and reveal that he is, in fact, just obese. And I’ll just have to keep enjoying your snaps until I can make it over to Germany!
Ah, maybe we should just take him at his word… Much as I love Edward’s delightful colouring, I’m not sure I could use (or sell) cat fur yarn! š PUT THE RAZOR DOWN!!
Do you mean to tell me that you haven’t seen the video of the person who makes hats for cats out of cat fur? I’d send you the link, but I’m on the YouTube-banned work computer!!!
But… But… Cats already have cat fur hats on their heads! And I don’t know about J+E, but if I’d tried to put a hat on my dear departed family moggy, she would have put a stop to those shenanigans immediately. I had heard of people spinning yarn from their cats’ and dogs’ fur, but I didn’t know it had become A Thing! š³
Hahaha well, as one of the commenters on YouTube says, ‘Almost all of the cats look disturbed and petrified. Like in those movies when the killer make clothes out of their victims flesh!’
“Human, why are you doing this to me? I shed this fur for a reason!”
Yikes. Just yikes. š
