Yeeeeee-Haaaaa! New Beastie Time!

It’s been a while since we’ve had a new Beastie to meet… In all the heady whirl of making plans and enjoying a few trips away, I appear to have let the monster-making slide somewhat. But all that changes today! Fresh off the needles and ready to get to work on the ranch… It’s Cowboy Beastie!
Cowboy Beastie, by CrawCrafts BeastiesCowboy Beastie was commissioned by my buddy Aoife from Diplodocus Books, as a birthday gift for her boyfriend. He’s a big fan of all things Wild West, and apparently he was quite taken with Aoife’s own Beastie friend, Crumb. They met at a market we did together a couple of years back!Aoife and her Beastie - CrawCrafts BeastiesThis was a bit of a last-minuter… But fortunately I was able to take a sneaky shortcut, by showing Aoife the sketches I did for CowGIRL Beastie, who I made back in November!
Cowgirl Beastie, Start to Finish - CrawCrafts BeastiesWith a few tweaks to make this Beastie his own man, we were ready to go! As you can see, he’s bought his checked shirt in the same store…

Cowboy Beastie's Lariat - CrawCrafts Beasties… But I’ve given him a tousled mop of sandy hair, and he’s clearly going to a different dentist!
Cowboy Beastie Headshot - CrawCrafts BeastiesThat leaves just one more thing to complete his look…
Cowboy Beastie's Cowboy Hat, by CrawCrafts Beasties… That all-important cowboy hat! With this one, I shaped the brim to give it the characteristic curled sides.

And doesn’t he wear it well?
Cowboy Beastie, Ready to Go! CrawCrafts BeastiesNow all he needs are some Beastie-sized cattle to round up!
One Finished Cowboy Beastie! CrawCrafts BeastiesWe’ll be back next week with more monster fun and games… In the meantime, I heartily recommend going to check out Aoife’s beautiful hand-bound journals on Diplodocus Books’ Facebook page. Or find her on Instagram, where she shares new designs and some of her own illustrated journal pages! I wish my diary was as colourful and interesting as hers is!

  1. Howdie Cowboy, Oh, what a handsome beastie! I love the striped pants and the plaid shirt. ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. Heehee, thanks Ivonne! I’mโ€‹ actually really happy with how that shirt turned out – especially since I used my sewing machine for some of the longer seams! ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. I love the hat! Makes me think of JR from years gone by. Ooooops! I’m dating myself there…..

  3. Now he has to come to Canada. We’very got cows galore and Beastie friends to gather with.

    1. Hahaha, I’ll pass on your invitation! I’m sure with summer just around the corner, you could use some extra help on the farm ๐Ÿ˜‰ Hope you and your Beasties are keeping well, Nicole!

    1. Hahaha, sometimes those details drive me a little crazy too! ๐Ÿ˜ต๐Ÿ˜ต๐Ÿ˜ต But this guy was great fun to make… All his accessories were very cooperative! Thank you, Tajana! ๐Ÿ’š

  4. Only a Cowboy Beastie would have the confidence to pull off wearing stripes and plaid at the same time. And you’ll be whipping out that herd of mini-cows when???

    1. Why, as soon as I figure out how on earth to make a teeny cow! ๐Ÿ˜€ Really, they should be teaching this stuff in school… I think a research trip to the farm this weekend to look at some cows would probably help though, what do you reckon? And yes, Beasties are indeed very fashion-forward creatures. I wish I could say they get that from me, but… ๐Ÿ˜† Cheers for stopping by, Tammie!

        1. Oddly enough it says it’s from WikiTravel. But really, if you need a laugh, do look up “Earth” on WikiTravel…hilarious for all, but especially for Douglas Adams’s fans.

  5. Love him!!! The little leather braided hatband is my fave part โค๏ธ so perfect. He’s very authentic and would fit right in at West World ๐Ÿ˜œ

  6. Well you KNEW Cowboy Beastie would steal my heart! He would fit right in here in Jackson Hole. The rodeo begins again in a few weeks and there’s always the County Fair in July with pig wrestling, bucking broncos and figure 8 raches!

    1. Heehee, thanks Maggie! Maybe I should round up some cowboy Beasties and head right on over! I think the one time I was in Jackson Hole must have been at the start of rodeo season… It was late June and I remember the streets being packed with people. Unfortunately that’s all I remember, since it was a quarter of of a century ago! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

    1. Thank you, Laura! I do love monkeying around with those details… And I think I could almost tie that lariat knot without replaying the YouTube tutorial 8 times now! ๐Ÿ˜€

  7. Bravo for cowboy Beastie! So cute, and I cannot get over how awesome the little hat is with its upturned brim and little Beastie ear-holes. Incredible work, Helen. I love your hand-drawn sketches, too! ๐Ÿ™‚
