Beastie Birthday to You!

Hello everybody! Welcome to a whole new week… And also, allow me to present a whole new Beastie!
Jon Beastie, a Special Birthday Commission by CrawCrafts BeastiesMany recent Beastifications have coincided with a human birthday, and this project was no exception! A while back, Jan from The Snail of Happiness got in touch with me to request a monster companion for her partner Jon, who had a birthday coming up. Since she’s been following the adventures of the Beasties almost from day one, I was super-happy to oblige!

So, Human Jon loves a bit of purple… That made it easy to sort out his outfit! I also made sure that his monster mini-me had the same hairstyle…
Jon Beastie Hair - CrawCrafts Beasties… And glasses!
Jon Beastie's Frameless Glasses - CrawCrafts BeastiesPartially frameless glasses were a new departure for me, but the lenses surprised me by adapting well to their new-found freedom!

And I made sure to prepare this Beastie fellow for the cooler days ahead. His hat happens to be modelled on one made for Human Jon by Jan!
Jon Beastie's Hat - CrawCrafts BeastiesI’ve been really interested by Jan’s “ScrapHappy” posts on her blog, and a hat made of yarn scraps (inspired by her own Permaculture Hat) was one of the accessories I suggested in the initial design sketch I did for her. For the colour blocks in this hat, I knitted with offcuts of the same Irish yarn I use for my BarrΓ³g (Irish) Beasties, and you can juuuuust about see the ear holes I included into the design for added Beastie comfort.

And what else has he got there?
Jon Beastie Notebook Pen - CrawCrafts BeastiesAha! A notebook and pen, essential kit for any author. It looks like Jon Beastie will be attempting to follow in the footsteps of his human counterpart, by using a Beastie-sized version of his favourite notebook! The Beastified version is made from felt, with a teeny hand-embroidered cover. And so he can carry it safely…
Jon Beastie Rucksack - CrawCrafts Beasties… I made him a Beastie-sized rucksack!

But there’s more! Because when you hear that someone is also keen on working with electronics, AND owns a flying V guitar, you kinda have to add those aspects into the Beastification too.
Jon Beastie's Soldering Iron and Guitar - CrawCrafts BeastiesTa-daaaaah! One Beastie-sized soldering iron, and a white flying V!

I hid a magnet inside the plug of the soldering iron, so that Jon Beastie can “plug in” to any magnet-friendly metals in the workshop.
Beastie Soldering Iron - CrawCrafts BeastiesThen the guitar is made of felt, with appliquΓ©d and embroidered details. Perfect for extended solos! Hey Jon Beastie, do you know “Happy Birthday”?

Dr Snail Beastie, a special Birthday Commission by CrawCrafts BeastiesUnfortunately, you’ll have to wait until next week to find out… This was too big a Beastification to fit into one post! So we’ll see you next Tuesday for part two… In the meantime, why not check out what Jon Beastie’s human counterpart has been up to this summer?

    1. Well, I haven’t heard anything on the news… YET. πŸ˜‰
I’m so glad they hit the mark – it’s always a little nerve-wracking making for fellow craftspeople! I did really enjoy making the notebook though, so it’s great to hear Jon liked it! Thanks again for inviting Beasties to your birthday festivities!

    1. Thanks, Robin! And there were loads in this project too… I didn’t realise how many until I wrote out my final “to do” list! Cheers for swinging by to check them out πŸ˜€

    1. Thanks, Simon! Yes, it was one of this Beastie’s “must-have” items, and I did need to do a bit of picture research for it… It’s been a long while since I’ve used one of these! Cheers for dropping in πŸ˜€

        1. Yeowch! Nobody wants singed paws! Fortunately, the Beastie version never really gets too hot! πŸ˜†

    1. Why thank you! And I’m always up for a new Beastification challenge, so let me know when you’re ready to get started! Thanks for stopping by πŸ˜€

    1. Thanks, Melissa! And that’s only half of what this project involved πŸ˜… It’s been a busy old summer! Hope you had a good one yourself, thanks for dropping in!

    1. Thanks, Shirley! I just hope he’s not keeping the neighbours up with excessive guitar noodling 😁 Cheers for popping in to meet him!

  1. OMG he’s incredible!!!!!!!! The hat is an especially nice personalised touch. It’s funny that, it seems, about 90% of your clientele are blind and require Beastie specs. I chose to live out my fantasy by having you bestow perfect sight on Sinead… living a lie? Amazing work as ever. (Also, really loving the skin tone on Jan Beastie – can’t wait to see her in detail!)

    1. Oooh yes, it’s a veeery nice green… Especially apt for someone like Jan, who’s all about sustainable living! As for those glasses… They really are all the rage just now, aren’t they? But then nobody rocks specs like Beasties! πŸ€“ Cheers for stopping in, Weekes!

  2. The “Like” button is not doing it for me. For your posts, I need a “Oh My Goodness Wow Helen!!!” button to click on. So WOW – your first partially rimmed glasses and electric guitar and more – WOW! My friend who is having you make the special wedding Beastie and I have been laughing that we will need to start having Beastie playdates. Well you know soon you will have the world populated with your Beasties and then you will have to hold a Beastie Lover Convention – ha!

    1. Awww, thanks Tierney! I’ll get right on to WordPress about that button right away… A few clicks of that would make my day! πŸ˜€ Also, better start organising those Beastie playdates… Your friend’s Beastie (and companions) started their journey westwards yesterday! It might indeed be time for me to start looking at conference venues… πŸ˜‰
      Cheers for stopping in!

  3. Ah damn, in my editing frenzy I missed this birthday party. Is there any cake left? I love that guitar, but now I’m wondering to what extent your monster creation is going to go. Will the next guitar have a tiny sound chip sewn into it so the guitar plays a little tune when squeezed?

    1. Hahaha! Tempt me not, Tammie! πŸ˜‚ I already have a hard time trying to draw the “that’s enough now” line! And OH NO, I forgot to make a Beastie-sized birthday cake… Oh well, at least that means you didn’t miss anything. Hope the editing frenzy is going well, cheers for hanging out with the Beasties on your break! πŸ˜€

      1. Well, I’ve caught glimpses of those felt cupcakes in the background of some of your photos, so at least I know the Beastie’s didn’t go hungry on their special day. Not that they ever do πŸ™„

        1. Haha! Certainly not… When you welcome a Beastie into your home, expect to lose 5-10% of every meal, and 25-50% of every beer you consume from then onwards! πŸ˜† Maybe I should include a disclaimer to that effect on their passports? πŸ€”

        2. I think you’ve just hit on the latest weight loss fad. Add the loss of calories to all the chasing around you have to do to keep them out of trouble and you’ve got the perfect slimming plan!

        3. Yes! Roll up and try the Beastie Diet… It’s low in fat, and full of fibre. Cook what you’d normally eat, order what you’d normally drink… And consume none of it! I can definitely see it catching on 😁

    1. Hahaha! That’s so funny, I thought of that too! Except I never figured out why. πŸ˜‚ Thanks for your lovely comment!

  4. Human Jon here – I am still blown away! JonBeastie has been waking me up with all the classic guitar riffs – Beastie on the Water, Stairway to Beastie, Beastie California, that kind of thing. And that look on their faces! You are truly the Da Vinci of Beasties! πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks, Human Jon! 😁 I’m glad your new monster friend is keeping your entertained with his musical antics! I saw he’s been jamming with a fellow musician since he moved in with you as well – are they thinking of forming a band? πŸ€”
